I also really do need to stress that partying with an extremist fbi director and getting calls from the president and having a player speak at the state of the union is indeed, really fucking weird and unusual, even for hockey . Like for as much as the culture is very bigoted and white supremacist and conservative and as much as sports is political, this is still a very very strange situation and I don’t want to like sanewash it I guess (I don’t really love that term but I’m blanking on anything else.) I say this as someone who’s been really involved with hockey as long as I can really remember and also follows just a lot of sports and sports news, I can’t think of anything like this. It’s not really unexpected given the people involved, but it’s still very strange

I fear it's an accumulation of many things, like the country getting more extremist, the players having bigger platforms with social media so they speak more of their bigotry and that influence is recognized as useful by the government, the fact that last time they won Gold the president was a relative moderate (if Reagan had been president when they beat the USSR it might've been different), the fact that the government has a beef with Canada specifically so this is a perfect opportunity to politically reappropriate the victory, and even more importantly, as you said, hockey being overwhelmingly white conservative upper class and all that means they are perfect for representing the right wing ideal, good ole red blooded Americans. Because he can't use major successes in basketball or track and field for that purpose because they are mostly represented by Black athletes, women's football and hockey, has, well, too many women and gays, and other sports like American football (also very Black anyway) or baseball (fairly conservative but also more diverse than hockey) aren't cared enough about in the rest of the world except for a few countries to matter internationally.

Plus trump and his government also desperately want to look cool and successful and being associated with international victory is an essential part of sports used as propaganda obviously, and the hockey team accepting it with open arms just makes the job all that much easier

Every part of the process to get here has been step by step normalizations of some truly borderline dictatorial behavior. Like countries using sports as propaganda is of course not unheard of (Bolsonaro did it with the Brazil NT, Macron did it in 2018 with France, etc etc) but everything aligning in their favor to this point is just horrid new levels in contemporary history like this is practically Berlin 1936 Olympics levels of political réappropriation of sports (on a single team and not the entire delegation, sure, but still)
