Children's summer reading programs aren't just challenges, but celebration of literacy, summer holidays, and of libraries themselves.
Come June, many public libraries in the U.S., UK, and Canada offer summer reading challenges to keep kids reading after school lets out. As a children’s librarian, summer is easily the best time of year in our job because enthusiastic kiddos fill the library, super jazzed to complete the challenge and receive a medal. Who doesn’t like a fun test of their abilities? Plus, school is out, so kids are happier and around way more often, giving the library space an extra buzz.
When I ran the Summer Reading Club for Devon Public Library, I thought long and hard about how to design the rules, and I ended up coming to the following conclusion:
It's best to make it so that the kids are keeping track of reading hours rather than books read, as this way it evens the playing field for everyone. If you use books read, kids who read longer books will either have a disadvantage or will only read short books and not challenge themselves.
I think it's part of why my program was so successful. It went from the usual 5-15 kids to over 80 kids actively participating (my supervisor even raised my budget to account for the unprecedented amount of participation!).
Some of the other rules included that for every X number of hours read (I don't recall the exact amount) meant they'd get a "ticket" put into the draw for the grand prizes at the end of the summer, so the more you read, the better your chances of winning. And each activity you participated in from the summer programming also counted for a "ticket".
You also were guaranteed to get to pick a little prize for every X hours read, so even if you didn't win one of the grand prizes, you weren't left empty-handed and feeling like you put in all the work for nothing.
I made it so that the grand prizes were slightly cheaper than they had been in the past (mine were around $30 each) so that we could have more grand prizes (I had 4). Part of the reason for having more grand prizes was that, this way, I could better cater to different interests.
My 4 grand prizes were:
A marble run set
A scratch art kit
A 3D printing pen
A copy of Dragonology by Dugald A. Steer (a book about dragons that has tons of little fiddly bits)

This is really funny on dark mode
On dark mode this is like a clown trying to hide behind a light pole.
I hope you believe that you can still make a beautiful life for yourself even if you lost many years of it to grief, or darkness, depression, or a wound that wouldn't close.
