If
by Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, donāt deal in lies, Or being hated donāt give way to hating, And yet donāt look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dreamāand not make dreams your master; If you can thinkāand not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same: If you can bear to hear the truth youāve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build āem up with worn-out tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: āHold on!ā
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kingsānor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty secondsā worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything thatās in it, Andāwhich is moreāyouāll be a Man, my son!
āGeneral periodic reminder: The term ātoxic masculinityā does not mean āall men are toxic.ā It refers to cultural norms that equate masculinity with control, aggression, and violence and that label emotion, compassion, and empathy āunmanly.āĀ

Had to explain this to one of my good friends recently.Ā āToxic masculinityā doesnāt mean that everything considered masculine is toxic. It describes the way cultural ideas of masculinity have been corrupted by sexism to a point of toxicity.

Soft things my dad has done
One time when he was 18, he was fishing and found a baby salamander someone had tried and failed to use as bait. It had a huge gash in its side and didnāt look like it would make it. He put it in the bucket he was going to put fish in and took it home, then performed āsurgeryā on the little guy to mend the gash. It couldnāt move, so my dad fed it and nursed it back to health until the gash was healed. Since heād taken it in as a baby, it wasnāt equipped to stay alive in the wild, so he kept it in a giant aquarium next to his bed. It stayed alive until my sister was born six years later.
His dad took him deer hunting once when he was in middle school. They hunted all day and never saw a single deer. At the end of the day as the sun was setting, they found one, and my dad yelled at my grandpa not to shoot it because it didnāt deserve to die. He hasnāt been deer hunting since.
Two people I used to be best friends with donāt have stable parents. My dad takes them out for lunch and out fishing regularly, and even though I am not friends with either of them anymore, he still makes time for them as if they were his own kids.
Sometimes I catch him crying at videos of dogs on the internet.
One time he was crying and I asked him what was wrong and he gave me a hug and said there isnāt always a reason. Iāve held on to that.
He told me that if (if) he dies, he wants to die by being drowned in a horde of puppies because otherwise, whatās the point?
He makes sure to say āI love youā to my mom and me every day, because he once told me he never once heard it from his parents as a kid.
Saw my mom looking at a bird, so he found out what kind of bird it was and drew a picture of it for her.
Heard me crying after a hard day and brought me a box of milk duds, because even though Iām lactose intolerant, it was an occasion on which they were needed.
Shows me every day that men who feel allowed to be open, vulnerable, soft, and emotional are so much happier than men who are told to keep it all inside.

Am I the only one who canāt really get with this whole āOMG North and South Korea marched in as one isnāt the unity beautiful!ā Thing? Like the announcers have been handling it with kid gloves and only brief mentions of āhuman rights violation concernsā on the part of North Korea but letās get serious for a minute. The leftists love to compare Trump to Hitler but a much more apt modern Hitler comparison is Kim Jong Un. The horror he has wrought upon his own people cannot be understated. Just a month or two ago we were looking at a story of a man desperately crossing the border into South Korea and getting shot several times in the process because to him the only options were to get the hell out of there or die trying. People are being forced into work camps, tortured, killed, experimented on, starved, beaten, separated from families, worked to death, and the list goes on. Un has likely had members of his own family and confidants killed. Even that sister of his standing in the viewing box is not safe from his wrath if he turns it against her.
Itās a little hard for me to smile and pretend that North Korea is just another delegation in this friendly competition between countries. I know that conflicts and disagreements are often set aside for the sake of the Olympics, but these massive and severe human rights violations are a little hard for me to stomach while pretending everything is all right and itās totally wonderful that North and South Korea are playing nice for two weeks.
Me too! Also this is facilitated by the backing of the 50k American soldiers and the US military aid that has basically allowed the south to develop in safety and letās them play āunity and diplomatā with a seriously evil regime
It encourages me, because, despite the despot, there are families separated in the North and South that just want to see an end to the barrier between the countries. Are there atrocities going on in the North? Absolutely. Are there people there suffering. Yes. But we know what the alternatives to peace talks are. No one buys the North's, "All fine up here! Don't look behind the curtain!" No one with half a brain, anyways. Not all of the South wants reunification because of the massive economic burden it would put on them to bring the North into this century, but pauses to threats and conflict are celebrated because the option of reunification though nuclear warfare isn't a pretty alternative.
This is the most wholesome thing Iāve ever freaking seen.
