My opinions on Spider-Man Brand New Day that no one asked for! SPOILERS!!!!!!!

Sorry for the long read.

In no particular order:

I did not know that Big Brother Frank Castle- Little Brother Peter Parker was a dynamic I needed to see, but I need to see more. And just to get this out of the way, the heartbreak on Frank's face when he shot Peter! I wanted to hug Frank. Like no, buddy, don't worry, he'll be ok, probably (more on this later).

Thank you Marvel for not throwing MJ and Peter back together first chance they got. The memory wipe spell was heartreaking and character defining and I was so afraid they were going to undo it for the main characters for convenience.

Also thank you for having both Peter and MJ conflicted about even trying to start a relationship. Of course Peter wouldn't want to put MJ in danger (and reminded me of Tobey not getting together with Mary Jane for his first two movies). And of course MJ wouldn't want to get into a relationship with someone she really doesn't actually know. But when she said she could see why a version of her would love him, my heart actually broke a little.

Although I would have also liked to see a little more of MJ's relationship with her current boyfriend. I know it doesn't play a role in the movie, but it would have been even more heartbreaking if Peter was in a situation where he couldn't even be upset with the guy she ended up with cause he can tell that this guy really does care for MJ. Even better would have been if during the party scene the boyfriend is the first to notice Peter and is friendly/nice to Peter before MJ and Ned are. All that's really said about him is that he knows MJ is withholding, which I also didn't care for. How much more angst could there have been if she (after learning to let her guard down with Peter and Ned) truly did have a strong connection with the boyfriend.

While I loved seeing characters like Hulk/Bruce and Yelena, I didn't think they were really needed for this movie. Hear me out! I love a good fight, but it kinda felt like you could have replaced him with any other strong character and still get a decent fight. Plus this makes it the third time this character has been mind controlled by a slightly mentally unstable younger sibling (see Loki in Avengers and Wanda in Age of Ultron) so it feels a little redundant. It also feels like that Marvel has no idea what to do with Hulk at this point. In Endgame he and Bruce were in harmony, in She-Hulk he was just suppressing to heal and was even in Smart Hulk form at the end, and now he's afraid of Hulk again? Although, I do like that he does play a role in the inhibitor tech.

Yelena does help connect Peter to the MCU/New Avengers, which means I am hoping to see him in Doomsday (I doubt we've actually gotten the full cast list yet). But she could have also been replaced with almost anyone else who can give Spider-Man information. Frankly, if they insisted on it being a New Avenger, Bucky may have been a better choice. He was a Senator (I think) so of course he'd have access to highly confidential information/other connections/ better reason/resources to investigate Damage Control. And he was familiar with Spider-Man thanks to the Airport Fight and final fight with Thanos. So he'd respect him at the very least.

I was terrified that Jean Grey would be in a similar situation in which she could have been replaced with anyone, but no I loved her as this role. And as an introduction to mutants in the MCU (does Ms. Marvel count?) she actually is a strong and familiar character to have put on screen. Her motivations were completely understandable. They showed she was powerful but not OP like other media tends to try to make her. I also love that they showed her abilities are still growing and that mutant abilities aren't always stagnant/predictable. Honestly, I can see this version of Jean developing the Phoenix naturally like in that cartoon Wolverine and the X-Men, where it had always been a part of her, but grew into something powerful. And all due respect to the original X-Men movies, but Sadie Sink's version had more character and development in this one film than Famke Janssen's version had in all three movies. There I said it.

And the reveal of V-MAX!!!!!! When I first heard it I thought it had to have been some connection with the X-Men. She had misread something about it on some file, she knew it was some place for mutants but didn't know specifics, that she was actually sent by the X-Men. More likely that it was some vauge comic reference I didn't understand. Then when Sarah's abduction (whose name I don't recognize) was revealed, I thought Sarah was trying to send Jean to the X-Men (again a mistranslatioin of some kind). But no, it was the last thing Sarah SAW! Jean's crash out was fully valid.

