What Would The Steam Team Do At A Day By The Beach? Drabble #1
Thomas: I see him playing volleyball against James and Emily while being teammates with Percy and Tobyās the referee. After a few rounds, he would goof off with James and Percy on the sand or sometimes play around in the water. I see him trying to root for the Steam team surfers who are putting on a show while eating food in the cabana, resting up. Then joins Henry to dig up a huge whole so water wonāt attack their tent.
Percy: Same thing with Thomas on the volleyball games but play around with him and James. I also see him join Emily who brought her crocheting stuff underneath the beach cabana and she would teach him how to make cute animals out of it. He would join Thomas on having lunch together as they rest from the playing, gazing at the surfers.
James: He would most likely hang out with Thomas on volleyball when Percy goes to Emily afterwards. I see him and Thomas trying to get wet by the beach waves. Knowing him not like salt water on him, I can see him getting a tan but got sunburnt because he forgot to put on sunscreen. I see him relaxing under the shade with his sunglasses on laying on the mat before being dragged by Thomas to watch the surfers show off.
Henry: He would definitely collect seashells with Toby and Edward but got bit by a crab by accident on his right toe. I envisioned him trying to make sure no seagull took the lunch the Steam team brought and kept watch from them. I donāt know why but he would also try and make a tall sandcastle with the shells he found and some seaweed. Also try and dig up a hole with a shovel he brought as well, afraid the ocean will took everyone away. And his sandcastle thatās not finished.
Emily: She would have a few rounds on volleyball being Jamesā teammate but afterwards successfully get a tan and laughs at James for being sunburnt. Emily would bring her crocheting stuff and would do that under the beach cabana that Gordon and Edward put up together. Percy comes along to join her on that as she teaches him while enjoying the snacks that were brought.
Toby: I can see him bring in books from his cabin, sit on a lounge chair, and reads it. He was the referee of the volleyball game but chooses to have chaos as he tries to stir James and Percy to be at each otherās faces. Heās in his own world but keeps the snacks and food nearby him on watch and even put on a bandage on Henryās crab injury. He made it clear to the Steam Team: Donāt disturb him and his peace.
Edward: Edward is the type who would help Gordon put on the cabana, he was responsible for majority of the food put together and drinks that are put in a cooler. Plus a mini emergency kit. And the ONLY person who brought sunscreen for the others. He wants his friends and boyfriend to have a good time but also wants to go out in the ocean with a surfboard he rented with Gordon. He may be old (in my eyes, heās in his 30s) but that man can put on a show when it comes to surfing. It even surprised Gordon as well but the two would go head on with the waves. Another thing that happened is that he would casually take someoneās sandwich ā¦ (maybe Henryās) that hasnāt been touched and eat it like a seagull. No one notices him doing that at all.
Gordon: Gordon was the other person who put on the cabana and helped Henry find seashells on the sand. Didnāt warn Henry about the crab but feels bad for it so he helped Henry go back to the tent for Toby who was the only one there at the moment. Gordon would watch the volleyball game but didnāt root for neither teams because he knows itās gonna end bad. With Edward, he rented a surfboard, very confident he can do lots of tricks and feel ashamed Edward wants to surf alongside him. His first try on the wave, he got wiped out by it but didnāt fall on the other tries. Very surprised Edward can surf and would compete with him to see who can last the longest.
SHIP TIME! Donāt judge me for them.
1x6: Thomas and Percy would share snacks as they rested together but tries to make jokes along the way underneath the cabana. Afterwards, they would go on a race down by the beach by kicking a random ball they brought along with laughter. And fighting off seagulls for Henry.
3x4: Gordon would casually surf but he can hear Henry cheer for him the loudest (but also for Edward too, Henry could barely do it thanks to James). This gave Gordon more confidence as he watched Henry dig his hole when he and Edward remained at the ocean on the surfboards, waiting for more waves with a smile. He would return to the sand from the ocean and helped Henry finish decorating the sandcastle.
2x5: James would watch the surfers who are on the waves but shouted every time Edward is showing off, making Henry looked at him as if he was crazy. LET JAMES SUPPORT HIS MANS! Edward would returned to the sand with Gordon but James tackled him down in the ocean waves in a hug out of nowhere. And they would cuddle under the cabana, all soaky wet.
Toby would FaceTime Henrietta while he was reading and would give a casual monologue of whatās happening at the beach. It would make Henrietta laugh by Tobyās sarcasm when he exaggerates some parts about today but goes back to reading his wife the book on the lap as she listens to him.
Emily would make mini animals from crocheting for Mavis like the seagulls and maybe shells Henry found, trying to recreate that. I see her trying to take some of those shells to bring for Mavis to bags and takes pictures with a Polaroid to show Mavis.
To end the beach day at night, the Steam team would gather around at a bonfire away from the cabana together, sitting the sand with sticks that has marshmallows at the end. The bonfire was made by Edward because if it was made by anyone else, it would go wrong. Thomas and Percy who are sitting next to each other, sing some silly campfire song with James, Emily, and Henry. Gordon brought an acoustic guitar to strum along with Henry leaning on his shoulder. Toby would record it all with his camera, sitting next to Emily whoās humming along and having his marshmallow toasting up. Edward and James would be next to each other, holding hands, wrapped in one towel.
As the stars gazed above the Steam team twinkling bright.

