Kumi Mashiba:

She's a woman in a shonen manga need I say more? Okay I will say more, she's the main love interest of the main character Ippo Makunouchi, a boxer. She's a nurse who's seen him steadily get more and more damage with every match he's had, seen her brother beat people so badly they retire. She doesn't think she'll ever like boxing and encourages Ippo to retire after he gets brain damage. She gets it from a bunch of angles, she's the easiest target of the people stepping in the main character's way to keep boxing (there's others but most are not women), she's not like a multitude of other characters' love interests who are written to cheer them on no matter how injured they might get. She's the number one obstacle in the way of other ships such as Ippo with any of his multitude of rivals.

I love her, and she's always getting reduced down to evil woman who stands in Ippo's way of fulfilling his dreams (ignoring the fact that while she is very much in favour of him not boxing she's not the one who made that decision), or standing in the way of the people who really understand him (usually the other men in his life). She's a really funny double act with her brother who is incredibly evil looking and overly protective which also leads to some incredibly funny solo moments where she turns on the family resemblance and looks incredibly sinister herself. And yeah she can be a bit jealous and possessive but in her defence c'mon. She's the main love interest in a shonen manga that's 1500+ chapters long, she's been trapped in a state Schrodinger's Relationship the decades, she could start killing and I'd forgive her. She's an orphan who had to work through school and emotionally support her brother who keeps getting fired for being the most evil looking man to ever exist. She deserves everything.

Mary Winchester:

The show brought her back to show she has flaws and wasn't a perfect mother and people act like this was a stupid decision and dislike her character for being messy and not acting like a mother to her now adult sons when that is literally the point of her character.

The fandom largely adopts the show’s misogyny towards Mary and all of its female characters. I don’t actually see very much of this first hand because I am good at curating my online experience, but I do know that people tend to think she should have been a better mom and blame her for things that it makes no sense to blame her for. The vast majority of the fandom also just generally takes Dean’s/the show runners’ perceptions of all the events in the show to be accurate, and all of those views that they take to be accurate are misogynistic.

Mary is a fascinating part of the dead girl genre, especially in how similar to Laura Palmer she is. They both had men trying to solve/avenge their murder as the whole plot of their show, but they also were both entirely misunderstood by these men. Nobody knew about Laura’s sex life/drug use/etc. and nobody knew about Mary being a hunter. Considering that SPN drew some inspiration from Twin Peaks, I would almost think that this is on purpose, but the show itself is so misogynistic that I wonder if they could have done commentary on misogyny on purpose. Mary is the most interesting character in the show imo and I’m sad that the fandom at large doesn’t have more intelligent discussions about her.