Even beyond the grave, May Parker was playing MVP- Most Valuable Parker. She was the mother figure that Jean needed, and Peter was more than willing to share May's wisdom/love with May. I love that it was something so simple that got Jean to stop. It shows how little things can be so impactful especially to young, grieving teenagers. It also sets up the importance of Xavier's school and the impact he'll have on his students (Marvel I need to know whose going to be the new Xavier and Magneto). I only hope that when X-Men are introduced that they don't throw away Jean and Peter's relationship, I would love to see more (as friends).

Finally Peter! My sad little spider. I love how they showed that even though he's doing all these wonderful things as Spider-Man, even getting the key to the city, none of that matters to him without his friends/loved ones. That montage also showed how loved he is by New York so that when he is in the hospital it fits that the city would be there for him. Although I would have also liked to see J.Jonah Jameson/Daily Bugle around as an almost reflection of all these negative thoughts Peter has about himself that he uses as reasons to not get personal with anyone.

Unfortunately, Peter getting shot was spoiled for me (the cons of working at a movie theater). But when I saw how big that blood puddle was under Peter I still got scared. Like no, did I mishear them, am I about to lose one of my 4 favorite Spider-Men?! But no, Peter lives to swing another day! And Frank being a giant kid in the spider mask, distracting everyone *French kiss*. I also like that in addition to New York gathering around/rooting for Spider-Man, the police force is also supporting him for once. Kinda- They didn't turn on him the second he did something bad, so progress. It also got Yelena- any (New) Avenger- to care about the 'small' things in a meaningful way. I would love if this opens the door for Peter to working with other heroes more often.

Yes, I would have changed some things, but I love the rest so much more. I don't pay attention to any casting/contract rumors, especially since so many of them end up coming back after they say their done anyways. This movie was character driven rather than action driven. So I would love to see more of Tom Holland as Spider-Man, see where he goes from here. Maybe we can even get to the point of seeing an Adult Peter Parker being a mentor to the younger generations of heroes.

Alas time will tell. So I give this movie a 9 out of 10. Have a happy Spider.

People of Tumblr! I need advice 😔

I (F25) have been in college for the last several years doing online courses. Unfortunately the way the school has their courses set up is that the online courses are exclusively 8-week courses and the campus is over an hour way so I'm not in a position to do in person classes. The only way I can manage school, work, church and retain my financial aid is by only doing 2 classes a semester, which has probably slowed down my ability to gain by degree.

Recently, two of my grandparents health has turned for the worse. Specifically, my grandmother had to have surgery and needs help. My mother and my aunt are trying to figure out a system to help her and my grandpa. However, my mother has Charcot Marie Tooth Disorder, it's a type of neuropathy that affects the muscles in her extremities. So she has to use leg braces, a walker, and has trouble grasping things. It has started to worsen over the last couple of years and she has several projects that she hasn't completed because of it. She has often told me not to worry about her projects so I can focus on my studies. My father has ADD and another form of neuropathy that makes it hard for him to bend and lift things too. So he hasn't been able to help her in the ways she needs it. To make matters worse she is not working (disability is just over $1,000) and he is a part time substitute teacher who just started working again.

So my dilemma is should I drop the fall semester to help my grandma, and my mom catch up with her projects. If I don't take any courses this fall then I won't receive any refund/financial aid from the school and I'm worried I'll fall even further behind on my studies. Additionally since my Dad was off during the summer, it has been my job and the grace of God thats been (barely) keeping us afloat. The refund check i received from financial aid was a great help this summer.

Neither of my parents went to college and so don't have any advice/insight on the situation and have just told me to do what I am comfortable with. But I do not know what's the right choice: do I give you school for (hopefully) a semester to help my family or do I push through it and try to find someway to manage? I need help 😭😭

I remember a teacher who holds a special place on my "F--- You" Pedestal.

In seventh grade there was a major storm going on, nothing horrible yet. That comes about 5 minutes later when the fire alarm goes off. Now we had a huge window in our classroom (We were also close to a side exit, hold onto that). It was almost pitch dark outside, so the class was like 'Are we going out in that?'

Next thing I know, my teacher, this 300+lb guy gets up and runs out of the classroom without a single word. Our entire class sits there in stun silence for a minute as we look at the door, alarm still going.

