I actually had some unexpected free time today so I was able to create this a lot faster than I expected. 

It isn’t perfect, but following the initial post I assigned each timezone one sun deity, so travelers know who they might pray to while exploring the world.

This was a lot of fun to create and to research mythologies from across the world, and I think I learned a couple of things doing so!

I read one of these when I was a kid and LOVED it, but could never find another - it didn’t have very good saturation in small-town South Africa.

I’ve had a bit of a google and can’t find any statements contradicting that AMA.

"sharks are older than trees" is technically true, but TIL that sharks were a marginal group until the mid-Jurassic (the middle of the Dino Age, ~200-150 mya), and all modern shark orders first appear around this time.

Before then, a different group of cartilaginous fish called hybodonts were the big apex predators. How were they different than sharks? Mostly because they had "boney" dorsal spines made out of dentine and enamel. Like teeth are. Like where would that tech have gone, if they'd survived and kept evolving for 200 million more years?

TIL that sharks went thru a mysterious extinction event 19 million years ago, when 95% of populations and 70% of species disappeared. Sediment samples go from having 1 shark fossil for every 5 fish fossils, to 1 shark per 100 fish (does that mean that the ocean used to be like 16% shark??)

And there was no big climate change then, or extinctions of other groups! This research is pretty recent and no one has even an educated guess!

Two effects of this:

All of today's big ocean sharks (Great White, Tiger, Basking, etc.) all evolved from coastal sharks that survived this event. And,

Populations haven't recovered. Sharks as a group are still decimated, a shadow of their former selves for most of the last 200 million years.

From my country's factual website written by phd-ers and such:

"Continents(1) are the large contiguous areas of land on Earth. A continent(1) is not the same as a continent(2) which is both physically and culturally delimited, and includes islands."

(my language calls country(2) a different word, "verdensdel" = "world part/region", to avoid this confusion and discussion)

One strict definition defines a continent(1) "land surrounded by water", which gives us 4 continents: Afrika-Eurasia, Amerika, Antarktika, Australia.

Verdensdel (continent(2)) is described as: a continent is a main part of the earth's surface that is partly delimited physically-geographically and partly culturally. The Earth is divided into seven continents:(2) Asia, Afrika, Europa, Nord-Amerika, Sør-Amerika, Oseania, Antarktis.

So the 7 human continents are exactly what they have been for a while now. And both the continents Europe & Asia are a part of the earth's continent Afrika-Eurasia.

So when y'all say "europe and asia are on the same land they're 1 continent", you clearly dont understand that there's two definitions of the english word "contintent" but also you're wrong bc you forgot africa.
