#prev #i think the scene in writing and concept is fine but i found the execution pretty awful because the way it’s shot #and edited spot lights jasper's interiority over alicent's. but to add on to your analysis i think the scene is trying to underscore #alicent’s vulnerability as a woman who married into the dynasty who is not herself a targaryen dragon rider #and who’s claim to power is not by virtue of her own blood but her husband’s and her children’s.#it’s notable to me that we get these almost back to back scenes where jasper and daemon frame alicent and mysaria’s #political success and agency as infiltration in the same episode that daemon is like get that hightower shit out of here this is ‘OUR home’#jasper calls alicent an “industrious little creature” and daemon calls mysaria a “slipper[y]”“eel.” they’re viewed as having encroached #upon a sphere they do not belong in “i remember you snaking your way into the halls of power when you were just a girl”’ vs #“i left you here a prisoner…you’ve wriggled your way toward the crown like an eel.” i think the show is imploring us to think about how #women who exist outside the targaryen blood line are understood as political agents. how they are doubly othered and seen as external to the #“natural” political order. the show has actually been doing this for quite some time.#in 1x02 when viserys announces that he’s going to marry alicent and corlys jumps up and says “this is an absurdity. my house is valyrian the #greatest power in the realm. .” he’s literally like this person is implicitly a bad match because she is not valyrian you #are an idiot for passing up on marrying my daughter which would reinforce the power you and i both derive from the spectre of old valyria #when daemon says he’s going to marry mysaria otto says “this is an abomination. with every breath #you soil your name your house and your brother’s name.’ otto’s emphasis is on class and respectability but i think #the similar phrasing is meant to highlight otto’s hypocrisy. and how you know. the whole point is that these men s #selectively invoke the language of honor and blood when it serves their interests.#<- obviously it’s all more complicated than i’ve been able to articulate here but hopefully this makes some sense #some sense i had these quotes on hand in my notes app and wrote this all in one go #hotd

what did you think about the scene between alicent and jaspar wylde in this episode?

I understand why many people found it upsetting because it was upsetting and I think they could’ve handled it a little more deliberately than just having this guy show up at her room. What I understand less is the amount of people who seem to be shocked or surprised that the show that has been about institutional and interpersonal sexual violence and its effect on the women who attempt to be power players within said evil patriarchal system would do this. I won’t defend it as 100% loadbearingly necessary for the plot but that’s the theme that they keep doing.

god it’s just like. otto was the reason everything between rhaenyra and alicent went sour. he was responsible for betrothing alicent to viserys, he continued to drive the wedge between them their entire adulthood, told alicent she’d have to choose between rhaenyra and her children, planted that seed of resentment and distrust that festered and twisted and decomposed until the love they still have for each other was almost snuffed out completely. and then rhaenyra kills him, and it’s the first person she’s ever killed, a man she’s known all her life and who at one time might have even held some affection for. she kills him and he is alicent’s father as well as the man responsible for taking alicent from her. and then she takes her throne, leaving behind a trail of his blood and locks eyes with alicent over her father’s body. this is the best show in the world

Whenever they gave us one of those "read through ALL the instructions before you begin!" trick assignments in school where the steps lead you on an increasingly ridiculous goose chase until the final one tells you to just put your name on the paper and turn it in without doing anything else, I was always like, "Okay, but what's the point? specifically what i’m thinking about here, though idk if clarification is needed, is that when you don’t tell me you’re uncomfortable you’re putting me in the position of harming you without giving me the option not to. if you never say “i don’t want this” then i don’t get to say “no problem, we don’t have to!” and you’ll grow to resent and hate me for crossing a boundary that was never communicated to me. actually, this applies to things other than sex too. if you never voice displeasure/discomfort, or direct desire, you’re making it impossible for people to respect you and give you what you want and keep you feeling safe.

good tags. but i want to respond directly to one thing here bc in a lot of ways it’s the crux of what im talking about. “do not let them find out later that you weren’t actually consenting.” the thing about this is that, if you verbally consent, even if you don’t mean it, you DID consent. your partner cannot read your mind. they cannot anticipate that you weren’t actually feeling it. you don’t then get to turn around and go “oh this person assaulted me because i didn’t actually consent” when you said yes and responded positively to every check in. that person did nothing wrong, you failed to communicate. when someone needs to set a boundary and doesn’t, they’re causing the harm in that situation. their failure to communicate is what is putting them in an unsafe situation.

He would probably have Jon Arryn die as the result of a completely unrelated thing that everyone forgets about immediately and have his last words be misconstrued to cause more unnecessary conflict or have Cersei lose control over her children so one of them flies off the handle and kills Ned. Or have Jaime wander around purposeless until a freaky weirwood dream in Harrenhal makes him change course. Or put in some dumbass plot about how your hair color determines the legitimacy of your parentage even though that’s hypocritical. Or have people say that Sansa grew bat wings and turned into a wolf to kill Joffrey but really just have her be a scared teenage girl who wanted to leave her horrible situation. Or deny characters catharsis through violent revenge because War Bad. Or have dany talk about how she’s just a little girl uneducated in the ways of war in front of men even though that’s sexist and have her dragons eat people or carry her off somewhere because she can’t really control them. Or get too into Cersei’s desperate struggle against her own body because of misogyny. Or have Robb give up his sisters as hostages in favor of keeping Jaime Lannister to make a point about how girls are less valuable. Or have Catelyn get randomly lucky enough to run into Tyrion Lannister in one inn in the entire kingdom and kidnap him on a complete misconception that he tried to kill her son but it was actually like…Joffrey, because he wants to be like his dad or something. Or have stannis start a civil war to usurp the throne over a misinterpretation of a prophecy. Or get way too into peace being a brave option and not a cowardly one.
