The Mighty Nein are becoming real friends (1x06)
The Mighty Nein | 1x06
Witchy Lucien
Here's the first part of the new comic! I haven't come up with a title yet, but feel free to suggest your own in the comments.
Don't mind me, just enjoying my crumbs...
Mollymauk trying (and failing) to be Lucien compilation
Bonus:
Nobody is going to be able to talk to me for a week
And last, but not least ---- the only straight thing about me, my nose ( I'd like to thank my mother and father for at least giving me that )
And yes, I have not forgotten this is a writing blog, hah. the damn tiefling is just on my mind 25/7, and life is a b*tch
Mollymauk: yours truly (Nihtfrowan @ IG) Photographer: samael.night (IG)
Thinking about how Kingsley and Caleb have matching black and red leather gloves and vivid blood red accents…okay—
trying to analyze what I can from the Darktow poster, so here we go:
That flag!! I just love it so much. I imagine it must be Kingsley's flag for The Mollymauk. The twisted handle on the right feels like it resembles Kingsley's own blade a bit, the Fang of the Spire King, and it looks like it's crossed with one of Molly or Lucien's old scimitars.
The eye being crossed out feels very playful, like Kingsley is more or less "playing pirate" and this is just another costume. But it also feels notable because Molly and Lucien have both lost so much to the Eyes of Nine. It feels like Kingsley striking one of the eye sockets out is his way of saying he won't be controlled by anyone anymore.
And I mean, I also can't get over the fact that it's his own skull, a memorial for a past life, but one he still carries the weight of in his present--
"Revelry before death. Cruelty before surrender." I wonder if that's just a motto of the Revelry's, or if it's unique to Wyatt or Kingsley in particular...? (though, given Kingsley's desire to learn from Molly's past and change for the better--trying to, "be a good person, or whatever I think that means," I don't think the notion of always resorting to cruelty fits King.)
There's three blades in all in the poster. Not sure if the one stabbed through the map is supposed to be any weapon in particular, but in tarot, The Three of Swords is very much a sign of betrayal--
(I assume the map itself is of Darktow, but I can't recognize any landmarks in it.)
Now, the coins!! I love how all of the Mighty Nein are included, it's such a neat touch. My only concern is that, while other coins are set in pairs or at least grouped together, Kingsley's feels very much on its own. Cut off from everyone else, alone. Does he feel lonely these days? When the rest of the Nein all have family or partners, a place they can always call home--does Kingsley have anything like that? Is he finally ready to truly open up to the Nein, or still closing himself off? Is any of that self-isolation healthy? Can he carry the mantle of Plank King all alone?
What does it mean, that Kingsley finally breaks and is able to ask the Mighty Nein for help? Did he think he could pull it all off on his own? Is that a matter of pride, of trying to prove himself? Does he feel like he has to do it all on his own, to show that he's done something "worthwhile" with the life he was given? Or was he just terrified of getting too close to the Nein, of what old aches and lingering feelings it would stir up--? I hope that, this time...Kingsley will be able to fully trust the Nein. To finally let his walls down--
There's also the implication that Caduceus and Essek will at least be present or play a role, since their coins are included in the design. Of course I really hope that Taliesin will play Kingsley for the vast majority of the game, and I still think that holds true, considering he's the focus.
Essek feels like an unexpected surprise though! I wonder how he'll be included...? If we'll get to finally see him and Kingsley interact in scenes? (or is it just that all the Nein are included because they're all important to Kingley and his journey?) And I wonder if this liveshow will directly follow Projekt Funball--?
EDIT: and this is just me trying to interpret things as best I can, please feel free to let me know if there's any other potential symbolism or other neat interpretations I might've missed :)
happy darktow to all who celebrate,, hoping for some lovely circus man and magic man moments—
Kingsley working at the Lavish Chateau while in hiding is something I just can't get over, so please consider--
au where Kingsley is able to get word out by Sending Stone and the Nein arrive much sooner. He still looks like he was just dredged up from the bottom of the deep--half-drowned and still chilled to the bone from hours of treading water.
He steals that change of clothes from the costume closet, but he's still pale and shaking, hands trembling as he cradled a cup of tea for warmth--kindly provided by Marion, along with a glass of whiskey he was far more eager for. She's happy to take him in, to make sure her daughter knows he's safe--even offers him a job, which he gratefully accepts.
He hasn't taken care of any clients yet when the Nein arrive, still restless and just getting his bearings. The soft silk robe and glimmering crystal accents, the parade of color and gaudy sequins, jangling horn charms of gold, strung with little baubles and trinkets--none of it quite fits, and he's showing far too much skin for comfort. All of Molly and Lucien's scars laid bare, vibrant tattoos painted over ashen lavender. Makes him wince whenever he catches sight of his reflection in the mirror--
Caleb Widogast gives him a long, searching look. Takes in the ragged sight of him; the dark shiner at his eye and split lip when he grins, the way he still tenses with every flare of pain, favors one leg--
They agree to launch their attack on the morrow. Better to let him rest and heal before throwing him back into the Revelry's jaws, to give themselves time to think and plan. He expects to fall dead asleep on his feet, to wake screaming and sweat-soaked from the same haunting night terrors of Lucien's reign.
