it's so silly when people say john taught sam and dean not to cry, just look at how often all of them are crying in season 1, including john. same with the affection, the first thing he does when reuniting with them is giving each of them a hug. obviously john is very masculine, even harsh, but he's decidedly not unemotional. i feel like the 'drill sergeant' behaviors some people ascribe to him go way too far and don't match his actual character.
