Arguments about the differences between Marvel and DC are often so silly. "DC is grittier, while Marvel is for kids", "No, Marvel is edgier, actually", "DC is about Gods and big events, while Marvel is about street level mortals and relatable moments", "Marvel is woke garbage, while DC is for real alphas", or whatever the fuck.

The real difference between Marvel and DC is in DC comics, you have an endless line of indistinguishable white men with black hair and blue eyes, and in Marvel comics you have an endless line of indistinguishable white men with blond hair and blue eyes.

nightwing is my guilty pleasure. like i love jason soooooo much. i get him, he gets me. i love reading abt him and overanalyzing his characteristics and his flaws but fuckkkkk is nightwing a writer/reader's wet dream.

the self loathing? the perfectionism? the loneliness? he's always been such an interesting character and the parallels between him and bruce have never failed to drive me crazy. his new 52 run is soooo good ive read it abt a million times. and then reading abt him healing and getting better, finding his footing as a solo vigilante? soooo gooddddd AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

the reality is that every character in the history of writing has been edgy as shit at least ONCE and it’s high key important that they are bc it’s realistic. people evolve and devolve, they’re flawed and imperfect.

for example, saying that a ‘happy’ or ‘charismatic’ character being portrayed occasionally as ‘depressed’ or ‘angsty’ as ooc feels sooooo immature. because it just doesn’t make sense for someone to be, and feel, ONE thing ALL the time.

let characters be angsty, let em be depressed!! fuck, let em be embarrassing!! let them be flawed and make mistakes as if they were real people!! it makes for better writing anyway!!

i think jason’s a people watcher to me. and i mean as a bat it would make sense, they’re supposed to be super observant but i think he enjoys it beyond vigilante-related activities.

i could totally see him in a coffee shop or a grocery store just literally staring at people, fascinated by their presence. especially civilians. cuz it’s like, he never got that life and he never rlly will so ofc he’d be interested in how other people spend their days when they’re not occupied with ‘protecting gotham and defending its people’.

cuz it’s not like vigilantes or capes do ALL the things civilians do out of costume. like students go study at food places, coworkers have nights out together at bars, teenagers shoot the shit in parks, etc. etc.

i just feel like he’d enjoy observing those kinda things yk?

give me surfer boy hal who dresses like he's always on a boardwalk. give me hal who still says "stoked" and "rad" and uses the hang loose hand gesture and keeps sunscreen in his pocket. have him constantly drop ocean creature facts and offer to take the alien gl's snorkeling.

there's so much material for that and it would be so fun

don’t get me wrong i think hcs and different interpretations of fiction and characters are cool asf and just as important for writing as the actual literature but fuck do i lowkey hate the whole ‘pit madness’ hc for jason.

one. it’s not rlly how the pit works. (which makes sense cuz it’s a hc) but the pit just heals things. like that is quite literally it. it can’t even bring people back to life. it just healed his brain damage yall.

two. it waters down his character. this is the bigger problem i have with it, when people write these fics or treat canon jason as this insane psychopath that has magical anger issues caused by the green goo it highkey invalidates his feelings and reasons for acting the way he does. we could debate forever abt if he’s right or not but the idea that his anger is fabricated or not his just goes against his writing completely. like let jason todd be mad normally!! let the man feel his feels!!

i will say, i do genuinely enjoy the hc that his eyes turned green after his deep dive. now THAT is a cutesy little quirk that i could see happening.
