There is a special place in the voidest part of my heart for people who think exclusion is the answer to illiteracy
some of you forgot about the joy and magic of reading and it shows
Luxurious artwork cheapened by meta commentary about its own success
Profound script undercut by sponsorships and promotions
Timeless classic rendered timeful and fleeting by pop culture references
Captivating prose dulled by the need to self-censor for monetization
Transcendent media made obtuse by dependence on the platform where it was hosted
yeah yeah rainbow capitalism is bad and whatever but like. when I was a child, being pro gay was not the popular or lucrative choice. I'm happy that times have changed.
I miss rainbow capitalism. I do. I miss when it felt like public opinion was still pro gay. I understand it was always an empty gesture, but it mattered in a sense of knowing how socially acceptable being queer is. If that makes sense.
being online is so scary aren't you guys worried about the world wide spider
It took 36 years for someone to make this joke and by god it was worth the wait
I love this so much! Also it triggered a memory and I spent far longer than I want to admit trying to find this 2002(ish) pic from Aussie cartoonist Judy Horacek
i love this!
i did a bit of digging and found that some bloke named Simon Brooke used the OP's joke as his email signature at least as early as March 14th, 1995 according to this quoted text. it takes a while to find a preserved copy of something Simon said but here's an example from mid-96:
My bad
A hummingbird thought a man’s orange hat was a flower [x]
Iv never seen a hummingbird sit before lol
i wasn’t going to reblog until he sat

Because Etsy is a cesspit of AI and dropshipped bullshit now... can you guys drop me links to stores of independent artists?
They can make clothes and accessories, they can sell prints or stickers or pins, they can make tiny figurines (I LOVE tiny figurines), they can make dice, they can make something I haven't thought of, their store can even be on Etsy itself, you JUST have to be sure they're a real person who actually makes their own art.
Artists please self-promote. Non-artists please shove any stores you like at me, brag about your artists friends, and/or reblog so the artists will see this. I want you to destroy my activity page.
Give us recommendations for artists I can get little presents for my wife from. Please. I legitimately want as many artists in the pool as possible.
Im trying to get back into commissions since i need to buy some stuff like a new phone.
I do a handful of fiber crafts like crochet, cross stitch and knitting, and I also make press on nails. I can be reached on tumblr, but I can chat in other places like email or discord.
Here's some of the stuff Ive done in the last couple months + my current cross stitch commission.
1 & 2: press on nails for my sister
3. Cotton washcloths
4. In-progress pic of a scarf for my partner.
5. Colorwork knitted mittens.
6. Crochet hexagon toddler sweater.
7. Colorwork knitted beanie.
8. Crochet pokeball coasters.
9. Knitted beanie.
10. Crochet pineapple shawl

For all the new heroin chic era is about women becoming smaller and more fragile (and less capable of working—not least because of the long-term health impacts of losing too much weight), it is also about women being pushed out of the workforce because they are expected to keep up this appearance of non-labor as unpaid labor
Fuck it. Bitch-Stitching that fucking Target bag. I have counted out rows and estimated size. I'll report back.
For now, you need worsted weight yarn, a 4.5 hook, and rage.
Hour #1:
The worsted weight I'm using is thinner than the original yarn, but the measurements are coming out just fine. It leaves a little space between stitches on the bottom part. I expected this as the original bag is 100% cotton and likely made from dish cotton/kitchen cotton (aka Lily Sugar and Cream or similar). That would make the stitches press together a bit more on the 4.5 mm hook.
I'm taking a break between every hour-long section, which is definitely more than any artist making these for Target is likely getting.
HOUR TWO:
AND HOUR THREE:
We are officially going into less than $10 an hour in labor if you're selling it for $30. Shocking no one.
Calling it a night on this particular project. I shall pick up this bitch stitch tomorrow.
HOUR FOUR
Literally on the next to last row of the open stitch rows. If i were ONLY stitching and not able to also do something else, I could have knocked out the entire rest of the body of the bag in this hour, but I get to tweak my pace as I see fit. Which I assure you the people making these for sub-par wages in 12-hour work day stretches* don't get to do.
*This statement based on the following information: Target (and other big box retailers) import most often from China. While the government claims Chinese workers work a standard 40-hour week, this is widely understood to be bullshit. Chinese factory workers typically work what is known as 996. 9 am - 9 pm, 6 days a week. China DOES have labor laws, but they are regularly flouted by businesses, and the government doesn't give two fucks about its citizens, so they don't enforce shit.
I thought that crochet stuff was often done as cottage industry-type work, giving the companies even more ways to cut costs (not just by not needing to provide a workspace, but because it's an excuse to pay even less.)
I assumed piecework at home when looking into modern crochet lace, tape lace, and cutwork and I can confidently say: I have no idea
I’ve tried to look into it multiple times and haven’t been able to confirm anything either way. Some places advertise “flexibility” for “working moms” (what you’re talking about) and other factory environments advertise “facilities” (which implies on site).
But I haven’t even be able to confirm the companies manufacturing crochet lace (and I imagine it’s just as opaque with other forms of crochet) so I’d lean towards the grey economy. It’d also be difficult to keep ALL evidence of crocheting off their footage and factory images if women were doing the work onsite.
And if it IS piecework as part of the grey economy, we are very likely overestimating the pay of the crocheters.
Personally I think, given the time period, Heathcliff being Romani makes the most sense. Especially adding in the whole “white dad eventually adopted him for ???” reasons theory. It would also turn the conspiracy theory and anti-Romani trope about Romani people kidnapping children on its head, which seems like something Bronte would want to do, no matter how racistly she actually accomplished it.
If someone who *isn’t* Romani is being cast for Heathcliff, I nominate a (much younger) Keanu Reeves.
And if we’re not going with the Romani/half-sibling theory (which is problematic in its own right) I think what an adaptation actually needs to focus on is someone being too hot for people to comfortably and consequence-free be racist to, which is where the Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba, Oscar Isaac, etc fancasts come in. He’s got to be devastatingly handsome with smoldering eyes. Most importantly, he must be actually Brown (instead of having bought Brown features)
But I’m personally of the opinion that you’re much better off adapting different aspects of the book into different adaptations, which will get you much closer to a comprehensive adaptation than trying to cram it all in to an adaptation. Wuthering Heights is one of a handful of books that could be improved by having several adaptations released in the same year, especially since all the Heathcliffs could be a different race. One could adapt it as a straight thriller, another as comedy, still another as a tragic and yet foreseeably doomed Gothic romance.
not every mutual fits neatly into an archetypal medievalism but there are some mutuals that im like yeah addressing you as “my liege” would come strangely naturally

Please never recommend me dystopian fiction because the only book from that genre I’ve ever read that hasn’t been like “and textile workers in real life deserve the abuse they suffer! Because they’re women! And they suck and that’s the natural state of women’s being! Sucking!” And actually explored clothing as sociology, expression, and function with any real curiosity is Divergent
I’m just no longer open to trusting new authors to stab my beliefs in the back
