If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.
Still questioning things but I’m thinking I want to change my pronouns to he/void. Still working on the gender as a whole question but out of all the other pronouns I’ve looked at possibly trying void was the only one that felt right.
That being said I have come to the conclusion that alterhuman does fit me. This was honestly the easiest thing to figure out. Well, actually I’m not sure on the flavouring yet but at least I’ve figured out one thing.
Disappeared for a bit and in that time I’ve been introduced to the pronouns thon/thons/thonself. I’m not 100% on if I’ll use them alongside he/him/himself but I’m definitely questioning it. I’m leaning more towards them than they. The history surrounding the word thon is definitely a contributor to that.
I’ve been questioning whether simply male is correct for me for a while now but to be completely honest while watching season 3 of Hannibal my brain was like yeah that’s not completely correct- I’m not finished with it yet. And this isn’t the first time this has happened while watching Hannibal season two also got me.
Not sure on what flavour of gender but Xenogender, Cassgender, and Agender are currently what I’m looking more into.
Also, not related to gender at all, but in my search, I also found out about alterhuman, which is now something else I’m looking into. It’s been interesting doing this dive and finding out that many other non-neurotypicals feel the same way.
I’m nearly done with reading Project Hail Mary and it’s so good. I’m 100% going to be obsessing over this book for a while. I can’t believe I put off reading this for so long. I’ve had a physically copy for 4 years and the audiobook for 2. I literally had no excuse and now I’m annoyed with myself. I’m excited to watch the movie although that likely won’t happen until it releases physically.
I have a hunch that I’ll probably do a re-read before I can get my hands on the movie. There’s also a very high chance I’ll be writing fanfics for this and at the very least I’ll be reading them.
Final note I now want to buy the movie tie-in paperback and the new deluxe edition hardcover that comes out soon. I have a Book of the Month copy already and usually don’t like having duplicates but this book is going to be one of the few exceptions. Although, I might get rid of my current copy after I get the other hardcover.
don't get me wrong I love unhinged feral disaster characters but may I submit: the calm, collected, master of resting nothing-fazes-me bitchface character gradually being pushed to their breaking point, slowly and agonizingly becoming more deranged as the foundation they've built their worldview, their entire identity, upon crumbles to pieces beneath them, until all that's left is blood and ash and the beast that's lied dormant within the darkest depths of their soul finally, gleefully awakens to unleash absolute fucking hell, mmm yeah that's the good stuff
Haven’t been on here in a while but a few months ago I did a 5 star audit- which is honestly just looking at all your favourite books (even if their not 5 stars) and seeing what they have in common. I also made a list of ones that I could see being a part of it in the future but weren’t represented enough to count them. And I was wondering if anybody had any book recs for me based on them. It can fit one or multiple of these as long as you personally think it’s an amazing book and want others to read it.
Audits: grief, death (in anyway), a character does research, bodyguard romance, royalty, music, queer
Possibles: dystopian, apocalypse/ post apocalypse, paranormal, friends to lovers, rivals to lovers, enemies to lovers, fated mates, forced proximity, vampires, werewolves, zombies, fungus, sea folk, robots, water setting, medieval setting

It’s nearly my birthday and well with the world how it is I’m not feeling very celebratory. That and the fact that I still don’t have a job… job searching in a small town is really not it.
I keep putting off things for when I get a job and it’s really starting to affect me. But, I mean I have been looking for a job for 2 almost 3 years so it makes sense that it is.
I just wish I could land a job so that I could start ticking off boxes.
I’m planning to get back to learning French this year and I would like to start watching some French booktuber’s and writers. So, here I am looking for some recommendations.
Main genres I’m interested in: fantasy, sci-fi, and horror but I’m open to all genres.
I’m once again putting off reorganising my bookshelves. So, here’s my thrift haul from today which unexpectedly ended up being gifted. And some late second hand manga Christmas presents.
