Not to rant again but something that really grates my nerves is the whole entire "Xander and Willow ripping Buffy out of heaven" argument that is so persistent.

Not only does it conveniently leave out Anya and Tara, two who were completely involved and complicit in bringing her back. It fails to acknowledge (most of the time) a lot of the nuance within the argument and just chalks it down to "Buffy's friends bad, Buffy right".

Yes. Buffy was in heaven. She was "at peace". But none of them have any way of knowing that. And the afterlife in the universe is so ambiguous they had no reason to believe that heaven even existed in the first place. Not like it had ever been said.

Buffy is valid for feeling the way she did it about it. But the fandom treats it like they did it with some malicious intent. Like they hated the idea of Buffy being in heaven, or "Willow only did it to prove she could" when that never was the case. Yes, Willows behavior could be seen as codependent, but why are we encouraging Buffy's suicidal mindset. Why are we encouraging the idea that the only way someone with a troubled life can be happy is if they kts?? Willow did it because of she couldn't that meant she lost her best friend forever, and there was no way she would ever see her again. I love how everyone fails to consider anyone else's feelings in this situation.

also, you can't say "Buffy deserved to stay in heaven" and then also say "S5 was the worst ending for her character." that's not how it works. Buffy either stays dead or she doesn't. Pick a side and stick with it.

You cannot tell me Fred and Wesley are "made for each other" when their relationship is built off of disloyalty and deceit

I am firm in my belief that they would not have gotten together without the mindwipe. And the fact that Fred was interested in three different men before she ever even considered the idea that Wesley could be on radar does not scream "made for each other" to me.

The mindwipe plot hole is an issue for me on it's own. But, to me, if they were fully capable of remembering the train wreck that was their relationship in s4 I doubt they would have been good together. (They never will be but yk..)

We want Flawed Female Characters! No, not THOSE flaws. 😕 Those aren't sexy, COOL flaws. You know, the ones that I don't think actually SHOULD be considered flaws, that I might even feel personally judged for. The "unjustly martyred by the court of public opinion" kind of flaws. So like a "flawed" woman who's actually kind of a Saint in a way. I didn't want, like, FLAW flaws. What she did was WRONG and that makes her a BAD PERSON, and how can you justify that? If you still like her after what she did, that makes YOU a Bad Person too. Ugh, disgusting. 😕 But anyway, WHY isn't anyone writing flawed female characters?

but what i WILL give ats is wesley recognizing that the fred that he was with for those few short days was NOT his fred, just like nobody else in the fang gang was really themselves (except angel). bc if the mindrape had never had happened, i think gunn and fred would have inevitably found their way back to each other, and wesley would have resumed his deeply homoplatonic attachment to angel. not bc i think joss is a genius, but bc i think joss realized that he wrote himself into a hole by dangling fresley in front of the audience like a carrot, and then making the dynamic so weird and creepy and toxic until the plot had essentially moved ON from any chance of fresley happening naturally, to fresley happening bc everyone got mindraped.

bc no one can deny that fred DID feel a certain kind of way about wesley, and trusted him with things she couldn’t with others, but was that really enough to say that fred loved that man the way he loved her? that he was her One True Love? why, bc her crush on angel was juvenile? or that her relationship with gunn was just a pitstop along the way to Fresley Central?

except she DID love gunn. she DID lose her shit when he died. she DID have internal conflict seeing him kill on her behalf. she DID have unresolved feelings about him beating up a kid so they wouldn’t be eaten by jasmine, and at the same time, the hatred in her eyes for gwen, her grief when she realized gunn was gonna die for her when he went to trade his soul in, that shit was REAL. that wasn’t just one-sided manpain. that was shared grief and love between gunn and fred, because fred/gunn was about BOTH fred and gunn, and i think joss hated that he had all that to contend with when all fresley had was a fraught kiss and wesley’s obsession.

and he wrote it too! he literally sabotaged fresley, and for what? to make wesley’s manpain even greater? bc that’s what it did, and that’s ALL it did.

What enrages me the most out of anything is how the show tried to gaslight the audience into thinking Fresley was the healthiest more sensible option as compared to Frunn and Weslah. But if you actually take off the rose colored glasses for a moment they’re really evenly matched.. if not worse.

Wesley was completely obsessive and emotionally attached to Fred in an unhealthy way that so many people romanticize. Does it not concern anybody that he was willing to KILL his own father for Fred? Willing to keep the person who hollowed her out around simply just because she resembled Fred? Or maybe the fact that he completely homewrecked Fred and Gunns relationship and barley felt a shred of guilt for it.

The only reason Wesley was as willing to help Fred murder her abusive professor was because he wanted Fred to depend on him as much as he depended on her. He wanted Fred to see him as the better option. To come to him whenever Gunn didn’t tell her what she wanted to hear. Had it been anyone else, he probably would have turned them away. When Gunn comes to Wesley for help when those dehydrating bugs were infesting the hotel, he gave him the cold shoulder until he mentioned Fred was in trouble.

The only reason Fred didn’t pull away from Wesley’s advances in s4 was because she was pissed at her boyfriend. Wesley was giving her attention, and she saw an opportunity for something fresh and new. The moment Wesley stops giving her that attention (to grieve Lilah) she doubles back and tries to patch her relationship with Gunn again. It had nothing to do with actually being interested with Wesley.

Sure, realistically they seem the most compatible for each other considering their both “nerdy” but honestly that’s the ONLY truly positive thing about them to me, and falls almost completely flat when you realize Wesley wasn’t even on Fred’s radar until he lost all of his dorky charm. But I’ve already yapped long enough…
