Part of what makes Makima interesting is Fujimoto never lets us in her head. We don’t truly know which of her actions are pure cruelty, a warped love for humanity, or a genuine belief control is the only way to create a better world.

I mean scenes like this are fascinating since it’s hard to know exactly what’s going through her mind.

I love that he also places just enough hints so that when you look back, you can tell how and why she acts like this. For example, in the movie scene, she cries because she craves just that, to be held by someone that truly loves her as an equal, not by someone who she can control or force into loving her for her own wishes and manipulation. It's small details that show, despite being a cruel villain, Makima does also have emotions, needs and wants. She's one of the best written characters in today's manga and anime
