Also, do not walk close to walls. It will be easier for someone so walk past you and push you against it or corner you.

If your gut is telling you to cross the street or change your path, do it. Don’t risk it. Your body knows.

If you can, buy a large umbrella and walk holding it. Studies say that predators are less likely to attempt an attack on someone that could fight back. Keys around your knuckles is fine but you’ll need to get very close to do damage. Umbrellas are more precise.

Avoid wearing headphones if you are alone on an empty street. Look aware.

Entering an uber alone? Call your father (or anyone you trust) and say “hey dad! Yep, I’m almost there, I’m sending you the route.” outloud. Then proceed to send them the route so they can follow the uber drive. This will most likely intimidate the predator.

If you see someone in an uncomfortable or possibly dangerous situation, walk up to them and say “Betty, oh my god, I haven’t seen you in so long!”. If she gets slightly confused, you can whisper and let her know you’re trying to help and that she should follow along. Walk together to another station or away from where you are. The man will most likely not follow. I have done this one 2 times and can be very helpful.

If you are unsure she needs help, you can pass her a note saying something like “hey, I noticed this man beside you is making you uncomfortable. If you’d like help, fake a sneeze right now and I will come up to you and pretend we are friends.” This is a long note, but its an example. Be discrete. If she follows along, proceed with the previous tip. This is helpful when you’re in a crowded train and you notice harassment.

Just saw a video explaining why putting a key between each finger is more likely to hurt you than them (the keys will just get pushed back into your knuckles). A better way to hold them is to get your longest key and just clench your hand around it, like you’re making a fist. So, the other day, when I was discussing AO3's policy on solicitation, a tumblr user came at me saying that AO3's "no monetization/solicitation" rules were "bullshit" because nexus mods allows fan created mods to get paid.

It protects your works from copyright strikes and DCMA takedowns.

It protects your work from advertisers.

It protects your work from overzealous legal challenges.

It protects your right to post adult content.

AO3 is non-profit and AO3 will never try to use you or your work to make a profit for themselves and AO3 will go to bat for you if someone tries to legally challenge you or your works.

Please respect AO3 and its mission.

AO3 is a noncommercial fandom space. These used to be more common. They were never the majority - free website hosting used to (mostly still does) require ads of some sort, and most fanfic archives were free website things.

However, some were self-hosted, and some of those didn't have ads. (Because why the fuck would you have ads on your Favorite 80s Cop Show Archive? Ads would just be drawing the wrong kind of attention. You had a link for people to donate to help cover the server costs, but mostly the owner covered them alone.)

Noncommercial spaces are much rarer than they used to be. Noncommercial creative spaces are almost unknown now.

There are a lot of reasons AO3 is noncommercial. Copyright protection is part of it - since financial consideration is one of the factors used to decide if something is infringing, "this makes no money" helps claim it is not infringing. (It's not a guarantee. If you make 50000 copies of a hot new movie and give them away for free, claiming "but I didn't make money" will not protect you in court.) However, this is irrelevant for some fandoms. (Shakespeare fanfic does not have any copyright issuse.)

Part of the reason is so people can practice and share their art without trying to make it profitable. It changes how you write, how you draw, when you are trying to get other people to pay you for it. And there's nothing wrong with that - but there's a whole internet full of places for you to sell your creative work. This one is for sharing without monetary concerns.

And one really big issue that all the 'but I just wanna put up my patreon link!!!' people miss: They only want to advertise their patreon/kofi/etsy/Amazon books/etc on AO3 because nobody else is doing it.

Why not advertise on Twitter/X? On Tumblr? On Instagram? Bluesky, Facebook, Threads, Discord, and so on?

Because in all those spaces, you're one voice among thousands yelling "LOOK AT ME! BUY MY STUFF!!!"

They don't want advertising to be allowed at AO3. They want to be the *only* person advertising at AO3. Or at least the only one in their fandom. They don't want every other fic to be "half a chapter of text, followed by a three-paragraph Where To Buy My Stuff insert, followed by the rest of the chapter."

But none of those are the True Core Issue.

The True Core Issue is: Commercial links/mentions on AO3 are against the rules.

If you don't like the rules, you don't have to post at AO3.

Some people who volunteer for the OTW will occasionally try to explain why that rule was made. But that part doesn't matter. If you believe the rule is stupid, or their legal analysis is flawed, or the community dynamic wouldn't drastically change if people started advertising -

You're still not allowed to advertise on AO3.

You may want to know why, and some of us will try to explain.

But this is not a "gotcha" situation where, if you believe you have succeeded in explaining that all our "why" are irrelevant, you get to ignore the rule.

This is not a gov't setting where you can break the rule and then appeal to a higher court if you didn't like the judgment. There is no higher court. If you break the rule repeatedly, you'll be banned and your fic will be removed.

You don't need to understand or agree with the "why" in order to follow the rule.

