Percy: I've been practicing multiplication and have gotten super fast at it.
Annabeth: OK, whats 40×3?
Percy: 56.
Annabeth: Percy, thats not even close
Percy: but it was fast.
Jason Grace who finally has enough and turns around and snaps at the people who poke and prod at him about being perfect. His team loses ten seconds in a race because someone tripped and fell and they stopped to help, and someone on one of the lower-ranking teams makes an offhanded comment about how Jason probably wished they hadn't wasted the time and they kinda nudge him like he's in on the joke but he turns around and shoves them flat onto their ass instead. He kicks dirt on them. He says, "don't even begin to act like you know what's going on inside my head," through gritted teeth with a voice that's just a shade more voice than growl.
I want Jason Grace playing a secret role board game and everybody keeps joking that Jason can't possibly be the villain because he'd give himself up, that's just how perfect Jason Grace is, he can't even fake being evil for thirty minutes, haha, meanwhile Jason grips tighter and tighter to the little traitor token in his pocket and loses the game, because he got lost in making that one specific person miserable.
Camp-wide truth or dare where people keep giving Jason all the tame fetch-quest type dares like they all think he'd immediately protest to anything even slightly straying from the rules to the point that he starts targeting other people with the worst dares he can think of, asking the nastiest truths, things that go beyond petty gossip into realities. They decide to end the game early because he asked one of the Aphrodite boys if it was true he laughed while his capture the flag teammate nearly bled out last weekend.
Jason Grace who had all of his wolf traits beaten out of him by a merciless system that couldn't see who he was beyond a name, a son, a soldier, so when he bares his teeth it's not to threaten he'll physically bite yknow. Because when he snaps it's not his jaw it's his tongue you need to worry about.
Jason Grace who is a menace, and not in a good cute fun way. Jason Grace who is a bully and an asshole and he sucks and he deserves it.
Apollo is an affectionate drunk.
However a drunk Apollo is a determined Apollo.
He will go and see his kids and you can’t stop him.
He is so drunk he forgets all about his chariot and runs out of Olympus to get a cab.
It is midnight and this cab driver can’t tell if he picked up god or the ultimate model but he isn’t asking questions.
A drunk Apollo is also very generous with his tips.
Gives the man a fat stack and runs into the woods.
This poor man.
Apollo’s poor kids.
He is holding Austin like a baby and sobbing.
Just sobbing because he loves his boy.
Calls all of his kids babies.
It gets so far he just grabs random kids and like-
“I know your godly parent doesn’t pay attention to you baby! I know! Come here!”
The campers don’t complain they are starved for parental attention.
He blacks out in the middle of the camp and is still very affectionate towards his kids.
Just not drunk affectionate.
This is a bit weird, but my nana is like this?
Not to be dramatic or anything but your nana is my new favorite person
The Solangelo Book Cover is Out and You Get to See Me Try to Guess the Entire Dam Plot
Less than an hour ago from the time I'm writing this, the cover was released. So first, let's take a good look at it:
Nico and Will in the depths Tartarus, in front of what seems to be the Mansion of Night. Now, according to my memory, Annabeth and Percy passed through the Mansion of Night (MoT) before reaching the Doors of Death, where they left Bob/Iapetus.
The premise is that Nico hears a voice calling from Tartarus, who he thinks is Bob. Rachel's latest prophecy tells that Nico will have to "leave something of equal value behind". Nico and Will head to Tartarus to save Bob, who could be in trouble.
Ohhhh shit.
That image is them looking for Bob, by heading to the last place he was: near the Doors of Death. Problem is, you get there by passing through Nyx's domain, where the MoT is.
Nico is holding Will's hand, desperate, pointing to the MoT. It's implied here that Nico is convincing Will to go to the MoT, although it doesn't look like Will is sold out on the idea.
"Leave something of equal value"? Nico is saving Bob, taking him away from Tartarus. He must leave something EQUAL to Bob behind, for an equal exchange. Let's not forget, Nico was the one who helped Bob and cared for him. Bob is important to Nico.
It's obvious he wouldn't leave Will behind. He wouldn't even think of it. He has to leave something IMPORTANT. So:
Nico chooses to sacrifice himself. Will probably has a mental breakdown. Fits Nico's character. Or...
Will sacrifices himself, and Nico is gonna go absolutely CRAZY. Plus a mental breakdown. Fits Will's character.
