The Black Rabbits
The Celestial Puppeteers: an Aramán lore theory
I believe that we Bolaire scholars of the Halaire Enjoyers discord are onto something here, so I'm sharing the theory now so we can say we called it if we're right:
The play that killed the trickster goddess Rauwyn was not performed by halflings. It was performed by her own celestials. The masks of the panto were crafted to be able to bodysnatch celestials and make them perform the play against their will.
Most likely the halfling conspirators presented the masks to the celestials as gifts, and then the runes inside the masks did their work and took them over: Trojan masks. A grand trick the halflings pulled on the tricksters who ruled them.
There's quite a lot of evidence to support this theory. Includes spoilers through episode 17.
Why is there a coffin for a halfling celestial (Olbalad) with a creepy magic mask in it? Explanation: that's the mask that took over Olbalad for the play.
If the masks were worn by willing halfling actors, then why are they sentient and why can they body snatch people? If they were worn by halflings, they wouldn't need to be sentient or bodysnatching, just magical, like the staves of night or the Last Arrow. But if they were meant to be worn by Rauwyn's celestials, they would need to be sentient and bodysnatching.
There's several points where Bolaire appears to be able to detect celestial vibes specifically. Brennan describes him reacting viscerally to the coffin. When he sees the lights of the Palazzo Davinos go out in episode 4, Brennan says Bolaire gets very bad vibes from it. We now know from episode 17 that the ritual the Tachonis did with Occtis in there was to summon a celestial.
Brennan called the fatal play "opening and closing night of the greatest play Aramán has ever known but no mortal witnessed." That's because the audience was not mortal (Rauwyn) but also because the actors were not mortal (celestials).
In the scene where Murray and Bolaire study the coffin, when Brennan says "Olbalad", Taliesin looks down at his notebook and gets an "oh shit" expression on his face and quietly says "oh no". Why does he recognize that name? Because he knows which masks went with which celestials.
This theory also would explain why Lady Cormoray is onto Bolaire and clearly wants him for herself. As a mask capable of controlling a celestial, Bolaire would be an amazing check on the power of the Halovars for any rival House that's aware of what they have in the basement.
This theory also explains why Bolaire is so rough on mortal bodies, degrading them over time: he was designed to be worn by a celestial, not a mortal.
Shoutout to @miladydragon, @schemer-aishama, and tareacel for brainstorming this theory with me. It was so much fun.
In so many ways this is a much more mature campaign than the previous three seasons of critical role, and it’s encouraged both by the setting and Brennan’s adjustments to the rules.
Previous seasons were told in the style of sword and sorcery epics, where the fate of the world hung on our intrepid heroes, and they can save the world because they are Special. D&D lends itself to this type of story. The rule book even comments on how a typical commoner has a 10 in each stat and can’t survive a blow that even a level one character can shrug off.
Brennan’s world building and its subsequent rules adaptations render that type of story telling... not impossible, but it certainly wouldn’t ring true. These are not singular individuals who can fight hordes by themselves - they are skilled individuals who are as fragile and mortal as the rest of the world. They encounter situations where they are outmatched. They have to be tactical because there are other people and creatures as strong or stronger than them everywhere. Perhaps most importantly for the purposes of exploring the complexity and depth of the human experience - if they die they are dead (save for something with truly terrible consequences such as what happened to Occtis). There is no resurrection. There are no gods to save them. Mortals insured that, because the alternative was allowing unjust and cruel gods to decide their fates and that was worse than life without them.
All of this lends itself to a very different type of story than they’ve told before. It’s important to note that I don’t mean better here (though this is the type of story I personally prefer). It’s almost a different genre of story. But when you know for a fact that the gods are real and when you die you will be ferried to an afterlife that coincides with your beliefs and behaviors, the sting of death is significantly lessened. When you can call up the spirit of your dead husband and ask him questions, death just doesn’t hurt as much. When you can be resurrected with an hour long spell, the fear of fighting the horde doesn’t hold as much weight.
That opens so many doors with this setting. Fighting for your beliefs is scarier. Fighting against power is scarier. Starting a revolution against the unjust power grab being implemented by the ruling elite has teeth and stakes. They may not be successful. The last revolution wasn’t, and they’ve already lost so much and terribly. But I think it is the type of story that means a lot. Especially now.

F11 the full screen button? You’re scared of the full screen button? F10?? It opens the menu bar???
Computers are so scary what if I accidentally hit F12 in a steam game and it takes a screenshot. What if I press shift + F12 while in word and accidentally save my document 😖
If you had to learn what the F keys on your computer do through me reblogging this post, then I'm glad you did. Computer literacy is not a skill that gets taught anymore, and it is absolutely one that needs to be taught in order to be learned. Colder than a witch's tit in a brass bra.
My father would say that when the temperature dropped below freezing. I always wondered where it came from. Turns out it's a riff on an old nautical saying.
Colder than monkey balls in a brass ring.
On sailing ships, the cannon balls (called monkey balls almost definitely a racist reason for that) were stacked three on the bottom and one on top. They were held in place by a brass ring. In severe cold the ring would constrict causing the cannon balls to pop out and go rolling around the deck.
Anyway, it's that fucking cold out.
Stay warm my friends.
Welcome to critical role campaign four! We’ve got so many wonderful things such as:

Thank you, Brennan. I truly needed that, and I think other people may too.
Campaign 4 is full of beautiful sad men having the worst days of their lives and insane women who would murder these sad men and it wouldn’t be their first murders of the day. And I think that’s beautiful.
