Did I just employ the "Treat Them Like You are A Kindergarten Teacher Again" method with my insurance company today? I surely did. Did it work? Probably better than intended because I made an actual doctor feel contrite.
So, my insurance has been trying to not cover my SNRI because it is new on the market and no generic available yet, so pricey.
I apply for a refill and the request gets locked for review. Again. For the 3rd time.
This time I call and immediately ask to speak to the actual doctor making these clinical decisions. Very politely. Must be a slow day because they allow it.
ME: [Teacher voice] I'm calling in regards to the SNRI you have placed a lock on. Why was this decision made?
DOC: Well, there are dozens of other medications on the market in that tier, and far cheaper for you and [insurer]. We have sent a request to your doctor to consider alternatives.
ME: I am aware of that. So, can you do me a HUGE favor and look up my prescription history really quickly and tell me how many SSRIs and SNRIs were only filled once in 2022 for me, showing they were poorly tolerated?
DOC: It looks like eight.
ME: Great job! Now, can you please look at my genetic test for psychiatric drug tolerance and tell me how many medications are listed in the safe category?
DOC: Two.
ME: Awesome! Now, can you tell me what type that other drug is that I'm not taking?
DOC: Yeah, totally, it's an MAOI.
ME: That's correct, you're really knowledgeable! Should I be taking something as dangerous as an MAOI with my other medications, or even just in general?
DOC: It's contraindicated for sure.
ME: It is! So true! So, last question since you've been incredibly smart and helpful. Is it less expensive for [insurer] to pay out for the medication knowing they already get a huge manufacturer discount anyway, or is it more expensive for them to pay for me to need potentially long-term inpatient psychiatric care?
DOC: I'll clear the code, ma'am and flag it as medically necessary. I'm sorry about this.
ME: I appreciate you SO MUCH. You have a great day now.

Kill them with kindness
BUT KILL THEM
The Odyssey but retold as a low-stakes modern adventure of one guy out with his girlfriend leaving the bar with his buddies to do just one (1) simple thing real quick, it'll take like 15 minutes tops, he'll be right back, but then some bullshit happens and the trip keeps getting more complicated as more bullshit keeps happening while he just tries to get back to the bar because he promised his girlfriend that he'd get back and he knows that she's still there because she told him she'd wait there.
And by the time he finally gets back it's almost 3 am and the bar is about to close while she's sitting there stone cold sober, surrounded by 5 drunk guys unsuccessfully trying to convince her to give up on waiting for him and go home with one of them instead. And the guy shows up to proceed to beat the shit out of them before explaining himself to her like hey sorry bullshit kept happening, my phone fell into a storm drain and my wallet got stolen when I was trying to find someone who'd borrow me a phone so I could call and
His girlfriend had been fending off the 5 drunk guys for most of the evening by explaining that even if she was going to ditch her boyfriend, she can't possibly leave without finishing her beer, which she is keeping perpetually full via careful sleight of hand where she's just pouring it back and forth into and out of the pitcher.
However the drunk guys are also drinking, and eventually she can't afford to buy another pitcher for the table so she can't keep up the ever-full beer glass trick. At this point she has to resort to setting up the pool trick shot that she's never seen anyone but her boyfriend pull off, and says she'll leave with whoever manages the shot first.
That buys her another hour or so and then, finally, her boyfriend makes it back. He looks like shit, hair down and just a mess, he's wearing an entirely different jacket that he got from an alley, and barely recognizable—especially to 5 guys who've been drunk for hours now. He lurks for a minute, finds out what's going on, and proceeds to pull off the trick shot first try. Throws the jacket off, fixes his hair with a hair tie his girlfriend lends him, finally looks like himself again, and THEN beats the shit out of them with the pool cue.
