A snippet for my Voltron/Percy Jackson Au
Keith sat down, his mouth feeling dry as the goddess conjured up steaming mugs of tea.
Hunk stared at her with his mouth open, while Allura and Pidge sat uncomfortably before her, as if they were facing a predator.
It was the same feeling Keith felt. The worst part was that the goddess had Lance's face.
"You saidā¦Lance is the son of Zeus," Keith said, trying not to stare at her, but it was difficult, it was as if his gaze was drawn to her like a magnet, "And that's why he was kidnapped."
"Yeah, that's so annoying. Just when there was progress!"
"Progress?"
Aphrodite ignored him. "Hera's been working on her plan for years. She hid him so well, even though she was absolutely furious about his very existence. So well, even I didn't know about him!"
"Wait, if his dad really is the big shot, why doesn't Lance have powers or anything?" Pidge asked, asking a very clever question. Too bad Aphrodite ignored her, and continued, "Zeus only claimed him after he went into space! Oh, the smug look on his face. So happy that his son was the hero of the new Great Prophecy. Poseidon let him gloat, after all, Percy was the hero of two Great Prophecies. Hades, on the other handā¦oh, he would have sent the Furies if he could. Breaking the oath once again! Oh well, we're talking about Zeus. Of course, he'd do it again."
"What oath?" Pidge asked.
Aphrodite ignored her again, "Fact is, Zeus claimed him, but oh dear Lance has no idea! So much trouble just because of his fatherā¦"
"What does his father have to do with it?!" Pidge almost screamed.
Aphrodite waved vaguely, "I'm getting there. Don't interrupt me, it's rude."
"It's even ruder not to answer when asked a question!"
The goddess glared at herāa look the real Lance would never haveāand said, her sugary voice hiding venom, "You know, you shouldn't antagonise me, dear Katie. Especially since you already have Hera, who hates you with a passion. Ah, she would have killed you already if she could. Years of planning, and then you ruin it all." Pidge blanched, "Howā¦"
"You had him captured, Katie. Lance is in danger because of you. Before he fulfilled his role! At least, the role Hera would have wanted for him," she glanced at Keith and smiled. "To be fair, you're not the only one who's put a spoke in Hera's plans. Keith here is also on the Queen of the Gods' hit list."
"What would I have done?" he asked, dreading the answer.
Aphrodite chuckled, "What have you done? You exist, dear boy. That's what you did. Hera planned the perfect story: the alien princess and the Earth demigod. That's how it was supposed to go. Even without my help, she'd done enough to make Lance fall head over heels for Princess Allura. But she never planned on you. How wonderful! Do you know how many people can say they stood in Hera's way?"
"I don't know what you're talking aboutā¦"
"Well, let's be clear: you were supposed to be his rival. The one he was supposed to kill."
"Lance would never have done that!" Pidge protested, and Aphrodite rolled her eyes, "You're not very knowledgeable about this, Katie. Children of Zeus are competitive, always. Especially among themselves. And Keith was the perfect rival, the one Lance was supposed to kill. At least, according to Hera's plan. But Lance didn't. He did something extraordinary: he rebelled against his father's nature."
"Lance isn't a killer. He's good," Keith found himself defending him, unable to bear the thought of Lance being judged because of a parent he'd never known and who'd never cared about him.
Aphrodite's smile widened, if that were possible. Keith couldn't bear to look at her because that was Lance's smile, and it was completely wrong.
"That's the point, Keith, dear. He's a killer. It's in his blood. It's his heritage. But he chose not to follow his instincts, for you. I understand why. He chose you over the princess. And Hera can't stand that. There was only one reason she let him live, all those years ago. If he rebelled against his purposeā¦Well, I doubt she'll be on his side! So, if you want to save him from a very pointless death, you'll have to do as I say. Got it?"
