Seriously though, do most Americans not know that the reason you can mock the shit out of public officials without getting charged for libel is Hustler Magazine? No really. In 1983, Hustler Magazine ran a fake ad that Jerry Falwell (yes, that Jerry Falwell) went to bone-town with his own mother in a dirty outhouse. This was in response to Falwell's Moral Majority, a puritanical organization that tried to put prayer in public schools, ban abortion, ban homosexual acts, ban any 'anti-family' news outlet or magazine, and convert Jews to Christianity. For obvious reasons, Jerry Falwell's Moral Panic PAC (not the actual name it was definitely called the Moral Majority and NEVER represented the majority of Americans) represented a threat to Hustler and its ilk. The ad itself was a parody of a Campari ad that was running at the time, asking people to describe their 'first time'. The original would be a bit risqué and end with people revealing they were talking about Campari, an alcoholic drink, not sex.
In the ad, there is a fake interview wherein Jerry Falwell supposedly confesses to banging his mom in a fly-ridden outhouse while drunk on a Campari based cocktail called a "Fire and Brimstone" after chasing a goat out of the outhouse. The ad concludes with fake Jerry Falwell saying he's always drunk when he preaches and he calls his teachings bullshit. At the very bottom of the ad, in very fine print (too fine to be legible on the image I found of the ad) it tells the reader that this is a parody and should not be taken seriously. Well, Falwell was pissed and took Hustler (and its editor Larry Flynt) to court for libel. From 1986-1988, different courts said yes it was libel or no it wasn't libel until, in 1988, the case made it to the Supreme Court. In an 8-0 ruling, the Supreme Court said 'Yeah, being accused of incest in a parody ad probably hurt Falwell's feelings, but the First Amendment protects free speech that is critical of public officials and public figures.' Without Hustler Magazine writing a distasteful porn parody about a homophobic, anti-woman, anti-semitic man who wanted forced government-sanctioned Christianity to be the state religion of the United States, your free speech wouldn't be protected. Pornographers aren't 'the devil' but our friend John Waters up there is correct. Pornographers protect our rights. Whether you agree with porn or not, if you live in the United States, you ought to thank a pornographer for your free speech and the best way to thank a pornographer is by rallying behind pornographers' rights to exist and distribute porn. So next time someone on any platform comes for the pornographers, remember that you owe the pornographers for your right to mock politicians and other public figures. Thank pornographers and back them up.

alternate scenario where the rebels continue to think the whole thing is a wacky coincidence and that Darth Vader has mistaken Luke for his actual long-lost son
decide this is too good an opportunity to pass up, send Luke in as an undercover agent
Luke ''''pretending'''' to be Darth Vader's son and faking going along w Vader's attempts to turn him to the dark side like yeah i love anger & hate let's do this. can you show me how you do that move where you throw people in the air with your brain.
he is secretly feeding information back to the rebellion all the time constantly
a number of Vader's underlings are pretty sure Luke is a rebel spy but everyone is too afraid of Vader to argue with him on it
Vader meanwhile is desperately trying to train Luke while keeping Palpatine from finding out his son is still alive. Luke wanders in while he's mid imperial conference call and gets tackled to the ground.
after a couple of months Vader decides Luke has had enough training for the 'we should kill the emperor and rule the galaxy together' speech
Luke (who has in a weird way kind of got to like Vader at this point) radioing the rebellion like guys call me crazy but i think we might be able to get this guy on side
Luke: okay dad hear me out. I reach out to the rebellion and tell them I've changed my mind and I wanna start working with them again. we enlist their help to take down the emperor. what do you think?
Vader: and then we rule the galaxy together as father and son?
Luke: sure
Vader: very duplicitous. i like it. once the emperor is dead we will of course crush the rebellion so we can reign unopposed.
Luke: well we can talk about that closer to the time
suspicious imperial officers swiping a sample of Luke's DNA like okay let's see who Vader's ''''''long lost son''''' really is
and then looking at the results like well. shit.
Luke is low-levelling panicking the whole time in case Darth Vader's real lost son shows up
important to note:
as far as Luke is concerned, he's in a very serious drama where he has to pretend to be the son of the man who murdered his father. he's fully planning to kill Vader. hates being around him.
however due to a combo of getting to experience Vader in full 'trying to be a good father to my long-lost son' mode, their latent father-son force bond, and his forgiving nature, he finds himself starting to sympathise w Vader (and also genuinely appreciate him as a teacher). which is horrifying bcos again!! that's the monster who killed his father!! and who needs to die!! he's experiencing emotional turmoil over this like you wouldn't believe
as far as Vader is concerned he's in a very serious drama where he has just learned that the child he believed died with Padme is still alive and now he's training him while trying to keep him a secret from the emperor (who will very likely killy him on sight)
and he's terrified for Luke's safety and on one level he wants to train him to be a good sith apprentice but on another level he doesn't want Luke to end up like him?? but he's sure turning to the dark side is the only way Luke's ever gonna be able to be safe from Palpatine so he has to go through with it in spite of any conflicting feelings
in actuality both of them are in a ridiculous sci-fi comedy of errors
Palpatine is watching this through a pair of opera glasses like 'i'm just gonna see how this one plays out'
The rebel spies picking up on imperial transmissions and going "hey luke! Good news! You're absolutely not going to be found out as a fake!" And hes like "oh? That's a relief. Why not? Did something happen?" and they're like "so, luke, bad news,"

