Gaster Swap Theory

So the general fandom consensus since Deltarune came out is that Sans and Papyrus switched universes from Deltarune to Undertale. One thing I haven’t seen anyone address though is whether Gaster traveled universes as well, and how this changes the fandom perception of these characters.

If the event that caused the universe shift was him falling into the core, this is implied to already have happened by his role in Deltarune as the voice. Therefore, the skelebros have already changed universes and the pair in Undertale would not have been related to royal scientist Gaster, but Deltarune’s Gaster. If the event that made them swapped universes hasn’t happened yet, thus would still be true.

Therefore only way I can see the Undertale skelebros being related to the Undertale universe Gaster is if the universe swap happened before Gaster even fell into the Core, which may complicate the plot a bit unnecessarily. So I think it’s much more likely that our fandom perception of which Gaster is related to which Skelebros may be off. I haven’t heard anyone else talk about this so I’d love to hear othes’ thought.

Dynamic of gaster & player is crazy

A lot of the fandom being obsessed with theories on who he is and piecing together his lore, sinking their teeth into everything about him as breadcrumbs are set out for us to follow.

Years later(?) Gaster becomes obsessed in his experiments of being able to contact us and creating an entire story just to have the equivalent of an eldritch multidimensional being be put in a rat maze.

The player falling for it hook, line & sinker as they thirst for the same thing as Gaster does. Complete parallels to each other on opposite yet same sides. The methods of finding information being stark contrasts to each other.

Gaster feels realer than any fictional character ever has to me, which is crazy since we’ve possibly never even seen him.

So much of Deltarune is about layers of reality. The Darkworlds are fiction within fiction and our characters have to decide if that discredits their importance or not. Characters like the secret bosses seem to see past the fiction and wish to become ‘real’ in some way to gain freedom. We directly control our main character and others in ways that seem supernatural to them, but is just a video game to us.

And then there’s Gaster, who unlike any other character converses with us explicitly. Who weaves us this story, lets us access this Deltarune. And I think in that way he is the embodiment of the secret bosses’ freedom motif. He becomes real through our investment in his story. If realness is dictated by your proximity to our reality, then Gaster is real, for he’s found his ways into our minds and souls.

Not only does he become real, but he controls us, just like he presumably does the secret bosses. You’ve felt it. The heartwarming joy when Susie finally joins the party for real. The stark sadness of Ralsei breaking down over his prophetic visions. That was Gaster. Just as you puppet around Kris’ soul, so does Gaster yours. I don’t think it’s malicious, more built from curiosity and love for his creations, us. Like us, he wants to see every possible ending, just how far does the darkness go? But he needs us for that. His angel, his Deltarune.

Memory and Forgetting in the Undertale 10th Anniversary Stream

There’s a lot of talk of memory and forgetting in the Undertale 10th Anniversary stream that makes me think so much of Gaster and the Forgotten man.

The wrong number song remix gets rid of the Gaster reference, and Toby mentions “remembering things for no reason” after it

The intense focus on memory with the echo flowers. Still, there is a limited word count, blocking off all we can know

So many areas (Gaster door included) that we get to see but can’t explore fully

The Christmas Tree monster sums up my thoughts pretty well, “…sometimes I forget, there’s a whole world where you ain’t looking… a whole world of people you never talked to. A whole world of people you never met. Thanks, it feels like you reminded me of something important.”

When we forget people like Dess, Chara, Gaster, the world keeps spinning. But they leave their mark. I’m not sure if we’ll ever see any of these characters fully, but their impact is still imense. Don’t forget.

The fact we've literally never seen a human with gender in UT/DR is making me start to think that humans in this world literally do not have gender and identifying as genders is the UT/DR human version of being non-binary

It wouldn’t be unprecedented. All the ghosts we meet also seem to be born nonbinary, though may transition to another gender if so desired. Which could make sense if you think of how ghosts in popular myth are ‘born’ as humans in a way, making them in turn also nonbinary

Something I was thinking of regarding the prophecy is the perception the people of Hometown must have it. Specifically, the belief that anyone can be part of the prophecy.

But, is that true? We’re not sure exactly sure how much of the prophecy is known by Hometown’s residents, but if Catty, a person who self admittedly falls asleep in church can remember details as specific as one of the heroes having horns, it’s most likely as specific as the Darkworld version we see.

So, what do we, and therefore the monsters of Hometown, know about the three heroes? Well, one is a girl who is also a monster. Pretty vague, I can see how they may believe anyone in hometown could become her. Next, the prince of darkness. No one in hometown is a prince, so they’d probably just assume it’s an outside force, or perhaps someone could get married to royalty if we’re stretching. But then, there’s the cage.

Described as human, or having human parts at least. There’s only one human in Hometown as far as we know, and that’s Kris. I’m not sure if this is something Toby considered or not. But, couldn’t that possibly lead to some like Catty who seem to genuinely believe the heroes will come from their town, possibly seeing Kris as a strong candidate for being a hero?

