I do think that there's something to be said about how "nerd culture" in general, and comics in particular, got sort of gentrified as they became big business and therefore mainstream culture. Like there was a wildness to them back when they were disposable shit for kids and weirdos that I feel has been kind of lost.
Anyway the best thing you can do is support indies. Indie comics; indie games; indie films; indie science fiction and fantasy novels, like, oh, incidentally, my own novel set in post-apocalyptic fairy-occupied Canada.
airpods are literally such a massive downgrade like remember when headphones cost £2 didn’t need charging didn’t randomly disconnect and didn’t get lost all the time. remember when tech kinda worked for kinda cheap
remember when phones just fucking had headphone jacks
yeah yeah rainbow capitalism is bad and whatever but like. when I was a child, being pro gay was not the popular or lucrative choice. I'm happy that times have changed.
I miss rainbow capitalism. I do. I miss when it felt like public opinion was still pro gay. I understand it was always an empty gesture, but it mattered in a sense of knowing how socially acceptable being queer is. If that makes sense.

Big Business: Work as our slave, it will be great for your resume =)
Big Business: We don't count that as experience.
gamers are mad a new game has a female main character and are calling her impossibly unrelatable and ugly? wow a first time for everything
The most basic, intractable fact about mental illnesses is that you simply cannot willpower your way out of them. The only exceptions to this rule are the ones I have, which continue to disable me due to lack of determination and other grave personal flaws

Me: *idly reading Anthropic's latest bullshit claims about how they're speeding up their own coding of AI with AI*
Anthropic: Our employees are writing 8x more lines of code per person per quarter.
Me: Uhuh.
Anthropic: Which we acknowledge has nothing to do with usefulness of the code and isn't a good metric.
Me: Sure ain't.
Anthropic: "Nonetheless, this represents an acceleration." (literally all they said to counter their admission lines of code is a useless metric)
Me: Sure buddy.
Anthropic: But but but! Our employees also self reported being more 4x productive!
Me: *raises eyebrow*
Anthropic: Of course we acknowledge the evidence put out by METR that coders using LLM assistance falsely overestimate their coding speedup-
Me: Overestimate. Interesting way to describe programmers actually solving problems slower when using LLMs despite thinking they were going faster. Can't help but notice that's the one report you mentioned that you didn't link too.
We conduct a randomized controlled trial to understand how early-2025 AI tools affect the productivity of experienced open-source developers
Anthropic: - in a self-reported non-anonymous opt-in slack survey of employees on their work performance regarding a metric intended for shareholder reports with no options but increased productivity or no increase.
Me: *jaw slowly falls open*
Me: .......
Me: *internally adjusts my understanding of how bad scientific malpractice can be*
Me: .......
Me: I literally cannot imagine being brave enough to author this and put it out into the world where future employers might find it.
Me: ..... *thinks about it* .....
Me: That's not just a turn of phrase, I literally can't imagine that. Wow.
Our progress toward recursive self-improvement, and its implications.
Important rules for the "age verification" era of the internet that we're living in:
1. Do not do age verification.
2. If you have to do age verification, cheat. Do not under any circumstances give them your real ID.
The tool presents users with a 3D model they can then manipulate to, the creator says, bypass Discord's age verification system.
Oh no I dropped my link, what a horrible thing! Sure hope this doesn't get reblogged until it reaches users from the UK and Brazil!
And remember to not make a second account just to test out what works best when verifying your identity
A reminder that we still dont support Age Verification bullshit.

Honestly, Tvyek is pretty miraculous. It’s permeable to water vapor but not to water, it’s nearly impossible to tear, but can be easily cut. It’s cheap and made entirely without binding chemicals. In addition to being used for wristbands, it’s used to wrap construction sites to keep out water during construction, for tear-resistant envelopes at Fed-Ex, coveralls for mechanics, and my wallet, actually.
Fun tip, though it looks like paper, Tyvek is plastic, and cannot be recycled with paper.
holy fuc