Here's a nice story I learned in the Norwegian ski museum:
In 1895, polar explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen were having a bad time. Their expedition had faced some hardships and they were forced to stay on Franz Josef Land in a little hut they built out of mud and stones. In their hut, they slept for circa 20 hours a day, and spent the remaining four hours watching the northern lights or reminiscing about the comforts of home and the books they had read.
After several months of this, and nine months of sleeping in the same sleeping bag to stay warm, on New Year's Eve, Nansen finally gathered his courage and asked Johansen if they should start adressing each other with the informal you.
This is where the story ended in the museum, so unfortunately, I can't tell you whether Johansen answered yes or no.

Not socialist in a “I won’t have to work” type of way but socialist in a “I’ll still be working but I won’t be worried I won’t make the rent” type of way. In a “billions won’t be hoarded by one person” type of way. In a “janitors, fast-food workers, child care workers, preschool teachers, hotel clerks, personal care and home health aides, and grocery store cashiers, will live comfortably” type of way. In a “the sick and elderly will be cared for” type of way. In a “no child should work” type of way.
In the "my illness won't condemn me to an early, ignominious death" kind of way.
Everyone reblog this. Mandatory.
There's wholesome ships and there's toxic ships, but I'd like to coin 'sodium chloride ships', where the individuals involved are both horrible and dangerous people, but somehow being together renders them surprisingly well-adjusted (if a little salty).
The opposite of this is a 'coke and mentos' dynamic, where the two people are generally chill and likeable but being around each other makes them both wild and chaotic.
Here's the breakdown:
god the roman empire is so funny. imagine if the secret service had killed 13 presidents and the current president just had to be like, okay with that fact
They killed the last 13 presidents and the current guy had to like, buy them new toys.
i’ve started babysitting for a VERY christian family which is great because they pay me a lot of money but as someone who was raised almost completely agnostic it’s kind of insane. the 2 year old keeps asking me to read her stories from the bible. (why are we reading david and goliath to a 2 year old????) the 5 year old told me today that he was going to bring his legos to heaven with him. he also has repeatedly told me that the lego spaceships he builds are stronger than jesus. (not sure what to say to that. do i deny it??? are things allowed to be stronger than jesus??) had to stop myself mid sentence today because i almost told them im not going to heaven which would DEFINITELY have caused several meltdowns. they’re also both completely fascinated by my nose ring
with every note on this post i understand christianity slightly less
important addition in the tags I think!
Very important addition in the tags.
Also, as a lego nerd and an agnostic who’s done a pinch of research I’m pretty sure a lego spaceship stronger than jesus is heresy, but I’ll ask an expert @heresylog
It’s heresy but the child can have a little heresy. As a treat.
