It's bad enough that some stans have recently been attacking or being nasty to other people for expressing their views or trying to understand something (if you think someone's missing some type of perspective, don't be a dick about it. Comic history is LONG. Even stuff from the 2000s is two decades old now. Not everyone is gonna have read the same stuff because maybe they weren't introduced to the fandom that way).

Those that sent hate to that mod from the controversy blog was down right disgusting and cowardly. I can't imagine how heartbreaking it is for a fan (who also expressed they were disabled and of a similar background which is why they gravitated toward the character) to be targeted by people who literally love the same character because they decided the mod was wrong.The gatekeeping is unreal. Y'all attacking that anon on their own damn trauma was wrong. They were being honest and open about something because they saw it related to a character they liked. You don't own that character. You're interpretation isn't automatically the say all.

And turning around to blame (or, in the case being referred to above, accidentally blamed, as I think was clarified) poor characterization on another character suffering poor characterization is plain petty.

My controversial take?

You can separate vigilantism from family dynamics. If Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia can be great friends, the Wayne family can too (at least to some extent). You don't have to have the same morals to be a family. Hell, what real family shares the same exact views with each other? You can find the in betweens that make being family worth it.

Yes, this is inspired by all the posts I see about Cass hating Jason and Jason hating Cass. A short personal story:

I am a lot like Cass. Im no child assassin but I had an experience early in life that shaped how I feel about killing, murder and capital punishment. I can't stand the idea of that extreme. I believe in change. I feel that I have to. My sibling who I met later in life, shared a similar experience and does believe that certain people deserve death. They are unforgiving towards people who have repeatedly shown no change. It caused MASSIVE and I mean the type of drama you see on the soaps type of problems for us. To be fair, they (my sibling) didn't mind my views as much as I minded theirs (not that I would have ever admitted that back then).

But despite those problems and that huge moral divide, we shared a love for many things. Reading, singing, dancing. Even things we personally weren't interested in we knew a lot about or thought about because the other was interested in that thing. Despite that difference, we still grew on each other. I learned to love them as a choice.

We still definitely don't agree on that particular thing BUT we have both learned to separate that from other parts of our relationship. I think we both just got tired of it overtaking everything else we could've thought about each other.

(By the way, the Ruth and Antonin thing was something our older sibling said to us. I think thats kind of funny lol).

But yeah. Thats my two cents. Family is complicated as hell. You don't have to change your morals for anyone, even someone you care about BUT you can change how you act towards people with different morals and still respect them. I think when people make the Cass and Jason hating each other argument, it makes it seem like neither character is capable of respecting another's persons views. That's obviously false. Cass's Batgirl run showed that she is MORE THAN capable of respecting other people's beliefs about killing and capital punishment.That doesn't mean she won't try her best to prevent people from dying. But that does mean she knows and understands situations where her morals prevent other people from finding their catharsis. She can mourn and grieve those losses—she should be allowed that! And then she can move on knowing that she tried her best and that her beliefs do help people in different (but maybe similar) scenarios.

Thank you for sharing a part of yourself with us Anon! I think you really hit the nail on the head. Neither character has to change their morals! Its more about mutual respect than needing to be changed to fit a different ideology.

You invalidate OP's trauma, the trauma of their sibling and express the idea that people's differences can't coexist.

OP clearly said that their family had huge issues with this. They found mutual ground through their experience and is applying that to fictional characters based on their real experience.

What about this makes the OP's perspective limited and centrist? You're assuming that by this post alone you've completed the scope of OP's moral values?

Even if they are a Centrist, you're undermining what Centralism is. Centralism isn't about one or the other. Its about moderation. Its about looking a specific scenario and or concept and making a judgment call on that scenario or concept based on the information you have.

Its not "All these criminals don't deserve capital punishment" v.s. "All these criminals do deserve capital punishment" with "The solution is that we should kill half these criminals".

Its asking what those people have done to merit that price. Who are the victims? How are there lives impacted by this person?

Even Cass's Batgirl run exemplified this. I mean just look at #19 from the 2000 Batgirl run.

It is totally fine to be traumatized about something. However, you do not have the right to use that trauma as a justification for doing harm.

For instance, many TERFs are sexual assault survivors. They have trauma regarding men. However, instead of finding healthy ways to process the trauma and powerlessness that comes with that experience, they instead seek to harm and control trans women, who are totally unrelated to whatever assault they suffered. Their trauma is valid, but their reaction isn’t.

