so grace is probably alarming to most eridians at first because he's a lanky wet alien with too few limbs, yes--but what if he ends up being terrifying in a sort of divine way instead of a repulsive one?
like. a creature that perceives the intangible? a creature that walks with thin permeable membranes bared to the air, whose blood contains elixir that can destroy pathogens without heat? a creature that is impossibly fragile yet resilient? a creature that breathes potently flammable gas to survive? a creature that is loud all over and speaks in a strange and frightening monotone, who thought it would die for you? who gave up its home in the heavens for you without meeting you first, whose first words to your people were probably something along the lines of We saved your star. It's gonna be okay. Don't be afraid.
just a lighthearted comic
Just touched grass. 0/10 experience, not recommended. Stick to fanfiction guys.

Name one hero light hair x dark hair ship that was happy.
You can't.
Do not be the Dictator of your story
I get it, you want everyone to see the world you imagined the same way you imagined it - bacause it's just better that way. So you put all your heart in the descriptions: the appearence of the characters, how they are dressed, their personality, the setting, the wordbuilding - everything is explained from the start.
But here's why that's broblematic: first of all, you become a dictator of your own world and the reader doesn't have the power to maturate an opnion of their own. Their immagination is not gonna be stimulated properly because it's not about creating a mental image following the instructions of the author, it's about having some guidelines and filling the gaps with whatever they seem fit. That's gonna create an emotional connection with your story way quicker than trowing the reader into a new word without a map.
Second of all, it's impractical for the author too. Putting too many descriptions can disturb the pace of the narration, and at some point you're gonna get repetitive: there's a limit at how much vocabolary you can use without sounding forced. Your reader is gonna get tired too at some point, so it's really just wasted energy. No, you don't need to explain the hair color, the eyes color, the skin color, the dress color of every character - if you really feel the need to specify something chose a couple of traits and mention them, but don't make the drescription overpowering the perception of this character. If you do, it can later be complicated to change this perception: it will take more time as it's already radicated. Let the reader choose what they like and what they don't.
Third of all, you have to ask yourself if what you're are wrinting is really useful or you are just writing for the sake of adding words. Don't be afraid of short chapters, and if you are then just merge two chapters into one. Not only that, you have to ask yourself: if I was reading this for the first time, would I want for this scene to be longer? This can help you understand how descriptions can feel too much. I know that worldbuilding and character design are fun and all, but you have to leave the reader some freedom, otherway it can be overbearing.
The point is, you can't control the perception of the reader, so don't waste your time and their attention - because that too is limited. Choose what's significative and stick to it: you can always add more depth and details later.
Top 3 best things a fictional character can do:
Pass out from pain or exhaustion.
Be captured/kidnapped (+ bound and gagged).
Be comforted by their loved ones after a traumatic event.
Being an author is scary because what if im accidentally copying another book/author
in the absence of ao3 I think we should go become tattoo artists, flowershop owners, students, members of a band, long term rivals, coworkers, or get selected for a politically advantageous arranged marriage.
Let's take this shit to the streets
everyone rejoice, Ao3 is back
talking to you about my comfort characters is my form of love language ♡