Will likes running. Always has. He used to race the other kids before they all realized it was pointless. Will ran as if he was run by a windmill. Every step only seemed to energize him. Nowadays, he doesn't race. he just runs. Through the forest as the sun rises. Dodging low hanging branches. Jumping over protruding roots. He's positive the people around think he's crazy with how hard he's laughing. That is if people were awake this early.

At the 30-minute mark on his run, he reaches a clearing. He sits on a rock and unhooks his water bottle from the carabiner on his shorts. Sipping from the water, he leans back and watches the sun rise.

"Hello, sun! It's me, your son!"

His laughing at his own terrible pun is interrupted by a weak bump on his leg. Far too low to be human. He rolls up into a sitting position to see what it was. To his shock and slight dismay, he sees a Mama rabbit. White fur tangled with blood.

The rabbit seems to be trying to get his attention. When Will gets up to check on the rabbit, it starts weakly hopping away. Will follows it. It's only a few feet, but when he sees where the rabbits lead him, his stomach drops. It's a little burrow bits of blood covered fur. It's a brutal scene, and in the middle of it all, a baby bunny. The mama rabbit gently picks the baby up and brings it to Will.

Will kneels down to check over the rabbits. The mama rabbit is in terrible condition, Will realises. She seems to have used the last of her energy to save her baby. Will is against just letting anything die, not without at least trying. But any healing hyme would use energy the rabbit doesn't have. Will is resigned to use his second most important medical skill, bedside manner.

He sits with the dying rabbit in his lap. Petting the rabbit's matted fur, hoping to provide some comfort in its last moments. he sits and hums, not a hyme, just a song. It's a simple song, one his mom used to sing. Not a Naomi original, just an old song that her mom used to sing and her mom's mom and her mom before. A generational song that is nothing but comfort for all parties. eventually, the mama rabbit breathing stops. Will buries her. A small funeral containing all the rights he's seen Nico preform.

After the funeral, he scoops up the baby bunny and makes his way back to camp. He walks slowly so as to not startled the poor baby. He goes straight to Cecil to ask him if he has a cage. Strangly, he does. Will chooses not to question it. He heads back to his cabin and searches for things to spruce up the cage. He decides that his next medical run can double as getting bunny raising supplies. He puts the bunny in the cage to let it familiarize it's self with the new environment.

"Welp, time to tell Nico he's got another kid"

He can't very well abandon the poor thing. Plus, the mama rabbit asked him to take care of it, and you can't ignore a dying wish.

AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.

AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:

Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.

AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.

AO3 was specifically made for the stuff likely to be purged from other sites.

It was built around "we need to own the servers" so we wouldn't have to deal with anyone else's judgment calls about what was acceptable in fanfic: Not corporate sponsors, not evangelical religious groups, not "save the children" activists... and not other fans who think that The Gross Stuff should be banned from public view, only shared via private email after you've sent in a request heavily laden with special keywords.

Some of the founders remembered when slash fanfic was kept under the table at the dealer's room, distributed with brown paper wrappers only to people who knew to ask for it specifically.

And they said: Fuck that. Our art is not a crime and we're not going to be ashamed of it. If you are ashamed to have your art next to it - there's a whole wide internet that's ready to host your G-rated genfic.

AO3 was built for the stuff that was unwelcome elsewhere.

Instance of power 1: Will and The Ooky Spooky death sense.

At first, Will doesn't notice. He's always been good at managing the infirmary. Knowing which patients needed immediate attention and which could wait. That's until a patient came in clearly on the brink. They'd just come back from quest and didn't have any obvious injuries. Will was driving himself mad running tests. He rereads every medical text. He tried every method of healing. He sings hyme after hyme. Nothing works.

That afternoon, when Nico comes in, Will has him look at him because it's only getting worse. Nico looks at the patient and immediately frowns. Will's panic immediately quadruples, but he tries to hide it because "He's a professional unprofessional child field medic." Nico walks over to the bed and talks to the kid. They seem to be agreeing on something. Will doesn't fully understand, but when nico comes back, he tells Will that the kid should be OK and they just need to spend time with others. Will isn't 100% sure, but he can't continue to hold them here without a definite reason. And tragically, a vibe of "if I look away from you, there won't be a you when I look back" isn't a valid reason. So he gets the release papers ready and sends the kid to his cabin with strict instructions of rest and to come back the next day to check over some minor injuries.

The next day, the kid never shows. Will asks their cabin mates, but they all haven't seen them. By lunch, the entire camp knows they're missing, but demigods leave came all the time. They assume they left. That's until they find them, deep in the woods.

The events after are a blur of intense emotions, but by the end, all the campers surround the fire, watching as the shroud burns. Will glances over to Nico; he looks sad but not surprised. When he asks Nico what was up, Nico tells him about what happened. According to Nico, during the quest, the kid's "friend" died to a monster. When Nico was talking to them in the infirmary, he was trying to convince them their "friend" wouldn't want this. He thought he had gotten through to them, but clearly not. He's tells Will he's shocked he noticed the death aura. Will doesn't process the last few words until next week.