We decided getting wet would be better than burning, cause it had to be a real fire if it's going off during a storm right? We get out into the hall and NO ONE else was there. No one else in our hall was evacuating the building. So we are just standing in the middle of the hallway trying to figure out what to do. We can also see out the window near the side door at this point, in addition to rain we see it's hella windy.

Luckily for us at that moment, a teacher aide is rushing past. She stops dead in her tracks and looks at this random group of 15-25 7th graders in the hall and asks where our teacher is. We still don't know. She tells us to get away from the door/windows since there's a tornado warning and we all gather in the hall, kneeling against the lockers as she is trying to call someone (I assume the principal). She then takes us to the gym, half the school is in there as everyone tries to figure out what's going on. During all of this the fire alarm is still going.

After an hour or so, the alarm stops, the storm clears up, and everyone is told to go back to their class. Again, we question what we're supposed to do. The aide takes us back to our classroom and stays with us. Another hour or so later, our teacher finally shows up. Does not even acknowledge he was gone most of the day, does not apologize for abandoning the class in its literal darkest hour. Did plant the seed for my distrust of teachers for the rest of my middle/high school career.

I would learn that it was a combination of faulty wiring and a 6th grade science project went wrong. I also learned that during that following summer he moved states. But also that he never faced any consequences. It's been almost 12 years and I'm still not entirely over it.

it’s been two years, but i think that an icon like her deserves to be known about by more people.

her name was freddie oversteegen and she, at the age of fourteen, along with her older sister truus who was 16 and their friend johanna “hannie” schaft who was 19, was a part of the netherlands most famous all female resistance cell which was dedicated to fighting the nazis and dutch traitors.

among other things, they are known to have blown up bridges and railroads, smuggled jewish children from concentration camps and, as the tweet mentions, seducing nazis and then shooting them with guns that they had hidden in their bike baskets. freddie is quoted as having said that they “had to do it.” and that it was a “necessary evil, killing those who betrayed good people.”

though freddie and her sister truus were both lucky and survived the war, hannie schaft wasn’t. at the age of 24, hannie was caught and around three weeks later was executed by nazis, only 18 days before the netherlands were eventually liberated. she was shot with one only wounding her, and, before the final shot, hannie is quoted as having told the executioners: ik schiet beter, which translates to “i shoot better.”

though she didn’t survive, hannie is recognized as a national icon and a face of the dutch resistance, with her story even being retold in a movie from 1981 called “the girl with the red hair.” along with this, truus also founded the national hannie schaft foundation in 1992, on which freddie served as a board member.

freddie, at the time of her death, was 92 years old and the last surviving member of the resistance cell, with truus having died two years earlier at the age of 92.

though these women and all that they did played an important part in the dutch resistance, they are often overlooked in history outside of the netherlands. it’s important that they are remembered and that their work to save people isn’t forgotten. it’s incredible what they did, especially given how young they were, and they deserve more recognition than what they’ve gotten.

Peter: I'm good Mr Thor. How are you? How was space? How is Asgard? Did you fight any big aliens? Or scary monsters? Thor: Oh I have much to tell you. As soon as Heimdall sent me to Asgard on the Bi-frost I was met with a ginormous and fearsome beast- Peter: That's so cool Mr Thor! I was wondering, can you run fast? Thor: Yes, very Peter: Great! Do you wanna race around the tower and see who wins? Thor: That sounds like fun, let us go! Thor and Peter ran off, out through the door and around the tower right as Tony walked into the room Tony: Where are they going? Steve: They're racing around the tower. Is everything okay with him? He seems a little off Tony: He had his first sip of coffee Steve: You gave that kid coffee? What's wrong with you? Tony: I admit that I may have made a mistake Steve: May?! Tony: Okay, I did make a mistake Suddenly Peter comes flying back into the room Peter: Oh hey Mr Stark! Did you know I can run faster than Thor? Thor runs though the door and stop with his hand on his knees, panting Thor, breathlessly: Y-you are a v-very fast run-runner Tony: That's it, you are NEVER having coffee again Peter: But I love coffee! It's amazing! Thor: What is coffee? Tony: No, nope, nu uh, not again!
