I LOVE LIBRARIES!!

My library does “stuffed animal sleepovers” where kids leave their stuffed animals at the library overnight. Then the staff lets teenagers in after-hours to arrange the stuffed animals into fun scenes and take a bunch of pictures for the library’s social media. And then the little kids come back the next day and get to see all the pictures of their stuffed animals reading, playing games, riding around the library on book carts, etc 🥹

hi, pharmacy tech who has been on both sides of this predicament here! check to see if your state has adopted some form of kevin's law, which is used to allow emergency partial refills (usually restricted to non-controlled substances and/or drugs that youve filled at that location previously) of 72 hours worth of the drug you need at the pharmacists discretion. it was named after kevin houdeshell, a diabetic who died over new year's eve because his prescriber wasnt answering during the holidays and he had no insulin refills. some states only allow insulin refills. if you live in the US, look up what protections you may have in your state

On the left, the Faerie Dragon! Dragons about 1 to 1.5 feet long, 30 to 46 cm. They also come in every color of the rainbow! On the right, Orog! 7 ft (2.1 m) tall, they're mountain orcs adapted to the underdark. However, while everyone else who goes to the underdark seems to become way more evil, these orcs just improved their smithing and came back basically the same. Just got a trade degree and a bit pale. Tougher and more knowledgeable than the average orc, that's the power of an honest education in a trade you enjoy. If you're interested in an orc that would be forklift certified, this one's for you!

Buddy: I think I learned about inertia in physics class!

Cy: Yep! An object in motion, stays in motion!

Cy: Basically, autistic inertia means we have difficulty starting, stopping and switching tasks.

Buddy: Well (elipsis) maybe autistic people just don’t wanna do those tasks!

Cy: That’s a misconception! Wanting seems to have little to do with it.

Autistic inertia affects us even if we want to switch to a fun task! It’s almost like (elipsis) our brains resist!

Cy’s brain: No! (with an elongated “o”)

Buddy: But why?

Cy: Well, some of us have a disconnect between our body and mind. Studies show that while autistic people do tell our bodies to move, they don’t always listen.

Cy, thinking: Brush teeth brush teeth brush teeth brush teeth brush teeth brush teeth brush teeth brush teeth

Other Cy: Brush your teeth! Do it!

The toothbrush is right there!

Cy: People report feeling “stuck” in an inactive state, like time has slowed down. Difficulty finding the “first step” can also contribute to getting stuck! Regardless of why it happens, it seems that (ellipsis) an autistic in motion stays in motion, and an autistic at rest stays at rest. This impacts productivity, which makes many people feel stressed.

Buddy: OMG we have to help these people! I’ve got calendars, alarms, to do lists, motivational quotes, rewards (elipsis)

Cy: Unfortunately, those things don’t help people experiencing autistic inertia. Autistic inertia was studied for the first time in 2021 by an autistic researcher, after autistic people called for a study on it. More research is needed to understand how to fully support it. Here’s what may help! The best thing according to current research is a buddy who can (ellipsis) be an example & prompt you

Buddy: Grab your brush!

Cy: provide (gentle) external pressure

Buddy: Hey it’s time to stop for dinner!

Wow! So I can help with autistic inertia?

Cy: Yes! Also, here’s some solutions that help me when I’m alone

I minimize task switching in my daily life. If I get stuck, I try to focus on moving just one finger! I hope you learned that we aren’t lazy. We have autistic inertia, and sometimes (ellipsis) we just aren’t in motion. End description]

Interestingly, the introduction of the paper says,

“It is unclear from the existing literature whether these difficulties with initiation arise from: (i) social-emotional factors …, (ii) executive dysfunction…, (iii) movement differences such as catatonia …, or another mechanism as yet unidentified.”

(Quote shortened by me.)

I would have thought (and many other people in the notes, too, it seems) that this is a classical and obvious example of executive dysfunction. I mean, what else would it be, right? But I guess aspects of autism that do not relate to social-emotional or repetitive behaviors are so under-studied that such a definitive answer can’t be made, and the author lists two other possible causes.
