HAPPY FAGTOBER EVERYBODY
something something suguboo 👅
end of beginning
I was today years old when I learned that when you type "otp: true" in AO3 search results it filters out fics with additional ships, leaving only the fics where your otp is the main ship
Gamechanger
Here’s a cheatsheet of all the available hidden search functions. “-creators:[whatever]” is another exclusion that can be particularly useful.

helen “trans people are perpetuating gender steriotypes” joyce is now upset that the scientific american is writing about how women were hunters too back in the day, not just mothers and caretakers. feminist win!
I think I found the article!
The influential idea that in the past men were hunters and women were not isn’t supported by the available evidence
Read it if you have the time, it's very interesting.
Reading the article I see why TERFs are mad about it; it explicitly makes the distinction between gender as a social entity and sex as a biological category, and defines biological sex having multiple factors, both of which are anathema to TERF philosophy.
It also includes these fascinating paragraphs about the role of estrogen in different types of physical activity, directly debunking the widespread notion that estrogen is the weak human's hormone and only does weak human things:
Given the fitness world's persistent touting of the hormone testosterone for athletic success, you'd be forgiven for not knowing that estrogen, which females typically produce more of than males, plays an incredibly important role in athletic performance… The estrogen receptor—the protein that estrogen binds to in order to do its work—is deeply ancient. Joseph Thornton of the University of Chicago and his colleagues have estimated that it is around 1.2 billion to 600 million years old—roughly twice as old as the testosterone receptor. In addition to helping regulate the reproductive system, estrogen influences fine-motor control and memory, enhances the growth and development of neurons, and helps to prevent hardening of the arteries. Important for the purposes of this discussion, estrogen also improves fat metabolism. During exercise, estrogen seems to encourage the body to use stored fat for energy before stored carbohydrates. Fat contains more calories per gram than carbohydrates do, so it burns more slowly, which can delay fatigue during endurance activity. Not only does estrogen encourage fat burning, but it also promotes greater fat storage within muscles… which makes that fat's energy more readily available. Adiponectin, another hormone that is typically present in higher amounts in females than in males, further enhances fat metabolism while sparing carbohydrates for future use, and it protects muscle from breakdown. Anne Friedlander of Stanford University and her colleagues found that females use as much as 70 percent more fat for energy during exercise than males. Estrogen's ability to increase fat metabolism and regulate the body's response to the hormone insulin can help prevent muscle breakdown during intense exercise. Furthermore, estrogen appears to have a stabilizing effect on cell membranes that might otherwise rupture from acute stress brought on by heat and exercise. Ruptured cells release enzymes called creatine kinases, which can damage tissues… Linda Lamont of the University of Rhode Island and her colleagues, as well as Michael Riddell of York University in Canada and his colleagues, found that females experienced less muscle breakdown than males after the same bouts of exercise. Tellingly, in a separate study, Mazen J. Hamadeh of York University and his colleagues found that males supplemented with estrogen suffered less muscle breakdown during cycling than those who didn't receive estrogen supplements.
The article also talks about sexual dimorphism in different species, concluding that "Modern humans have low sexual dimorphism compared with the other great apes," and that overemphasis on averages obscures the wide dispersal of individual traits, which is what I keep saying.
Anthropologists also look at damage on our ancestors' skeletons for clues to their behavior. Neandertals are the best-studied extinct members of the human family because we have a rich fossil record of their remains. Neandertal females and males do not differ in their trauma patterns, nor do they exhibit sex differences in pathology from repetitive actions. Their skeletons show the same patterns of wear and tear. This finding suggests that they were doing the same things, from ambush-hunting large game animals to processing hides for leather. Yes, Neandertal women were spearing woolly rhinoceroses, and Neandertal men were making clothing.
I also thought this part was cool :)
PLEASE read this article, this information is incredible for everyone looking to unlearn bioessentialism

When I was a kid I was genuinely horrified by the idea of growing up and I think a large part of it was the insistence by adults in my life that puberty would turn me into someone completely different. They were like “sure you don’t like make up and boys now but you’ll feel differently after puberty” or like “sure you think you wouldn’t want kids now but you’ll see once you’re older”
it’s like damn, stop invalidating kids’ personalities and listen to them and maybe you won’t be so shocked when they don’t transform into a new person later
My wife and I don’t ever plan on having kids, but my Dad always had one piece of parenting advice I’ll never forget.
He said “Pay attention to who your children are when they’re little. If you do that, you’ll never be surprised at who they become. The only people who think kids suddenly become other people when they hit adolescence are the ones who never listened to what their kids were telling them the whole time.”