yuh i was there, that's how it happened

the cute slimes in fantasy-game-styled shows and such are too mammalian in their behavior imo. many slimes are absolutely adorable for sure but behaviorally they should resemble a small amphibian or maybe a slug. you're carrying your pet slime around and showing it various parts of your inn room for the night and it's staring at everything blankly with its little dot eyes and your party's fighter who is watching you asks "does it... enjoy this?" and you say "i genuinely have no idea." you can tell it's excited for mealtime because it slimes it way over to the veggie scraps 8% faster than normal. you carry it around in a repurposed orb shaped potion bottle terrarium on your belt and you drip some well water in there occasionally to keep the humidity up. the life of a slime.
and for the love of GOD if you're free roaming your slime dont YELL at it when it gets goop all over your gear!!! Healthy slimes shed!!! They're a destructive pet!! I don't want to weigh in on the terrarium vs free roam discourse because i dont have enough hours in the day but if you DO think its more ethical to free roam I ask how you think it makes sense to yell at it and then comedically stretch its 'cheeks' (its a fucking slime it doesnt have cheeks and also why would you even do that to an animal with a face) when it exhibits a natural fucking function that its KNOWN. FOR.
this is what i've been SAYING!! like, you're the one that decided to adopt a domesticated DUNGEON SCAVENGER, if you let it free roam your inn rooms or camp unattended it is going to attempt to scavenge! especially if they decided to go fully hands-off with maintenance and just "let it free feed, like it would in nature" like how did you think its "natural" feeding behavior worked. it absorbs things through its membrane! it has to crawl around and get slime on things to do that! it's in the damn name! if you wanted a clean pet you should have looked for a sprite or something.
and don't even get me started on this popular perception of slimes as completely elastic bouncy creatures that can be endlessly squashed and stretched like a stress ball. i've seen so many poor little guys with visible caving or full-on tears due to careless handling. and the treatment is so simple if you catch it early but there's just such an education gap in recognizing the early warning signs of damage. ugh.
hey, bar wench here. I actually DO want to weigh in on terrarium vs free roam
Please fucking flask your slime when you're on the tavern floor or in your room. Like outside of cleanliness standards (its an adventuring tavern. we know the deal. if anything bears and dire wolf pets are more of a hassle) The cleaning supplies we use are incredibly dangerous to slimes, who are used to feeding off moss and demonic skeleton dust. To say nothing of the rooms, which like. guys. do you know how many wizards stay with us? leaving their implements unsealed all over the place? We can try to clean it up but slimes membrane is incredibly sensitive!!!
I promise you Ms. Honey doesnt actually care if she needs to sleep in a flask for one night. You're supposed to flask-train them for veterinary appointments anyway 🙄
They are going places
the critical thing to understand about sora kingdomhearts is that when he was 14 a duck told him he wasn't allowed to express sadness and he has taken that 100% to heart every day for the rest of his life
please read this even if you're not indian. especially if you're not indian.
you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.
first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.
now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:
in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.
and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.
and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.
it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:
• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.
• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.
• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.
• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.
• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.
• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.
and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.
what i'm asking:
if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.
if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.
india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.
we can still save her. but only loudly.
reblog. share. don't scroll past.
one thing about me is that if someone posts an url w the tracking info still on im not clicking it. if i really like them and im on my computer ill copy paste the nice part of the url but i am straight up not clicking that
delete everything after the ? in the url for me. Okay? 💕
someone in the notes had one singular question about this so I'm gonna infodump.
in any URL, a ? character indicates the start of a string of data being passed to the page. sometimes that data is perfectly innocent, e.g. it's often used to pass filters to a catalog page. Maybe you're looking at shirts and there's an option to filter by color, so you click the "blue" color filter. Then ?color=blue gets added to the end of the URL on your results page.
You can pass a pretty wide variety of data this way. A YouTube URL that you want to start at timestamp 45s will have a ?t=45 at the end of it. Search results for "turtleneck" may have ?search=turtleneck (s or q are also common in place of search). You can pass multiple data points connected with an ampersand, like ? s=turtleneck&color=blue. It depends on what the site engineers have built the page to recognize - you can't pass ?color=blue to a YouTube URL and expect it to do anything special - but a general convention is to make the string semi-readable with recognizable English words or shorthand. A savvy user can try writing in their own query strings and see what they get. (A hacker can take advantage of this if it's done poorly - more on that later.)
