Oh how I yearn for a simpler time, when a young man would simply give his paramour an intricately crafted wooden spoon to show his affection and ability to provide for their future family, especially if they ever ran out of spoons

It has come to my attention that not everyone knows what lovespoons are.

This is a lovespoon. They’re found in several cultures worldwide, particularly in Scandinavia, but most famously in Wales (that photo is a Welsh lovespoon) and, from at least the 17th century, they were given as gifts by a suitor to his intended lady. They’re supposed to be carved from one block of wood, and decorated with various symbols which have slightly nuanced meanings, all basically a variation on ‘you’re rad, want to get wed?’

Because marriage in poor, rural parts of Wales was often more akin to cohabitation at the time (i.e. you didn’t really have a big ol’ legal ceremony, you just sort of said ‘we’re married now’ and shacked up together) a lovespoon could act as a wedding ring of sorts; you’d put your goshdarn heart and soul into carving it and you’d give it to the dame you sought, and if she accepted the spoon, then you were essentially wed, or at least bound together in a meaningful way. It’s assumed that they were initially supposed to be at least somewhat functional, because people did in fact eat with wooden spoons back in the day, but they’re now purely decorative. And hoo boy, can they be decorative. These are some of the ones on display at St Fagans Museum:

It has also come to my attention that people keep reblogging this with the assumption that these are all Scandinavian lovespoons. They are not; these are all Welsh. Wales is not in Scandinavia. These are not Viking crafts!! I mentioned Scandinavia in the above post as an aside, but the rest of the info in the post above is specific to Wales.

In the interests of not hogging all the spoonfuls of joy, here is a Norwegian wedding spoon:

It’s super goddamn cool and I love it, but it is quite different to the Welsh lovespoon tradition, and I think it does both cultures a disservice to conflate them. For one thing, Norwegian wedding spoons were generally given by the groom to the bride on their wedding day or during the wedding ritual, and you’ll notice that the symbolism on the spoons is very different. For another thing, they generally consist of two spoons linked by a carved wooden chain, rather than one spoon with a carved handle. I don’t actually know if the groom would carve these himself or if they would be commissioned and made by a craftsman; either way, it’s too cool for school.

Like the Welsh variant, they’re either carved out of one piece of wood or the spoons are made from a separate piece and the chain is made from another, which is a feat of woodworking that I cannot even fathom, because look how intricate that chain is! Hoo boy!

I had to look these up, because I am Welsh and not Norwegian, but it seems that they may have formed part of the wedding ceremony in which the bride and groom ate their first meal as a married couple, which is so rad that I cannot cope.

actually now that I’m thinking about it, Bruce showing up to the Watchtower last minute in one of Nightwing’s domino masks because he can’t wear the cowl for some reason and everyone (bizarrely) assumes that the new, handsome (if slightly older) vigilante must be a New Bat and maybe even a partner of Nightwing’s and Bruce isn’t correcting them because he’s trying to avoid drawing attention to his face/voice/mannerisms outside of the cowl (or maybe he’s injured enough he can’t talk too) and they start talking to him about Batman until Clark shows up and is like wait a minute…why do I know that heartbeat who IS this Nightwing lookalike…is so funny to me

why doesn’t someone recognize him by the suit sans cowl? maybe the cowl attaches to the cape so he can’t wear either. maybe everyone thinks the bat costumes kind of look the same (sometimes they do depending on lighting). maybe he figured no one would bother him if he looked vaguely like another Bat. maybe he’s not even in a full suit, just plainclothes and a domino because for some reason Clark called a priority 1 meeting and he’s still actively bleeding and recuperating and this is the first time he’s been out of bed for three days.

imagine you’re a young woman in Gotham set on revenge against your cheating ex boyfriend so you track down his expensive, souped up car to some club downtown and start beating the shit out of it with a baseball bat in the back alley. mid-process some guy comes up behind you and is like “nah don’t hit the windows, bodywork is way more expensive to repair” and starts giving you tips on how to destroy this man’s car in a way that will defy even the best insurance adjuster and luxury parts repair shop and when it’s all said and done and the stupid, expensive car is a broken piece of shit (just like the ex) you turn around. the man who’s been giving you advice is standing there, smoking, eyebrows slightly raised, very impressed. he’s kinda handsome, dressed up like he was in the club actually. you ask him if he works there. he snorts and says “something like that,” and heads back inside with a snarky two-fingered salute to you.

it turns out that man was Jason Todd, AKA Red Hood, current owner of the Iceberg Lounge.

word gets around gotham (somehow, some way) that the Bats all know a variety of rare or difficult languages, including several varieties of sign language.

the Gotham PD language line/translation services are woefully underfunded and never show up on time on a good day.

cue an enterprising sergeant on night desk duty routinely using Gordon’s bat signal to put out a request for language services in the middle of the night.

the kicker? Batman or one of his kids usually — sometimes — shows up. more frequently than the actual services, at least.

bruce wayne maintains a presence on all conspiracy theory boards with the screen name BruceWayneIsTheBatman and all his posts have titles like “BRUCE WAINE IS BAT-MAN INDISPUTABLE PROOF” and it’s just a picture of Bruce Wayne from the back next to a picture of Batman from behind and they both have the contours of their butt drawn on in a shitty MSPaint red line (note: Bruce is in a suit and Batman has a cape, neither of their butts are clearly discernible) and the quote “THE BUTTS MATCH!!! THE FACTS DON’T LIE!!!!!” and he makes at least three of these posts a day, and “Bruce Wayne is the Batman” becomes a meme a la “Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer” and he gets asked about it on a talk show and he laughs uproariously at the idea and Stephen Colbert just HAPPENS to have a batman mask under the desk and they do a bit together where Bruce Wayne puts on the mask and walks around saying things like “excuse me, bank robbers, can I perhaps offer you some money to stop you robbing this bank?” and “I say, cease and desist your criminal behavior or I’ll have my butler ask you to leave” and the audience is LOSING THEIR MINDS laughing at the idea of this pampered rich guy taking on the Joker on a bi-weekly basis and then anyone who suggests “Bruce Wayne is Batman” in earnest gets met with mocking “oh man do the butts match” comments

And after an hour of looking for Tony the other Avengers finally find him decked out in black, gray, purple, and white; talking animatedly with similarly clad people while stuffing his face with cake.

Asexual Tony Stark who is very proud about his sexuality and works very hard to bring it the visibility it deserves despite the hundreds of people trying to identity police him because he’s had so much sex in the past.