Been hearing a lot about “reparations” lately? Well, this is one way to start working towards that, since those in power certainly won’t.
always remember that love will always come back to u. in a different form, different person, different hobby, different touch. but in any way, love will always come back.
“Franz Kafka, the story goes, encountered a little girl in the park where he went walking daily. She was crying. She had lost her doll and was desolate.
Kafka offered to help her look for the doll and arranged to meet her the next day at the same spot. Unable to find the doll he composed a letter from the doll and read it to her when they met.
“Please do not mourn me, I have gone on a trip to see the world. I will write you of my adventures.” This was the beginning of many letters. When he and the little girl met he read her from these carefully composed letters the imagined adventures of the beloved doll. The little girl was comforted.
When the meetings came to an end Kafka presented her with a doll. She obviously looked different from the original doll. An attached letter explained: “my travels have changed me… “
Many years later, the now grown girl found a letter stuffed into an unnoticed crevice in the cherished replacement doll. In summary it said: “every thing that you love, you will eventually lose, but in the end, love will return in a different form.”
-May Benatar, The Pervasiveness of Loss
a lot of ppl in the notes of the previous post are mentioning museums hoarding stolen cultural objects which is important beyond measure but museums shutting down due to lack of funding will not result in repatriation of cultural materials, they would most likely be auctioned off to private ultra-wealthy collectors to recoup some of their debt and we'd never find these objects again let alone be able to repatriate them. i understand the desire to say 'fuck museums let them die' for this reason but it won't have the result you think it will, and it will also mean that all of their ethically sourced and donated materials (which for most museums are the vast majority of their collections) will no longer be cared for by experts but again, sold off to private collectors who can do whatever they want with them or deteriorate in storehouses indefinitely. this would be catastrophic for public history and collective knowledge-sharing across the globe across cultures, and museums in post-colonial and run by/for racialized or otherwise oppressed ethnic groups will fall first because they receive FAR less funding than the large western institutions. just repeating phrases and sentiments you've seen online as a form of performative activism without knowing anything about what you're talking about does more harm than good and doesn't make you look smart or clever just foolish it's so deeply annoying and frustrating
i don't know why all of you seem to think the only museums that exist are the massive western imperial institutions that have historically dealt with stolen artefacts, the majority of museums are Not these large institutions and there are museums across the globe in every country that require funding to preserve That Country's Own Material History. stop acting like you know everything because you read a twitter thread about it oh my fucking god
From now on im tellin jobs I was General manager at Toys R Us. Who tf they gone call
That’s actually a wise move that many people do practice. Don’t have enough job experience, but need it to get the job? Put yourself down as having had experience in a position in a company that is no longer in business, especially if it closed years ago. They literally have no way of verifying this (do not do this for chains wherein only the store closed, but not the chain). It’s a good way to fluff up your resume, just make sure you put down a position wherein you used skills you already have.
For instance, you can say you were a Personal Assistant – typing, data entry, responding to emails, taking phone calls.
Or you were an entry level cashier/customer service worker. Retraining is simple at that point.
Need brief training on that, so that you can say you literally were trained?

Seriously, Alison is amazing. Most courses are only around an hour or so long, and you can say you have some knowledge or some experience in these things… because you do.
I’ve been using Alison and it’s really rad! super recommend it
I have no idea what op’s intention here is, but I need to emphasize that sex work isn’t easy because it’s a literal job that requires specific skills, connections, and safety measures. This isn’t a matter of “oh, prostitution is evil and will destroy you!!!” but just pointing out that social perceptions of sex work are incredibly unrealistic. Too many people think that it’s easy, that all they have to do is sell some pics and they’ll immediately get a sugar daddy and be rolling in cash.
Most “sugar daddies” and other people who take on providing roles like that aren’t legit and either don’t have the cash to back up their claims or they’re looking to take advantage of someone who doesn’t know what red flags to look out for.
Stripping is physically exhausting and requires a lot of athletic skill. Money can also be inconsistent, and it can be difficult to find a place that is trustworthy and works to take of the dancers.
Cam-work takes a lot of , well, work. Equipment is not only expensive, it’s also necessary to get a decent start. It can take years to build up a regular fan base and even longer to make any decent money off of it. It’s also very difficult to find sites to host your streams.
Selling your own porn, whether it’s pics or videos, is a very inconsistent source of income, especially if you’re first starting out and don’t have regular customers. There’s also very, very few sites that will let you host your content and very few payment programs that can be used for purchasing or selling sexual content.
Making professional porn can be risky in itself. A lot of studios purposely select inexperienced workers who don’t have the ability to refuse scenes they aren’t comfortable with, and abuse is rampant in the industry. Not because porn is inherently bad, but because abuse is rampant in EVERY industry and sex workers don’t have protections that people doing other jobs have. Porn is also frequently stolen and shared for free, which means much less pay.
Full service sex work is not only physically and emotionally exhausting, it’s also incredibly dangerous. It’s built on trust that clients will respect the worker’s boundaries and not take advantage of them or hurt them. If something happens, the worker can’t go to the police. They have no legal protections, and would likely face more abuse from authorities. There’s also the very real risk of being arrested just for existing as a sex worker.
Then there’s the specialty sex work, like professional domming, which might seem easy but requires extensive skill sets unique to each job and usually a lot of equipment.
Sex work is work. If you go into it expecting easy money, you’re just going to end up getting hurt. If you’re genuinely interested in getting into sex work, knowing the risks and requirements for it, then you need to speak to actual sex workers and learn from them so that you have accurate information and a safety net with people who can help you if something goes wrong.
