I think most if not all American plug sockets don’t have a switch for the socket and I do not like it. Just put a switch there. Americans see a potential fire hazard and clap

Not the asker, but it’s correct that American plug sockets (🇺🇸= electrical outlets) do not have individual turnoff switches.

It’s worth pointing out that American domestic electricity comes out of the hole at 110/120V, while the UK is on 220-240V. There are half as many zaps in the basic American outlet.

The zappiness translates to UK electric kettles boiling in half the time as American kettles, which is understandable when they have twice as many zaps going through the water. American bathrooms have outlets in them, and you’ll see Americans drying their hair with electric dryers in the bathroom mirror. Americans do not have a European fear of housing zaps near water because, in addition to having domesticated kitchen zaps, American zaps are far less likely kill you if you get water near them.

The decision to have the USA on 110/120V did include safety reasons relating to “actual electrocution,” as everything from an accidental fork jammed in an outlet to an exploding 110v appliance is much less high-risk when it’s half as many zaps. Admittedly, there’s evidence that 240V is safer for fire safety as it lets the zaps have more room to run about and play, while the 120V zaps, being cooped up, can become resentful and gnaw on their wiring.

Motors do better with proper large healthy muscular zaps, so American large appliances that run on 240v have dedicated outlets and wiring.

(If you are currently itching to correct me on the behaviour of zaps, I’m not interested)

I will add that outlets near water (bathrooms, kitchen counters, etc) are slightly different from regular outlets and have an internal GFCI breaker that shuts off power if water inside the outlet is detected, so the zaps are prevented from running out of things like hairdryers

By contrast, UK and European electricians have taken very firmly against the idea of having electrical outlets in bathrooms at all. Well, the rule is something like “not in the same room within 2.5/3m (almost 10ft) of a bath or shower,” but in practice, given the general laws of physics and layout of European bathrooms, this means that there are no accessible power sources in bathrooms at all, barring the little ones occasionally supplied for electric shavers (these special sockets being a sort of quarantine area that keeps a small number of zaps away from the main hive.)

So electric hair drying in the UK and Europe is usually performed, rather strangely, in the bedroom.

My brother randomly told me something that really made me think.

About what "Protect the youth" has become. Idk what it was like in other countries and I know that it very likely could have been stricter than it was in my country back then. But generally:

He was like "When I was 16, there were two kinds of adult content: Horror movies and explicitly depicted sexual content. The first made me have nightmares, the latter (as in what you could get in video rental stores) generally wasn't of much interest to me because it wasn't something I, as a 16 year old, could relate to. So whenever I saw an "18+" label somewhere, I just completely ignored that content because I knew it wouldn't be interesting at all to me.

But NOW, what's declared 18+ is even an excessive amount of swear words in streams! NOW, when I see an "18+" label, I don't know if it's horror movies that'll give some 16 year olds nightmares, if it's completely unrelatable porn, OR if it's educational sex ed, a 20 year old talking about their really healthy relationship with their partner (that includes intimacy), education about consent in BDSM (which affects 16 year olds as well, there's no age limit to curiosity), a live stream of wholesome musicians who happen to drink a couple of beers during kind of therapeutic talks, or simply people who aren't puritans and say "fuck" a lot! An 18+ label isn't worth anything anymore!"

And yeah... That's just it.

People who talk about body changes during their (first!) puberty are even labelled adult content. Even though puberty very much happens BEFORE adulthood. It's helpful content for minors. And it's labelled "adult" to "protect the youth".

Nothing means anything anymore.

truly the wildest thing about all the Bridgerton discourse about "is Nicola Coughlan too FAT to be a convincing love interest???" is that in many ways she actually looks better in the period costumes than her thinner counterparts because she has the figure to really fill them out. those dresses are incredibly flattering on larger bodies because they emphasise the bust and cleavage whilst creating a very elegant silhouette. there's something unintentionally hilarious about hearing pearl-clutching in the distance over "idk is this FAT WOMAN sexy enough to be believable as an object of lust??" whilst Penelope Featherington's majestic heaving bosoms are almost spilling out of her dress in a category 5 titty event. if anything she's too sexy. they had to spend the first two seasons putting her in ugly dresses in a desperate attempt to conceal the fact that she's serving more cunt than the entire itty bitty titty committee combined
