You readjusted the two plates in front of you as you checked the time on your phone again. He was late again, and of course, he didn’t even feel like letting you know.
You scrolled through your contacts and your fingers hovered over one in particular. You slowly pressed the call button and brought your phone up to your ear.
A familiar Aussie accent filled your ears, but you quickly realized that it was just the voicemail.
“Hello! You have reached Felix! Please leave your message at the tone, and I’ll call you back as soon as I get the chance.”
Usually, your best friend’s monotonous voicemail always made you laugh, but today it was making you feel impatient. As soon as you heard the click, you let out all of the emotions you had pent up over the past 2 hours.
“Hey Felix, I just wanted to call and ask where Chan was. He left early this morning and promised to be back by dinner, but he’s late again, he always is, does he even try to make it back home on time? It feels like he doesn’t care about me anymore, and I don’t know what to do. I just want to live happily with him, and I know his work is really important to him too, but I’m starting to doubt if he even loves me.”
You took a deep shaky breath, and just as you were about to put the phone down, you head a click on the other line.
“Hey, Y/N, sorry it took me a while to answer your call, what’s up?”
“Felix,“ you said, holding back the urge to burst into tears.
“Hey, hey, take a deep breath, what happened? Are you okay? Is the baby okay?”
You look down at your seven-and-a-half-month-old bump, slowly rubbing your hand around it.
“Yeah, yeah we’re fine. I just- Chan hasn’t come home yet.”
“Do you want me to find him?”
You nodded quickly, before realizing that he couldn’t see you.
“Give me a sec, I think he’s still in the studio with Changbin and Han.”
“Okay,” you answered, in a small voice.
You heard him call in the distance to your husband, and it wasn’t long before he was back on the line.
“I found him in the studio! They’re done recording, they’re just wrapping up so they should be out in 5 minutes.”
“Thank you so much, Felix. You’re the best.”
“I’m your best friend Y/N, I’m always here for you. Remember that, okay?”
“I know, and I’m here for you too.”
“If I were there with you right now, I’d give you a hug. Don’t worry, he’ll be home soon, so get some rest until then.”
“Fine, I will. But enough about me, how was your day?”
You could feel Felix beaming on the other end of the line as he detailed his entire day out for you, from his vocal lessons and dance practices to getting lunch with his bandmates. Just hearing your best friend's voice made you feel so much better, especially with the way Chan had been treating you these past few months. Maybe it was just pregnancy hormones, but you really wished that your husband was by your side, the way he promised he would be during your wedding vows. You felt the tears welling up in your eyes, and let them out slowly, careful to not let Felix hear you cry. But it was no use, he heard you anyways.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I don’t know why I’m being so emotional.”
“No, it’s okay, let it out, holding it in is not good for you or your baby.”
“Chan’s here, let me give him the phone.”
You held your breath as you heard shuffling and a familiar voice.
“Felix, can I talk to my wife in private? I’ll return your phone after I’m done,” you heard Chan say faintly. After more shuffling, you finally heard your husband clearly.
“Y/N, why did you call Felix and not me?”
“Chan- I- I texted you and you didn’t respond.”
“Well of course I didn’t respond! I was in the studio recording something. You can’t expect me to always answer my phone.”
“You could have at least texted me, I’ve been sitting here for the past 2 hours waiting for you to come home so we can eat together.”
“I never asked you to wait, and we need to finish this album soon, we have a comeback coming up! I still have so much work left to finish, and you know that.”
“No Y/N, no you don’t. Every night you keep asking me the same thing, and it really doesn’t seem like you understand.”
“Chan, I do. I do understand, but I am carrying your first child, all I ask is that you spare some time for us as well.”
“Why would I spare time for you when all you do is run after Felix?”
You stared back at your phone in shock, you had never heard Chan speak like this before. Felix was your best friend, in fact, he was the one who introduced you to Chan and encouraged you both to date.
“You think I haven’t noticed? The way you tell him everything- even things that you won’t tell me? Y/N I’m not dumb, just because you’re carrying my child doesn’t mean that you love me.”
You suddenly gasp, a sharp pain coming from your belly.
“I can’t help it that the truth hurts. That’s just the way it is.”
“Don’t lie to me for sympathy.”
But it was too late, he had already ended the call. You slowly sank to the floor, dizzy from the pain, before watching your phone light up. It took you a second to realize that there was an incoming call, so you feebly hit the answer button.
“Y/N? Y/N are you okay?? Chan didn’t seem too happy when he gave me my phone back, what’s going on?”
“Felix- please, it hurts. It hurts so much.”
“The baby- Felix please help me.”
Felix’s voice sounded panicky as he responded.
“Oh, oh no, oh no Y/N hold on. I’m coming, okay? I’ll be there as soon as I can, please take deep breaths for me.”
Felix continued to talk to you as he rushed over, helping you through different breathing exercises as the pain worsened. After what seemed like an eternity, the door to your apartment burst open, and Felix rushed in, finding you on the floor of the dining room.
“Hey, Y/N, I’m here now, just a little longer, okay? Han called an ambulance and it should be here any minute now.”
You nodded weakly and cried into his chest.
When the ambulance arrived and you got in, he stayed with you, whispering words of encouragement until you fell asleep.
Walking together towards his car in the parking lot, I watched Changbin picked up the phone, his facial expressions morphing from surprise to outrage. As the call ended, he slowly turned his cold eyes towards me.
“Chan, please tell me what Felix said isn’t true.”
I looked back at him, annoyed.
“What, she already told Felix? Married couples fight all the time, it’s normal. I just don’t understand why she has to tell my little brother everything about us.”
Changbin’s eyes lit up in fury before turning his stare towards the empty parking lot.
“You really don’t know, do you?”
Changbin shook his head sadly before returning his piercing gaze on you.
“Chan- your wife, she’s in the hospital.”
“WHAT- oh gods- she wasn’t lying”
“Get in the car, we’re going there.”
I was silent for the entire ride, guilt slowly consuming me. I was such a terrible husband, I shouldn’t have let my emotions get the best of me.
You weakly opened your eyes, searching your hospital for Felix but feeling disappointed when he wasn’t at your side. But you were surprised to find another figure in your room, hovering in the corner with red eyes.
Chan rushed towards you, kneeling at the side of your bed.
He gently brushed the hair out of your face and studied your features.
“I’m so sorry- I should have never said any of those words to you. You didn’t deserve to hear a single one of them, you deserve so much more than me.”
You tried to speak but he quickly silenced you by placing a finger on your lips.
“No, it’s not. I had no right to lash out at you, and take my insecurities out on you. And it’s okay if you don’t forgive me, because I should have listened to you but instead, I put you and our child at risk. You both always come first, even before my work, and I love you so much.”
Tears flooded down his cheek as he looked into your eyes, pleading.
You reached out and wiped his tears before he buried his face into your neck.
“It’s okay Chan, but please stay with me. This isn’t easy for me, and I really need your support.”
He nodded as you ran your fingers through his hair, and the two of you stayed like that for a while.
From that day forward, Chan started making more time for you. After their successful comeback and the birth of your first child, Chan even took a vacation from work to help you out. You were very appreciative of the gesture, knowing how much his work meant to him, but knowing that his love for you meant even more.