Hey. Why isnāt the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isnāt that fucked up? Does anyone else think thatās absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! Thatās a big deal! Iāve never thought about it before but now that I have, itās ridiculous to me that thatās not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why donāt we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
Itās July 20th. Thatās the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. Iām ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and Iām going to have a goddamn potluck. Youāre all invited.

we have dandelions EVERYWHERE, they are basically our State Weed, it is absolutely impossible that my mom has never interacted with a dandelion before, this requires further investigation

my mom is in fact aware that dandelions exist. she temporarily forgot the name and there was some miscommunication.

she is familiar with this flower. she knows the name of this flower. she declines to believe, however, that these are also dandelions
she does not believe these are the same plant. I tried to explain, and she thought I was either misinformed or lying. so I asked her what exactly did she think the yellow ones were called?
she answered, with complete confidence: Daffodils.

reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics

Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like itās from a shield. If itās hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.
And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isnāt there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!
So what is a rain shadow?
Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.
this is because, as clouds are forced upwards by rising land, they cool and dump their rain. so the side of the mountain facing the ocean (or an inland sea, or a great lake) gets all the rain as the clouds are squeezed out, and the opposite side gets nothing.
my favorite thing is the american great lake snowbelts! so, the 'flow' of weather across north america, in very general terms, blows from the northwest on down south and east to the gulf of mexico.
so the wind is blowing from west to east, and in the winter it's a dryer wind than in the summer because it's colder. but after blowing across a great lake for a hundred miles, the wind is wet again. and that wet turns into snow. so for all of these lakes, the big cities are on the west side, not the east sides, because the east sides absolutely suck to live on.
the sole exception is buffalo, NY, which literally has to be there because, unfortunately, that's where all the important canal stuff between lake ontario and lake erie is happening.

On a Watsonian level, sure.
On a Doylistic level, Mordor looks like that because plate tectonics was a fringe, ludicrous, laughable theory that nobody outside serious geology nerds had ever heard of until scientists proved seafloor spreading in the early 1960s. The first edition of the LotR trilogy was published in 54-55. We literally did not know that plate tectonics was real until almost a decade after the book was published, so obviously, it was not something Tolkien could have been considering as he made his maps.
I don't know enough meteorological history to know when white people figured out about rain shadows and added it to geology classes, or what would have been taught about volcanoes and such. But any education Tolkien got on the subject would have been in childhood/adolescence; his college education focused on the liberal arts, not the sciences, and his professional study was linguistics and the middle ages. So anything Medieval and earlier European authors wrote about he had a pretty good chance of knowing about. But not much exposure to modern science. So his science knowledge was probably limited to "what English schools taught at the turn of the 20th Century."
I mean, it's true he didn't know about plate tectonics, but he did know what mountains look like, and that it's not normally That. And it wasn't his style to break that kind of norm without cause.
LotR has recurring themes of the reckless imposition of one's will on the natural world creating ugliness, an order you thought was inherently an improvement that in fact is inferior to what you have displaced. (Typified by reckless tree-felling; a reflection of the despoiling of the English countryside and the world by Progress.)

#the rain shadow thing otoh was undoubtedly total ignorance#but those mountains were made as the fortress of a demigod#too steeped in evil to understand beauty#it's *supposed* to look like something that Shouldn't Exist#like quite often this is something that happens in worldbuilding yes#things are arranged Wrong because a person doesn't grasp the underlying logic#but mordor is a bad example for the same reason it's an obvious one#it's So Very Wrong because it was designed to be wrong#to give you a bad feeling with how much it shouldn't look like that#if he just wanted it unapproachable on all sides it could've been in a caldera formation it didn't *need* corners#the corners were a choice#tolkien's job involved lots of looking at maps and things okay#meanwhile people whose lives revolved around the weather generally knew where the rain happened#long before it was formalized into 'rain shadow effect'#people not having The Science doesn't mean they don't have eyes and brains
I wrote an entire paper in college analyzing the geology of the Misty Mountains and to a lesser extent the White Mountains (the Misty Mountains are easier because we get a cross-section via Moria). One thing I discovered that still knocks me for a loop when I think about it is:
Moria is the only place in Middle-Earth where mithril is found, right? That's kind of a big deal. So, why? What makes that location so special? Is it just random?
I found a paper that had just been published *that year*, 2011 or 2012 as I was writing it, that studied the locations of precious-metals mines in the Pyrenees, the similarly long skinny mountain chain that divides Spain and France. This paper discovered that where there was a bend in the mountain chain, from one of the continental plates having an awkward corner in it that got subducted under the other plate, that had dug deeper into the mantle and caused precious-metal-bearing ores to flow up to the surface in ways they didn't do anywhere else in the Pyrenees.
There's a conversation in The Fellowship of the Ring where one of the hobbits -- I don't have my copy handy or I'd get the direct quote -- asks why they can see the Misty Mountains ahead of them at one point if they're still heading south from Rivendell, and it's explained that south of Caradhras (which you may recall is the surface mountain under which Moria runs) the mountain chain bends and runs southwest instead of due south for a while.
Tolkien had absolutely no way to know *why* this particular feature of a mountain range was associated with intrusions of rare and unique metal ores, but he had gone backpacking in mountains enough to know How Things Should Look.
(And as prev excellently points out, when Jirt made screwed-up geology it was very much on purpose. Mordor shouldn't be square! Mount Doom shouldn't be doing any of the things it does! A composite volcano shouldn't even have especially hot lava! Even the Gulf of Udun, the circular feature at the upper left corner of the square, shouldn't be like that -- perfectly round features should be impact craters or calderas, not The Mountains Just Do This In A Suspiciously Convenient Way. These are all the way they are because Sauron forced them to be, in defiance of the laws of nature. Remember, he's akin to Balrogs and was a Maia of Aulƫ -- he's a volcano spirit in many ways.)

This also serves as an excellent example of why worldbuilding needs - more than realism - to be cohesive and work with the themes of your story.
