A funny thing happens if you look at Sweden's homicides. They use more explosives. Because of the crime gang element.

I was talking to an Australian the other day, who said they would never visit the US because "it's too dangerous". While I tried to explain that it wasn't as bad they thought and so on, they jumped to how we are selfish for not banning guns to prevent school shootings, and how that's something they never have to worry about down there.

Somehow they completely forgot that Australia just had a mass shooting not that long ago. Despite guns being banned. The year before that, they had a mass stabbing attack that killed almost as many people as the shooting. Despite knives being banned. That one was eventually stopped by a police officer, with her gun. She shot at the attacker as he charged at her, iirc. And these were just two incidents I knew off the top of my head.

They never replied to me after I brought them up.

They never do. They just cite the, "St. Patrick charmed the snakes out of Ireland!" route, where they talk about how all those anti-gun ownership laws "Prevented so many shootings! You can tell because we don't have them!"

Yeah, just like how your laws against narcotics prevent so many drug addictions. Genius.

What's ironic is that loads of uninformed people love to claim Australia TOTALLY stopped mass shootings w/ the 1996 laws, which isn't even remotely true. Also, Australia has more guns now than they did back then!

Look y'all, this reveal means so much to me. So many times in movies these days there are big reveals for the audience’s benefit that mean absolutely nothing in the context of the story or to the characters in it. I’m talking the Thanos cameo in the Avengers’ stinger, I’m talking Benedict CumberKhan in Star Trek, I’m talking about every hackneyed “This character is actually this other character” when in universe nobody knows nor cares about their true identity.

But here? This reveal? This is a Big Reveal for us, Peter B Parker, and Miles, all on different levels. We and Peter both know Doc Ock is a portly dude, not a woman. We know the name Octavius… Otto Octavius. But when she says her name is Olivia Octavius we’re clued in to the fact that Doctor Octopus is a woman in this universe. And she has Peter captive.

Miles, if he was paying attention in science class earlier in the movie, would have known her name was Olivia Octavius, but that doesn’t mean anything to him, why would it? Liv has apparently been very good about keeping her supervillainy a secret. She’s in educational videos shown in high-schools. So to Miles, the reveal here is this scientist lady, who he knew enough about to know was the head scientist at Alchemax, is a supervillain. He gets the reveal a second or two after Peter.

And the movie? It was dropping hints the entire time, confident in our expectations blinding is to the truth. Olivia’s name was partially visible when Miles got to science class. Her glasses are octagonal. The lights in her lab are octagonal. We know she’s working with the Kingpin. Why wouldn’t she be a supervillain? Because she’s hot? Hell, Peter even says he needs to reexamine his internal biases. Maybe he was telling us that we should too.

It’s a reveal for us, and for our heroes. It means something, both in-universe and out. And that makes it infinitely better than other similar reveals.

Maybe this opinion makes me sound like a bit of a cynical asshole but I sincerely feel like there is a lot of written fiction out there (novels, short stories, fanfics, what have you) that does not exist as written fiction because the author had any particular love, appreciation, or interest for the medium but because writing is the medium that offers the least barriers of entry for a lone artist with no budget.

Like idk this isn't inherently bad but sometimes you can tell when someone *really* wanted this to be a movie or an animated show or w/e and decided to "settle" for the written word instead.

I've noticed all search engines lately just pick random words from your search instead of the whole context, so when I search "whole 30 rice cooker recipes," I get...rice recipes. So I add "grain free" to my search, and I get....quinoa recipes. Rice pudding recipes.

So if you play Skyrim and encounter Acadia, the herbalist in Whiterun, she’ll give you this dialogue that I highlighted. 

And I know Ataxia is a thing in game, but like,this is one of her default dialogue. She says it regardless if you have in game Ataxia or not. So, I did a quick google and
