I loved their friendship, and how Hermione could bond with someone who shared similar interests and was also eager to know more about the world. The worldbuilding is also a plus! That said, on this blog we boycott Rowling, so this fic rec is for a fic with a lovely sapphic relationship only <3 please do not engage with or buy official Harry Potter media #transrights]

Something I have seen a lot in LM fanfic is a reluctance to evoke political ideas because the author doesn’t feel comfortable enough to do so, maybe because of a lack of knowledge of 1830s French politics. which is extremely understandable. I think you have to be a little mad to expect people to have an extensive knowledge of these things.

A lot of the members of Les Amis de l’ABC do resemble by their ideas and political opinions the “petits romantiques” or Jeunes France (young, less known romantics who belonged to a new generation of romantics born c. 1810, mostly republican, much more antisystem and anti-conformism than the older generations). They opposed the bourgeois society they lived in for social reasons and the oppressive, conservative, politics and morals that were born from it. They denounced the penal code which is established on bourgeois principles (protection of property before the protection of individuals + protection of the rich over the poor, etc). They criticised religion (many were atheists). They criticised conservative mores and reclaimed the criticism that was made against them, exaggerating it as much as possible to scandalise the bourgeois. They criticised scientific “progress” founded on bourgeois principles that further harmed marginalised groups (like the development of psychiatry, phrenology, “societal hygiene”, etc)

While many did descend from a certain bourgeoisie as well (not specifically wealthy but still bourgeois, as opposed to noble, working class or peasant), and while some remained attached to liberalism and total freedom, some did also grow closer to socialism. Chiefly, Nerval, who influenced the character of Prouvaire.

What I’m saying is, that if you don’t know much about politics from the time, you can always fall back on a critique of capitalism. In fact I think capitalism is perhaps more important than the question of a republic or a monarchy. The bourgeois (read: liberal) monarchy of Louis-Philippe is like a two headed monster in that it is both ultra conservative and repressive and doesn’t offer much change from its ultra monarchist predecessors, AND it is also capitalist, and brings new kinds of problems to the society of the time. Capitalism was criticised by both republicans and certain monarchists (like Balzac) which sometimes led to some very strange ideas (like republicans reclaiming royalist discourse about the downfall and corruption of the monarchy….)

I’m not trying to say that the monarchy is not a problem, but the social question was extremely important, sometimes more important to the eyes of the working class, than the question of a republic. Limiting the political discourse to a debate on republicanism/monarchism devoid of the social question is fundamentally bourgeois. It makes me think of the republicans who idealised a conception of an imperialist bourgeois republic that would still be founded on liberalism, heavily fantasised and constructed on a series of ancient roman symbols. Which totally existed in France btw.In fact it’s the model that eventually triumphed at the end of the 19th century :)

Imagine knowing this little about history. The Hays code we’re so apparently keen to bring back included the following:

“Miscegenation” (interracial relationships) were not allowed.

Sex hygiene and venereal diseases were not appropriate subjects.

Homosexuality was not to be depicted.

Ridicule of the clergy was not allowed.

Religion could never be depicted in a mocking manner.

Words like “God,” “Lord,” “Jesus,” “Christ,” “hell,” and “damn” could not be used unless it was in connection with religious ceremonies.

But yeah let’s fucking bring back the Hays code because sex is evil. You fucking lemmings. The point is that the Hays code was a horrible, immoral piece of bullshit that was only there to enforce white supremacy and Christianity on screen, and the reason people compare you to them is because of this absolutely brain-numbing tomfoolery.

You. Look. It. Up. You look it up. YOU LOOK IT UP. You do what you should be doing every single time you see something you don’t understand. You fuckin look it up. You have libraries of information in your pocket. Look it up. You do not have an excuse for not opening another tab, typing in the thing, and hitting enter. Look it up.

And if you’re LGBTQIA, Bipoc, non-xtian, or a woman in the US, and you spend any time looking up your history, you will see the Hays Code. It’s not just a silly old rule that we can laugh at now. It’s the framework we’re trying to dismantle. You need to know this. You should’ve been taught by your parents and teachers, but if you weren’t, you have to pick up the slack and do the research yourself. That sucks and I’m sorry, but it’s an unavoidable part of life.

See, this is that critical thinking stuff that purity culture is so obsessed with. You cannot interpret a thing (like “sex scenes are only for horny lol” being juxtaposed with the Hays Code) if you don’t know

the meaning of the language (the definitions of “sex,” “story,” “passion,” etc), the topics referenced (the Hays Code, what sex scenes are),

the speakers (Lily Orchard is notoriously aggressive, bigoted, and authoritarian… the Hays Code was written by a priest, a trade paper editor, and some studio heads),

or the context (the first statement is part of a ridiculous list of “writing tips” that also includes such gems as [paraphrased] wlw only kissing at the end is abuse, high-stakes conflict is bad, and the good guy must kill the villain, and was written in 2020… while the Hays Code was written in 1930 as a way to self-censor bc they thought the govt might step in if anyone saw their media as “lowering the moral standards” of ppl with “succeptible minds,” aka women, children, the disabled, and poor ppl who needed to be spoon-fed images of the “correct standards of life”).

You really do need that info. You do. You need to go get it. Then you look at it. And you combine it with all of the other applicable info you have. (For example, if you have had sex, or consumed any media containing sex.) Then you think through the thing, while taking everything you know into account. You identify what it was supposed to mean, and decide what it means to you. Congratulations! You have done the critical thinking.

At least if you still agree that sex’s only purpose in literature is to give you a boner, and that it’s a good idea to put down sweeping policies to prevent that from happening, you’ll have some kind of thought process behind it. And you can start trying to reconcile that view with its historical and present effects on minorities and society as a whole.

And if you don’t know what those effects are, FUCKIN LOOK IT UP

Reminder that there is no progressive way to ban books or censor media. It is an inherently reactionary and conservative thing to do. Censorship always serves to enforce conservative values onto media. By definition censorship cannot impose radical or revolutionary values onto media because it requires systems of the status quo to enforce it. Censorship is inherently an enemy to progress and anyone calling for it is not an ally to any progressive movement.

I find many things that scream CHARLESS

1 lt is so lower, I mean, why Erik, a tall HANDSOME  man would like to have this things, is not just the BED, is everything, this home was made for have a person unable to reach high parts. Also there is a lot of things there placed for not tall people, like Charles on his weheelchair.

2 Can you see the chain? seems like is holding the bed. Would be helfull if tharles needed to go to bed with no help to give him more autonomy, same like the rest of the things inside the house.

Seems like Charles loves to don’t depend of anyone, as he has a car to drive by himself

3 the books THE BOOKS, we know that Charles and Erik loves reading, I’m sure that the books are a gift from charles to Erik. Imagine Charles looking for books to give Erik as a excuse to visit him lol. To judge the amount of books, Charles was there often :D

4 TEA, the tea is synonim of charles in the fics, so is pretty possible that Erik got used to the tea to offer his guests.

5 -6 Is it Aloe vera? the only thing that I can thing about it’s that Charles recommended to Erik wear the plant to help with the scars, as Erik was in troubles time to time to rescue mutants.

7 Seems like there are lights in both, in high places and lower places.. convenient.
