People die on the job every summer. Remember that water and shade breaks are crucial when working in the heat, and calling emergency services for signs of serious heat illness (fatigue, nausea/vomiting, headaches, dizziness, clammy skin, confusion, agitation, slurred speech, high body temperature, rapid heart rate, etc.) is entirely appropriate. If you’re afraid to call 911 for reasons such as being undocumented, you’ll need to get very familiar with how to prevent, recognize, and treat heat illness. If you are symptomatic and not allowed a break, water, or medical treatment, walk out. No matter how broke you are, your job is not worth your life.

If you're in a Union Protected job, and you're told to do something illegal/unsafe, the reccomendation (as long as it will not endanger you or someone else!) is that you do the work first, and Grieve it immediately after (ie, get everything about that order as recorded as possible, bring it to your Steward, sue your employer). If the order PUTS YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER, DO NOT FOLLOW THE ORDER. If action is taken against you for not following the order, you have the rest of your union body to fight back with.
If you're not in a union, and you're frequently given orders to cut your breaks short, skip your breaks, not use the bathroom, not drink water, not wear Protective Equipment, are not given Protective Equipment (including sunscreen), not use sick time (or other paid leave) for doctor's visits, or not contact authorities in case of an emergency (and I don't mean the Company Doctor (avoid the Company Doctor whenever possible)), these things are ILLEGAL IN THE US. You should contact a Union Body and ask about joining or forming your own Local chapter! I suggest keeping yourself and your coworkers safe, because no job is worth your life!

Capitalism really dates for the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the rise of industry and cash crops over artisans and merchants. Vulture capitalism, with the notion that companies have no duties other than generating profit, is even younger.

I think a lot of this comes from the fact that most people don’t know the formal definition of capitalism. We all know the word, we’ve all seen the jokes, but very few people bother to actually define it unless they’re talking about political theory and philosophy, so it’s easy to end up with the impression that Capitalism = Money Can Be Exchanged For Goods And Services.
Capitalism is the economic system where most of the means of production (i.e. everything people need to have to make the stuff that everyone wants) are owned by private individuals or corporations, who then hire people to provide the labor necessary to produce things, with the intent of selling the output at a profit. It’s the difference between “you’re a carpenter and you make a chair and you sell it” and “you’re Richard Q. Richington who owns a chair factory, and you pay people to sell the chairs you paid other people to make and then all the excess money goes back to you.” There have been Richard Q. Richingtons on and off throughout history, but that being the norm for every single industry is a pretty recent development.
An alarming amount of people seem to think capitalism = all trade, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Robots was a crazy film for 2005. Growing up during the Obama administration set my standards too high for how a leader ought to act.

Remember: these atrocities are being done BY PEOPLE. You DO NOT EVER just "have to do the work." You do not EVER need to "just follow orders." If you're asked to do something atrocious, DO NOT DO IT. Stanley Millgram's Obedience to Authority experiments should be proof enough that any pushback against an inhumane order, at ANY step of the process, SAVES LIVES. Say no. Keep saying no. Stand your ground. Walk out. Tell your coworkers to walk out as well. Form a Union, a coalition, a group, take action together, call a reliable lawyer. These things are being done by individuals who are 'just following orders,' who will never recognize how complicit they are with extreme, abhorrent injustice.