(Extra Pain) Nico tries to sacrifice himself, but Will becomes the sacrifice instead somehow, through choosing to sacrifice himself. Extra points if they have a whole fight about it and Nico is left absolutely broken after Will's sacrifice.
Also, what the hell is this "sacrifice"?
Since Bob probably died, and his voice is the regenerated version of himself, I think the sacrifice is DEATH. A soul for a soul.
Where am I going with this? Well, people have been speculating that this story will be a parallel to the story of Orpheus and Eurydice.
TLDR: they were married, Eurydice died, Orpheus bargained with Hades so her spirit would follow behind him to the surface to the living world, but he could never glance at her before they reached the surface or she'd stay dead forever. In his love, he failed to do so, causing her to stay dead permanently. A very sad tragedy.
See where I'm going? Will dies. Nico goes to the Underworld, bargains with Hades, Hades ends up giving the same conditions as Orpheus had. However, this could be the other way round. Orpheus was wonderful at music, close to Apollo too. It could be Will saving Nico.
One thing to note is that Eurydice was bitten by a venomous snake, causing her death. Maybe Nico sacrifices himself and Will feels quilty not being able to save him. As we know, Will takes pride in healing and saving others.
BUT- I think Will dying is more likely.
This winds back to the title. "The Sun and The Star"...a perfect metaphor for not only the 2 boys, but also for that theory! Solace, a name close to words related to the sun. Nico is a star.
"Nico di Angelo has been through so much. But there is a ray of sunshine in his life–literally: his boyfriend, Will Solace, the son of Apollo." A clue from the blog post.
Let's see what Riordan had to say about the title:
"I have to credit Mark with the title! They have a lot more poetry in their soul than I do. It is not a title I would ever have come up with by myself, but I’m very grateful because it is absolutely perfect."
This final clue that really sold me on my final theory of Nico-saves-Will is the fact that Oshiro is more poetic. The title is meant to be symbolic of the 2...you know the metaphor of the North Star? That star was used by explorers as a navigation symbol. It was a fixed point of reference, a way you could use to find your way home.
Will is the Sun, Nico is the North Star.
The Sun shines on, the beam of light that shines on in the darkness. But it cannot shine forever. In the depths of hell, the North Star guides him back home.
Ok but what are we gonna do in a few years when the Percy Jackson series is airing its final season and we have side by side images of a young Percy with his plain leather cord next to a noticeably older and wiser Percy with his completed camp neckace. Then what.
i find it really cool that rr had the rune-caster of the mcga crew be deaf considering that most viking charms and spells, i.e. the merseburg charms, etc., were meant to be either chanted or sung. like it's actually a pretty cool twist AND it made the story more diverse in the process.
I don’t trust any Percy Jackson analysis or opinions on tiktok, them bitches don’t understand basic comprehension. We get it you hate Jason, you hate Piper, you hate Rachael, you hate-
Will: So you get it?
Nico: Yep
Percy: You understand how to deal with a Karen?
Nico: Yes
[A few days later]
Nico: *tells off a new camper*
New camper: *runs away crying*
Will, who just showed up: Why did Karen run away sobbing just now?
Nico:
Will: Oh no…
Nico: Her name was Karen! I just did what you told me to when dealing with a Karen!
Will: NOT EVERY KAREN IS A KAREN
Nico: THAT DOESN’T EVEN MAKE SENSE
Has it been revealed yet whose POV we’re going to get for the solangelo book? Because I’m seriously torn.
On one hand, it’d be nice to have Nico’s POV on things for once. He’s been described as a lot of things throughout the books, by various different people. It is known that he has been through some serious shit. But what about Nico himself? What does he think of all of this? I want to hear his thoughts. I know we did technically get his pov in HoO but that’s crumbs compared to the potential batch of bread we might get. I’d like to especially see how he views his relationship with Will, given that he was born in the 30’s and grew up in a homophobic environment. And also his thoughts throughout his self healing journey.
But on the other hand, Will’s POV would be a great idea to introduce the readers to his character. So far, we don’t know that much about Will, so it’d be nice to learn about the way he views things through his narration, as well as his personality as a whole– I’ve said it plenty of times and I’ll say it again, Will Solace has a lot of potential to be a well written character! Also, what is Nico like through the eyes of someone that genuinely loves him (for once)?
Either way, we need to get the storytime on how they got together. BUT ON WHOSE POV?? I’m torn between both.
