I really want to do more murderbot art (particularly environmental studies since I want to get better at those, and particularly ART's interior because ART is the best character), so I have been going through book descriptions to see what's concrete and what's up for interpretation (which is most of it, since Murderbot is allergic to describing things it considers superfluous to its current mission). This has been a great opportunity to dig through the books and notice details I previously overlooked.

That being said, I've come away really feeling like some of the official book art is somewhat misleading on the sheer scale of ART, because holy shit, ART would have to be massive. It is effectively a floating campus, complete with student dormitories, multiple classrooms, a fully kitted kitchen, separate crew quarters with their own common spaces and amenities, an automated surgical suit, (multiple?) laboratories, and multiple auxiliary vehicles - and that's just accounting for the parts of it humans live in and have access to on the reg, and certainly not accounting for its various totally-not-weapon weapons. It houses dozens of crew members and researchers even when it's not housing students. We're looking at something on the scale of the Enterprise rather than the Millennium Falcon, to pull some more famous science fiction examples. ... which does make the fact that Murderbot came on board the crewless Perihelion, fully expecting to commandeer it via bribing its 'bot pilot' and ride off to its next destination, way funnier.

“I’m a federal transgender inmate, and I’ve been incarcerated since 2010. Being a double minority — a transgender and a Black person — the Fourth of July is nothing but a good meal in the chow hall.

Growing up, I didn’t know that I was on a pipeline to prison. I remember being harassed by police in the streets of Galveston, Texas, standing on the corner with my friends. Then I would watch other young people standing on the corners in their White neighborhoods who didn’t get harassed.

There’s this profound song called “Scholarship 2 the Pen” by a rapper in Houston named ‘Lil Keke. Like the title suggests, I didn’t grow up hearing about college or how I could get financial aid. Instead, I went into a Scared Straight program, which didn’t do anything but show me what prison was like. Meanwhile, in more suburban and White neighborhoods, kids heard questions like, “What college are you going to? Who are you going to intern for?” It was no surprise that I eventually caught a case.

Today, with Donald Trump in office, it seems like they’re rolling back all of our rights. I’m incarcerated here with a lot of Black men who were literally sitting in front of the television when Trump was getting elected saying, Oh, he’s gonna let us out of jail. I told them, “No, he’s not. He does not care about you.”

All of this is why the Fourth of July is nothing more to me than a big hamburger with all the fixings, a ‘brat or two, some watermelon, and some type of ice cream dish.

Something I do find lovely about the first 4 Murderbot Diaries books (can’t yet speak on all of them) is:

Murderbot chronically finding new scientists/travellers to claim as “clients” (whether paid or not) like one of those sheepless herding dogs that goes around finding sheep (or anything else they can herd like a flock of sheep). Like it clearly has a protect humans instinct and a desperate need for enrichment.

Given its general lack of self awareness and unreliable narrator status, there’s no way in hell Murderbot is aware it’s doing this.