I mean, one of the big things we know about Kris is the high expectations they feel are placed on them. Everyone in town loves their brother, their shared room is filled with trophies of his accomplishments. Theres also pressure seemingly coming from Carol with whatever the scheme going on there is, possibly built on guilt from Dess going missing. I can imagine this sort of rumored notion in the town around Kris, not only as the only human, but as the only one with a clear hint of connection to the prophecy. I doubt anyone would bring it up to them, but it’s just another silent expectation weighing on them. Expectations that cause Kris to draw away from others, expectations so heavy that they may perhaps wish they weren’t themselves. So they wear toy horns not only to be more like their family, but to be less like them, to blend in and not be noticed. They can’t live up to the expectations of being like their brother or the hero they see him as. Maybe they even give away their soul and themselves so that someone else has to be that hero, anyone other than them.

Gerson reminds me so much of my Jewish great grandfather so I may be biased when I say this, but he feels very Jewish coded to me. Like firstly, his name is Gerson, a Hebrew name. Then, we have the scarf he wears on his shoulders, which looks a lot like a more simple, non-traditional tallit

Obviously he’s not actually Jewish as Deltarune has its own religion, but I see a lot of people just equating that religion directly to Christianity which I think can limit analysis and theory crafting. Deltarune takes a lot of stuff from Christianity sure, but it’s not as cut and dry as just Christianity 2 Electric Boogaloo. It’s nice to see some traditions from different religions were also represented, like with the Guei or incense burning, and it’s interesting what these elements may say about the story’s greater themes. Hell, even the angel of death Azrael is mostly a Jewish and Islamic figure if I remember correctly

Weeheehee this post got pretty popular and that makes me very happy :•) I wanted to add on something I saw some people discussing in the tags, which is that many people who practice Jeudism encourage a more critical lens when looking at holy texts and their moral systems. Which is notable as it would mirror Gerson’s own philosophy! Yes, he does question the prophecy, but it comes from a place of respect. I mean, his son is a religious leader and he wrote a book based on it, he had to have. His questioning of it isn’t out of disdain, but love! The same goes for us with Deltarune. We don’t want to find the eggs and secret bosses because we hate the game. We do it because we love it and want to explore it even further! Same for fans works, which Gerson seems to also commentate on.

I feel hesitant making these big generalizations on Judaism, espically as it’s only my mom’s side who is Jewish and I’m not very close to any of them. As well, this isn’t to deny that some branches of Judaism don’t encourage questioning, or that no other religions do. But I think based on personal experience and the consensus of other Jews in the tags, it does seem to ring true. I mean, just look at the Mah Nishtanah, or 4 Questions, which at Passover sedar the youngest participant is suppose to ask. Sure, these questions are mostly a tool for giving the child religious info, but it shows an encouragement for curiosity, espically in the youth. And isn’t that exactly what Gerson encourages of our own young Deltawarriors?

Can we talk about how much Spamton must have actually cared for Tenna? It’s hard to imagine the spiteful little man cares about anyone, but it actually seems like he did at one point. If you go through the S-rank minigames, you’ll know Spamton seemingly was going to give Tenna the secret behind his success, of what made him a Big Shot. Spamton is the greediest, most self-centered creature known to man, and yet he was willing to tell Tenna that? Actually insane. Not to mention the Tropics of Love or the entire room just for fan mail. Also I know a lot of the Spamton Tenna divorce stuff is mostly a meme but given that the Spamton Sweepstake wedding ring page links to a thing about Tenna and that Spamton possesses an item called the Thorn Ring, can we be so sure it is a joke? Your honor I rest my case

Ow ohhh ow yeah that’s my heart-shaped object breaking into a million pieces. Genuinely great analysis, like after reading it I think I’ve fallen more in love with Deltarune that’s how good. Made me think of how when Spamton approaches Tenna in Chapter 3, it’s when Tenna is at his lowest. His employees are quitting, his game show is on fire, he’s no where near the Big Shot he once was. You’d think after hating on the cathode so much Spamton might use his one chance to interact with him to insult him, espically since he’s basically met the same fate Spamton did, the one Spamton seems to blame on Tenna. But other than lightheartedly calling him trash-heap, he doesn’t. At first it felt a bit out of character to me, but I think it makes sense if you remember how one of Spamton’s defining character traits is his desperation. Before it might have been his desperation to get Big again or to be Free, but he seems to change his view to Friendship a bit at the end of the NEO fight. Like don’t get me wrong, I don’t think we beat him and we made him do a complete personality 180, more I think he just came down to earth again for a bit (I mean literally with the wings breaking). Still a scummy business man, but he’s off that high yknow. Maybe for once instead of comparing his lot to another’s, he could just recognize Tenna’s situation and relate.
