Ectoplasm can distill into a designer drug that gives a feeling of disconnection and tranquility of death.

Danny is used as a live harvester of ectoplasm for said designer drug at the Iceberg Lounge

At best, it was humiliating. Every bodily fluid of his would forever carry a trace of ectoplasm. His body produced it, his organs filtered it, and even his sweat contained it. The humiliation of having to go to the bathroom in a bucket so some nameless lackey can rush it to some lab for extraction was unlike any he had known. It wasn't enough. Waste products only carried low grade ectoplasm. This was the cheap stuff, the crap they'd sell to the junkies that could barely scrape together the cash for their next high.

The human body releases various chemicals when under stress or in pain. Danny's also happened to be a concentrated dose of high grade ectoplasm. Endorphins are released under pleasant circumstances too, like taking a walk, eating spicy food, or having sex, but pain was perhaps the simplest way to do it consistently. When running a criminal empire, consistency is key, especially when it comes to supply.

Sometimes Danny wished he could still scream just so he could bring the building down on all of them, himself included.