Anyways, I can’t wait for the book to drop. It’s been… *checks watch* YEARS-
okay I KNOW that we all wanna see Nico meet Jason in Elysium and have a dramatic moment, BUT WHAT ABOUT WILL SEEING MICHAEL AND LEE AGAIN???
like imagine the POTENTIAL for trauma there???? someone write a fanfic about this
The campus library has a “Pride every day” display of books, and most of them are books that have flags, and rainbows, and are very obviously explicitly about being queer and the queer experience.
And then there’s also the second two books of the Magnus Chase trilogy sitting there.
also, re: rick riordan's depiction of thoth being a breath of fresh air
the fact that the god of wisdom was shown to have relocated in the american south was really refreshing too. especially if you listen to the audiobooks. hearing a character who portrayed as being supernaturally intelligent and wise also having a tennessee accent is just...really nice? i'm not even from the southeast, but southern american accents are often used as shorthand for "stupid" or "unintelligent", so it was really refreshing. american media needs to take a break from "generic british" or "transatlantic" being the "smart people" accents. we need more characters who say "y'all" and "git" who are also the smartest people in the room
annabeth
while i’m thinking of it- a niche underrated theme thing in the first series that I’m absolutely OBSESSED with is Percy’s love interests representing the sort of different paths he could have gone down, and him choosing Annabeth is him choosing the balance between the two worlds he’s living between - the truest sense of being demi-god.
Rachel represented him ignoring his godly side and burying himself in mortal life, avoiding the divine side of his family and self and everything that comes with it. No prophecies or destinies, just Simple Mortal Worries.
Calypso was the idealistic side of the divine - magical servants, a beautiful island, lost to time and forgetting his duties and destinies. Spending the rest of his days in a paradise with a kind soul who understands his struggles with the gods but not to the point of hostility. The epitome of the fantastical and living without a care in the world.
Nico represented fully embracing divine heritage, and the brutality and hardships that come with being a demigod. Death, pain, loss, crushed childhood idealizations. Accepting that the fantastical isn’t always kind and losing touch with mortality - Nico spends most of his time pre-BoO away from both camps, he’s the King of Ghosts, and he has no fully mortal connections. It’s also important to note how much Nico is in play, particularly in direct contrast to Annabeth, in TLO. Nico is the one to give Percy the Curse of Achilles (literally making him functionally semi-immortal, which is in-part why he’s offered immortality specifically in the first place). When Percy is in the Styx seeing the vision of being with Annabeth at the lake and reaches out to her, Nico is the one to grab his hand and pull him from the river (Ideals of demigod life [Annabeth at CHB] versus the reality of where they currently are [Nico in the Underworld]). Nico arrives with (notably entirely undead & divine) reinforcements to the Battle for Manhattan which helps turn the tide. Nico is there when Percy is offered immortality, but when Percy denies it, he looks to Annabeth.
Annabeth represents striking the balance between divine and mortal - fighting wars, going to college. Growing up at camp and moving back home in a land beyond the (Greek) gods. Making amends with both your godly and mortal parents. When Percy picks Annabeth, he’s picking equilibrium between the different lives he’s living, not honing in on a specific aspect of it and neglecting the rest. Also, particularly in TLO and contrasting with Nico, there’s a bit element of trust and loyalty - Nico has complex loyalties to Percy, where even breaking Percy’s trust was done in a roundabout way of trying to protect him and ensure he wouldn’t be harmed either by Hades or in battle. Annabeth’s loyalty is simple and Percy not only trusts her fully, but Annabeth trusts him in turn without question, taking a poisoned knife for him despite not knowing if it would even harm him or not. Both absolutely put their lives on the line for Percy, but there’s a give and take, gains and sacrifices (Nico seeking information and reinforcements, Annabeth just straight up getting poisoned/stabbed). Also, notably, the scenarios surrounding those moments again reflects the extremes versus balances of how they integrate the mortal and divine together (Nico seeking knowledge about his family & memories [mortal] from his father [divine] vs Annabeth getting stabbed [mortal] with a poisoned [divine] knife) - again an extreme/disharmony versus simplicity and unity/balance.
if we get to titans curse and nico isn’t absolutely disgustingly obnoxious im breaking into the set and taking matters into my own hands i need him to be so lame and loud and overeager and i need percy to be exhausted after every interaction they have
ever since 2019 when the pjo show was rumored, people have been saying “the second i hear the percy actor say ‘look, i didn’t want to be a half blood’ i’m going to lose my mind”. that moment is now kids and i am doing exactly that
