A lot has already been said about how Teach manages to beat Rodgers during the keelhauling, but what I noticed this rewatch is that Jack Rackham also manages to beat him.

After Teach survives the first go around the ship, Rodgers says "again" quietly, with self assurance. He's disappointed that teach survived one go, but is clearly not surprised, sending a man under the ship a second time is clearly not uncharted territory for him.

And as he orders this he glances around the ship and is caught and pauses when he sees Jack's look.

And what catches him completely off guard is that there is no fear here. Jack has clearly figured out what the plan is, he almost certainly knows he is next, as he keeps almost this exact look when he is taken after Teach is assumed dead.

What this look is , is disgust. Jack Rackham, Pirate Captain and enemy to all mankind, is looking down on Woodes Rodger, because this show of force is so grotesque. Rackham meets Rodger's eyes, doesn't break away, and this is what rattles him.

The next time Rodger's orders "again", he shouts it, because being judged by Rackham is getting to him, and this fear is what makes him shoot Blackbeard after the third go. Blackbeard endures this torture and that is impressive to the point of being awe inspiring yes, but it is Rodger's inability to weather the judgement and disdain of a pirate that makes him lose.

You know what? I do have a problem with the casting of The Odyssey. How dare you cast anyone else as Odysseus when Oscar Isaac exists in the world.

I don't wanna @ anyone because I understand how fast things seem to move in today's landscape of streaming shows dropping entire seasons in one day, and networks pumping out new series constantly to try to attract more subscribers with no intent to actually maintain those shows over time but I just saw someone self-deprecatingly lament that they are still thinking about a show that ended almost a year ago, making fan art and playlists for it, and I want to be very clear:

you can still create fanworks when it comes to old media!! PLEASE do!! there are always going to be new fans who will appreciate it, and veteran fans who are dying for new content and new perspectives. also, less than a year is NOTHING. the original Star Trek series was on TV six decades ago and there are still people losing their minds over it, writing stories and reblogging gifsets daily, and that's only one example.

a fandom lasts as long as there are people who love a thing, even if it's only a handful of people. love what you love and write and draw and make gifs and playlists about it!

Correction: it's not the Medicis who run the Dublin fried chicken shops, but the direct decendants of the enemies of the Medici; the Borgias. The chain is called Borza and is better known for fish and chips. They moved to Ireland in the early 20th century. They are also said to have introduced the deep fried Mars bar from Scotland to Ireland.

The Borgias, among the most feared and reviled families in European history, running a fish 'n chips shop with deep fried Mars bars is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. It's like something from a D&D campaign where they decided to completely change genres.
