I don't object in principle to putting a scary monster in your Backrooms-type media, but I feel strongly that you've entirely missed the point of the genre if at any point you actually show us the monster.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Putting a monster in the backrooms is kind of going against the point. The original intent of the backrooms is that it's a place inhospitable to human life despite looking like it could theoretically support it. Starving to death in a well-lit air conditioned room etc etc. That's the original scary part IMO. Putting a monster in the Backrooms makes it about as scary as being trapped in a basement with a Siberian tiger. Still threatening, but it's not scary in nearly the same way. If you gotta have a monster, I think the horror should come from the speculative nature of what kind of fucked up creature would be adapted to living in such a weird labyrinthine desert.

What I'm saying is if you don't have carpet antlions and wallpaper trapdoor spiders and shit what's even the point?

It feels like I’ve talked about this before, but to me the funniest version of Portal is if Chell is deaf.

Like, most of the major story beats, at least the ones that directly affect her, have a prominent visual component so she’s following along with the basics. But she has no idea who cave johnson is, or what wheatley was trying to explain to her, and she certainly wasn’t hurt by any of glados’ insults.

but the best part of this headcanon is imagining glados checking chell’s personnel file years down the line, noticing the word “deaf” for the first time, and just going “WHAT???”