A very simplistic tracker, like from Tumblr's share button, might include ?source=share. In this case, nothing about the page content is different, but the site servers can tell that you clicked on a shared link rather than just typing the URL directly into a browser or clicking a bookmark. It's pretty naive, but sites love data even if that data is naive.
A more sophisticated tracker, like what Instagram has started doing, may encode more data. When you share an Instagram link, your username is encoded in the ? string, and then anyone who clicks the link will know who originally shared it (and get prompted to follow them). It's very obnoxious and sucks for privacy so this is where you get into the territory of SANITIZE YOUR URLS.
Something like an Amazon search result, that has a URL five miles long? It can be hard to tell what data it's encoding exactly, because it's not polite enough to use recognizable words, but probably none of it is crucial to the page. So yes, @starsailor83 , you can delete everything after the ?. You can delete the ? itself if you want; usually there's no difference between an empty ? string and a missing one.
When I sanitize a URL, I test the shortened version before sharing it to make sure it brings me where I expect and there wasn't an actually important string buried among the trackers. Usually the important ones are in plain English, sometimes interspersed with stuff like %20 (an encoded space character).
So:
https://www.somewebsite.com/catalog/?s=macguffin&zip=99999&range=10&source=share&uid=666
S was my search term, zip & range were filters I set: I want to see all results for macguffin within 10 miles of zip code 99999. But source and uid? Little suspect. UID probably stands for "user ID". I don't need to share my user ID with the person I'm looking at macguffins with.
Shortens to:
https://www.somewebsite.com/catalog/?s=macguffin&zip=99999&range=10
A NOTE ON HACKING: If you ever see the word <script> in a URL, or its encoded version %3cscript%3e, for SURE delete the whole string. Proceed under the assumption that someone is trying to hack your account on that site. If the site isn't up to security snuff, clicking that link unedited will allow bad actors to run whatever they want in your browser, so don't let them! (This is an old trick, so most modern sites should know better than to allow it, but hoo boy you do not want to know how much of modern infrastructure is not up to standard.)
WHY DONT I WANT THIS?
Thinking of you wherever you are
helpful tattoo reminder: they are technically Injuries so u have to eat a lot of calories drink a lot of water and sleep a lot after so your body can Heal The Injury
another helpful tattoo reminder: the 24-48 hours after you get a tattoo your brain can not be trusted in regards to whether or not you should have gotten that tattoo, if you have somehow ruined your life, if it turned out ugly, etc. ignore that
finally, while i am at it: always bring a candy bar and a sugary drink to your appointment for blood-sugar reasons (worst case scenario) or so you can have a treat (unilaterally applicable)
this has been your friendly neighborhood haver of 19* tattoos (assorted sizes and placements)
*not totally sure here. bad at counting
Can I just emphasize that not everyone reading this has yet encountered the information that injuries require food, hydration, and sleep? I think the way many people associate rest and injury is that you rest the injury itself to avoid making it worse, but overlook that the healing process itself requires rest regardless of if not-rest directly injures it further.
Also exercise is a form of controlled injury so that as your body heals it heals stronger. You also need food-hydration-rest for strength and cardiovascular improvements after exercise.
Made Cloud more uncomfortable yay
squeenix changing TWEWY to take place in 2018 is so funny because it is very CLEARLY set in 2007 like. look at it.
The way my brain has decided it works is that in TWEWY world, the Inversion of Shinjuku caused a giant explosion of Imagination that caused the rest of the world to experience 14 years of innovation and culture in the span of 3 years. So it's actually just a 2010 that looks a lot like our 2021. Which is fucking insane but also I just love that these games are little time capsules of the culture and year they were created for :3
again reminding you to try the world ends with you
