I has started my linen pants!

It was very scary!

Now I'm fitting the butt, and after that I'll start on the closure, and the pockets

It's just so scary to work with fabric that is so nice!!

Yesterday I finished the waistband. So I only need to add the a key cuffs and the closure (and dye them) they are basically done! But I am procrastinating so so so so so much 😵‍💫

If I manage to finalize them by August, I'll be happy enough 😅v

This is easily one of the CRAZIEST videos I've ever gotten. I was rafting down a river when a Yellow Jacket came, landed on my bright pink waterproof phone pouch, and started drinking from the water droplets that had gathered there.

The most amazing part is how the water droplet magnifies the Hornet's mouth parts, so you get to see them up-close!!!! It was FASCINATING to witness!

Day 6 (December 13)

Today's fiber is The Algorithm from Hipstrings, 75% merino and 25% bamboo (rayon/viscose). The merino is mostly a deep, almost black, navy with dark purple and cyan bamboo, which reminded me of the luminous lagoon (left side of bottom right photo) I spun last year (the blue in lagoon is mulberry silk). In person I see the purple in The Algorithm, but it doesn't pop.

One of the projects I have in the back of my mind is a series of blends with 75% dark wool and 25% bright silk. After I finish all the other projects in my queue.

This is what I spun on the rest day :) On Sunday I blocked my first ever skein of handspun!!!!! I learned so much, including how welcoming and supportive spinblr is 💕 I also learned I really like it when there's a thin dark single plied with a light fluffy single. So I'm going to try that out. The dark drown will be my contrast single and then I'm going to figure out how to blend two fibers. Wish me luck 🤞

the thing about the concept of gendered socialization is that so many people use it as like another kind of gender essentialism. you know it's not an immutable trait right. you can literally overcome it.

"i'm like this because women are socialized to be shy and quiet and subservient" okay good on you for recognizing it, but that's only the very first step. the next few steps are that you Stop Doing It. feminist thought vs feminist action.

and when ppl see a trans woman being confident and unafraid to take up space and decide it's because of her evil evil male socialization, i'm always like "wait you're saying this woman was raised as a child to be loud and confident and take up space? that's awesome, i thought that's how we WANTED people to raise girls? why exactly is it a problem now? 🤔"

like WHY are you telling trans women that they literally have to make themselves smaller and conform to the WORST gender exceptations of women to be seen as real women. since when is it evil and masculine to be confident, i thought we were supposed to be doing that. i thought that was feminism.

and this is all beside the point that like a good half of trans women i've met were pretty shy and quiet, because apparently transmisogyny is not something that makes you feel confident and like you're allowed to take up space. turns out whether you were raised to follow Girl Rules or Boy Rules as a child is just one of many influences on your personality, and not necessarily THE defining one. who'da thunk.

As a disabled person: a world with no modern tech, no modern medicine, no electricity, and no single-use plastics is a world that cannot keep a great many disabled people alive

And if an imagined future doesn't involve keeping us alive, I want no part of it

This is why we need to develop direct plastic recycling or plastic bio recycling via organisms that eat it instead of just never making plastic again. We need to actually figure out how to break it down so that it can be sustainable, so that disabled people don’t have to die in order for our planet to not go extinct or have a disaster. (Obviously I’m not suggesting to harm anyone that would be unintelligent and homicidal. I’m saying we need to force plastic to work.) All disabled people deserve to live no matter what their disability requires to stay alive.

We need to make our technology to work for people, not sacrifice more disabled people at the altar of profit and convenience.

Ecofascism (e.g., saying that we need to let people die in order to save the planet) is still fascism for a reason.

And as you said: "All disabled people deserve to live no matter what their disability requires to stay alive."

I don't care if an individual disabled person's care costs a million dollars. (Which, thanks to the horrific state of United States health care, for some people, it does, in the long-term.) Every single disabled person deserves to live. Every single person has the right to life. Period.

No, unfortunately plastic cannot safely be replaced with any particular plastic alternative. At least for the foreseeable future.

This is because most organic things, such as bamboo and fibers and wood, are porous - and therefore physically impossible to medically sanitize

This is also because organic substances are, by nature, very frequently capable of reacting chemically with things in human bodies, because human bodies are also organic. (Organic in this sense doesn't refer to food; it means "of, relating to, or derived from living organisms" here. Sense 2a at the dictionary link)

Also most alternative plastics are just plastics with like 5% bamboo fiber or whatever, but that's like five whole other posts