But then Caleb gently takes him aside, and softly asks if he would be amenable to some company for tonight.
He's far too weak to say anything but a breathless, heartfelt yes. He hopes Widogast kisses him senseless then, shoves him up against the wall and has his way with him. And yet--
Here's Caleb, drawing him a hot bath and combing tender hands through tangled dark curls. Massaging rich oils, lavender scented and soothing, down the corded tension of his spine. Applying healing salve to every red raw, festering scar. Reveling in the way he slowly unwinds, basking and luxuriating in every fleeting touch.
Kingsley hisses at the rush of steam and scalding water, tries not to flinch when Caleb meticulously cleans his cuts, gingerly binds every wound.
"You really wanna waste your money on this?" he rasps, hates how his throat still feels strangled and hoarse.
"Ja. Do not look so surprised. This is for me too, Kingsley."
Brushes the hair back from the nape of his neck, presses the softest kisses to each and every aching scar. His Magician whipsers sweet nothings in the shell of his ear, cradles him tenderly in his arms all through the night. As though they are lovers, partners, as though Kingsley Tealeaf is someone real and whole, with a beating heart and kindling soul all his own--
(also, and this is always played for laughs, but--Taliesin made some comments in the live show about how Kingsley is very into bondage, and seems to enjoy being submissive. But after his torture and execution, I don't know if he'd feel quite the same about being in a scene...if the things that once gave him pleasure and felt safe enough to indulge in are now reminders of that trauma. I can't imagine that feels the same after being whipped for treason and drowned in chains, and it just makes my heart ache--)
some more ridiculous and silly and cute King and Caleb moments from Darktow—
The Mighty Nein initially having misgivings about helping Kingsley take Darktow, uncertain if he has ulterior motives, if he’s just in it for himself or genuinely is scared for Jester’s family and the rest of Nicodronas (he is—he tries to put on a brave front, but the fear is very real—)
Caleb saying, “This is outside my jurisdiction, but—if you are on the level…” agreeing to help as soon as he realizes how much Kingsley genuinely cares. And when Kingsley chimes in with, “You’ll have my gratitude, and more than that, I’ll owe you a favor. And a favor owed by the Plank King is certainly better than—” Caleb cuts him off with, “You’re laying it on a little thick, Pirate Man.” But oh, I wonder what he’d want to do for Caleb, if he has something in mind already. Love their silly adorable banter—
When the Nein first saw him, Caleb also incredulously asked, “Are you dead?” Because he was tortured and nearly drowned and still looks like he’s been through hell. To which Kingsley answers that, “on paper, yes—”
Kingsley: “Where is Caleb?”
Caleb: [Orca noises]
Kingsley then throws a candelabra at orca Caleb to try and turn him back, which harmlessly bounces off of him and does nothing—
Caleb fireballing Kingsley’s ship (named The Last Laugh, which I adore—) even though King deliberately asked him to set fire to every ship in the harbor as a distraction but his. Caleb seems to enjoy this—
Caleb saying to let the mages get away after they attack with four rounds of Fireball, “Trust me.” Kingsley exasperatedly going, “Are you sure?? There’s been a Lot of fireballs.” And relenting when Caleb just insists, “Trust me.”
Caleb tries to cast Meteor Swarm by manifesting a portal to the Astral Sea, with the ruins of the Cognoza Ward raining down on the Plank King—there’s just a glimpse into this other Plane, just a fleeting moment before it’s unfortunately counterspelled but…god…what did Kingsley think, seeing a flash of the city for just a moment. If the spell had continued, would Matt make King roll a Wisdom save to see if he’d be able to stay calm? Would Taliesin have had Kingsley incredibly unnerved or terrified. And just…what a choice for Liam to make in that moment. The fact that he’s drawing from this thing that caused Tealeaf so much pain, turning it against his enemies instead—
Caleb knowing how upset Kingsley is about losing the ship he fought so hard for, and later taking him aside to ask first, “Listen to me, how attached are you to the throne?” And when Kingsley gives him the go ahead that, “Oh please, it’s hideous,” Caleb promises that even if he has to burn it to the ground, they can always rebuild something new. That they can, “Make it home.”
Caleb using Dominate Person to take control of the Dragon Turtle and ride it into battle, and Kingsley just going, “oh, I’ve always liked turtles—”
Jester and Kingsley spoiler that warms my heart:
