I’m glad that OP:
1) Figured this out.
2) Shared so others can learn from their mistake.
ancient roman women whose husband keeps looking at the neighbour's boy quintus and he never looks at her that way and she can't even chainsmoke in the kitchen because they don't have marlboro blues in ancient times. and she can't even go to the club because they haven't discovered drum and bass music yet. her friend clodia's having visions of a woman named doechii but neither of them knows what that means
one time i was making potato soup and i needed broth for it but i was out of broth. but in my dog food cabinet there was a carton of chicken broth that i had bought for my dog. now the box did say HUMAN GRADE and the ingredients were just bog standard chicken broth. it did say something about joint health for dogs on there. but the ingredients were normal. i even compared the ingredients list to some normal person broth and they were the same. so i did put dog broth in that soup and it did taste completely normal. but i did use the dog broth.
WTF this is masterful, 10/10.
Other people have said this in notes, but the Bulwer-Lytton contest involves writing the most absurd opener you can think of and submitting it to the contest. It's not a judgment like the Razzies or the bad sex in books award or something; it's a game. Diana Murtaugh of Baltimore is to be congratulated for this win.
@pangur-and-grim
I feel like you'd have a great shot at this contest
I'm a little heartbroken to learn that the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest ended in 2025 when the person who founded it, Dr. Scott Rice, retired after 42 years. But the archive of past winners will remain up, so go forth and enjoy some deliberately absurd writing.

this photo i took of my gf
recurring dead wife flashback where it becomes increasingly apparent that the person remembering her has dishonestly claimed a romantic dynamic to their relationship that never actually existed and erased any conflict that ever existed between them now that she's no longer able to say no to them
dead wife flashback where each time we see her she looks more confused and upset by how she's remembered, then desperate and furious, until she's hammering on the glass screaming to be let out
this isn't how it happened. you know this isn't how it happened. but you still keep coming back, keep disturbing my grave so you can play out your fantasies. voyeurs crowding around my autopsy, straining for the best view; pawing through my entrails like grubby butchers trying to find some golden meaning in blood and shit because you can't bear to face the cold light of truth. you just can't bear the thought of never having really known me at all.

I actually have a lot to say about this, as someone who’s seen both secular and religious-reasons homeschooling families, and was homeschooled for part of my childhood for moderately good reasons (overall some problems some benefits, it’s the only life I’ve got so I try not to overthink it)
Anyway, I’m kind of intrigued by the “trickle down stupidity” statement, because overall the homeschooled teenagers and post-homeschooling adults I’ve known were solidly at or above grade level at basically everything, with the exception of the young earth creationists being young earth creationists (obviously).
I’d say the major downside is that every homeschooled person is noticeably socially delayed, and it’s one that I rarely see mentioned by people in education policy, probably because they don’t want to admit that self-teaching from a textbook works no more poorly than middle school. But there’s absolutely a “homeschooler voice” that you can learn to pick up on, mannerisms, and so on. It’s almost like “induced autism” for lack of a more tasteful description. You’ll have these people who are obviously mentally operating at a high level, but they’re just slightly off in terms of interacting with their peers, or any adult they don’t perceive as a parental figure.
There are obviously huge confounding variables here, in that all secular homeschool families basically do it to protect their overly sensitive children from the school system and most of those kids are neurodivergent, but it does seem to delay many social milestones.
Anyway, just an aspect that I’ve noticed missing from the discussion. Although I understand that people in education policy probably find it uncomfortable to ponder if the major value of the school system is teaching kids how to talk to other kids so that they can learn to have romantic relationships at the right age and making sure they’re up to date on pop culture touchstones
