I sit down to do my job as a character designer. I spend hours meticulously crafting a design. flourishes. unique design traits. I wipe sweat off my gross artist forehead. crack my knuckles. start colouring. I try seven different colour schemes. tweak the saturations. hues. contrast values. I have an understanding of colour language. complimentaries. what different hues and tones express about a chracter. I step back. I'm pleased. Last dnd session for a while with this campaign and boy what a doozy it was! Turns out bloodlust easily warps into the terrible idea to bite a vampire under the right circumstances. But hey! It’s fine. The vampire’s dead now! (Maybe)

Notice with Dess he doesn’t seem confused by her absence, he doesn’t ask why she stopped coming by - instead he wonders if Kris could “get her to come back”, then pauses, grimaces, and says “just kidding” before changing the subject.

OK. Into my unwanted speculation now. This part is mostly me reaching. This part is Not backed by anything canon im literally just throwing shit at the wall and reading way too much into this scene.

I Don’t think he’s being a dick on purpose here - I think he’s bringing this up as a subtle nod to his deal with Kris and RK (who. Might be Dess. Unclear if Tenna knows that, he probably doesn’t) like if the thing promised to him was that he’d have all the people watching him he wants, then that implies a promise to get people who disappeared to come back.

Him grimacing and saying “just kidding” is probably because Kris made a face at him, not because it was awkward or accidentally tone deaf, but because he was referencing the deal.

would also explain why he brought it up live, why he seemed so excited asking about it, and why he claimed it was just a joke to shut it down the way Kris often does (in their claiming things were pranks) throughout the game.

He’s confused and hurt by everyone else’s absence, but not Dess. He knows she’s not around anymore, he really wants her to come back, but he’s at no point curious or confused as to why she left, which he is with every other character that stopped showing up.

Also in my beautiful mind palace it could be a hint that he does know something about RK but that’s a. Major major stretch on my end. And probably not true.