In the same way, Jason’s response to his trauma is harmful. He sees his death as a product of Batman’s methods, and reacts to that by murdering a lot of people. To quote, “You can’t stop crime, only control it”. The act of becoming a crime kingpin and slaughtering “criminals” is not a mere difference of opinion. Jason’s actions are wrong, and they cause irreparable harm. Tolerating him, and allowing him to continue his actions would also be wrong. The point of vigilantism is that the Bats cannot sit by and let terrible things happen. Co-existing with Jason is antithetical to this philosophy.

Oh, I agree that Jason's methodology is wrong. He is making it his decision to choose who lives and who dies. I think what made him such an interesting character back in UTRH is that he made a point of differentiating someone like Joker from other villains.

His idea is that some people aren't capable of change (which is of course, completely antithetical to Cassandra's idea that everybody can change). That being said, it doesn't mean that every criminal is deserving of death and I don't think Jason does kill every type of criminal (though in some more modern comics or during his villain run this isn't applicable). DC didn't really have a plan for him after UTRH, which didn't bode well for the moral compass they had yet to fully establish for him.

I think that Jason as a character should believe in change for some people but he doesn't believe in change for others. Joker, for example, isn't changing anytime soon.

Vigilantism itself is a crime. That crime itself doesn't warrant death. The principles of each and every Batman character (and comic characters moral principles in general) are a reflection of the USA law system. The characters each represent the moral expanse of that system.

The Batman comics highlight how criminals (like Joker) use the flaws in that system to continue to do what they do. I think it'd be sensible if Jason's character worked to change the system instead of "fuck it the system is garbage so Imma take matters into my own hands". The criminals he kills (such as rapists and dealers who deal to children) or the organizations he takes over (such as the drug trade) aren't unrelated to what he experienced as a child/teenager.

In a way, for him, Jason's death also reflects what happened with Felipe Garzonas. I'm not gonna get into "did he do it or did he not do it" cause I don't think that really changes how Jason saw that incident:

Gloria commits suicide because Garzonas uses the flaws in the system to his advantage. He, for all intents and purposes, gets away with his crime (and is thus, free to commit such a crime again). The GCPD and Batman say that there's nothing to be done about that situation because of Garzonas's pardon.

For Jason, he saw Garzonas as the direct reason Gloria dies. That's why he isn't remorseful when Garzonas dies (once again whether he fell or was pushed doesn't really change that feeling). In that way, Jason's belief of necessary evil is that if these "criminals" die that protects innocents.

Obviously, that is an extreme conclusion but it is what he comes as to as a result of his trauma.

I think people's feelings about his ideology depend on their own circumstances and their own experiences on the justice system. The truth is a lot of people who deserve punishment get away with the crimes they've committed.

I mean, look at all the police officers who get away with committing crimes against innocent people just because they are followers of the so-called law. It took an agonizing amount of protest from around the whole damn world for the officer who killed George Flyod to be properly charged for his crime. And the first time around he was able to be bailed out!

The officers who killed Breonna Taylor never faced serious consequences. Myles Cosgrove, who fired the killing shot was merely fired. That was basically the worst of his consequences for killing an innocent woman in her own damn home.

In a better system, people like those officers would face proper punishment without public outcry. We don't have that system and our current system is reflected in these comics.

Jason's methods DEFINITELY aren't right. His actions are a result of his trauma AND a result of the legal system.

Not every criminal gets what they deserve and there are different ways Vigilantes have developed to combat that. No method is actually as effective as they hope for it to be. That's why different people use different methods. Sometimes one method works, sometimes the same method doesn't.

It doesn't mean your method is flawed or that your method is the right method. It means that in some instances it works while in some it doesn't work. Some are more "morally correct" and some are more morally ambiguous or "morally incorrect".

You don't agree with someone's methodology (even if it works in some instance) when it goes against your own. But, you an acknowledge that it provided justice (in whatever way one chooses to define justice) to a certain degree. You can respect how someone's trauma has made them believe a certain thing. You don't have to be violent or aggressive in response. You can present your own ideology. You can hear what another has to say. If they change? Okay. If they don't? At least you can say you tried. Now, move on. Keep doing what you do because what you do matters. What you do helps.
