for the uninitiated
getting lost in boston is fun because I turned around on a street corner three times and some guy yelled "hey stupid! the bus is that way!" very helpful interaction and accurate insult, 10/10 no notes
one time I walked around a building a couple times looking for a bathroom and this guy went "this bitch thinks she's on a merrygoround, where the fuck are you tryna go? bathroom? one floor down to the right behind the door that says bathroom."
My very first time in Boston. I was absolutely miserable, trying to drag my giant suitcase up a lengthy set of stairs in the pouring rain. This guy who had already reached the top looked back at me with the most pure expression of disgust Iâve ever seen in anyoneâs eyes, marched back down the stairs, grabbed my suitcase, carried it to the top, left it there for me, and walked away without ever saying a word. I think about him often.
For the people in the notes going "why is Boston like this": a) the insults are a way to show you have no ulterior motives when helping someone (and don't need to be thanked or repaid), and b) Boston was settled by the Irish
also the Italians. mixing Irish and Italian sociocultural attitudes had the effect of multiplying the Sass Levels by the power of infinity, in the sense that you get all of the clever dry wit of the Irish and all of the bitchy gossipy condensation of the Italians rolled into one very stereotypically overly-friendly American package.
also worth noting that who you are to them doesnât matter. theyâll talk to strangers like that and will also talk to their best friends like that. theyâre just Like That.
More from the notes:
Iâm starting a rumor
every year small towns and indigenous communities across canada are burnt to nothing by horrific wildfires and americans go on the internet to complain about it and blame us bc the smoke has spread to their state. iâm so tired.
go yell at mark carney or your own local politicians about climate change and urge them to do more to stop it. the namaygoosisagagun first nation had their community destroyed today. you can find a link to donate to them here. donate to your local food bank. go to the beach next week when the smoke clears and you donât have to think about it anymore while the people whoâs lives have been destroyed will have to pick up the pieces and try to move forward when we are already in a huge cost of living crisis across the country.
rbing with other places you can donate to to support those impacted by the fires!
true north aid (an organization aimed at providing support to remote/northern indigenous people in canada)
canadian red cross wildfire fund
ontario spca and humane society (links to their donate page specifically aimed at supporting pets and animals in areas impacted by the fires)
and the anishinabek nationâs page where you can donate to support the namaygoosisagagun nation who had their land destroyed by the fires is still accepting donations
i think the marvel vs dc conversation is bad because they're very different animals and i think its very obvious in how they approach the avengers and the justice league, even if you compare it between dceu and mcu, because at the end of the day superheroes in marvel seem to be allied with the governemtn regardless of their cause, like shield and avengers seem to be deeply connected in both fucntion and system because they're lead by a military guy and then the league in itself is funny because literally no one gets paid, they consider it volunteer work, that they operate outside of the planet so they would not be beholden to one state
the Avengers: you don't understand, we HAVE to work with the government. to protect people.
the JL, in their satellite floating just outside of Earth's jurisdiction: lmao ok
In 2003/2004, Marvel and DC made a JLA and Avengers crossover comic (titled both JLA/Avengers and Avengers/JLA depending on which issue you read).
The plot is irrelevant to the point of this post, but basically the various heroes need to collect artifacts of power from each other's universe (such a Green Lantern power battery, the Book of Eternity, the Medusa Mask, the Cosmic Cube, the Infinity Gauntlet, the Ultimate Nullifier and so on) to prevent the powers that be from destroying one of the two universes.
When the JLA go to the Marvel Universe, they're shocked by the Avengers' failure to improve their Earth's condition - the Flash gets attacked by an anti-mutant mob, the JLA is horrified at the destruction of the island of Genosha. Superman actually gets very angry about how the heroes of the Marvel Universe have - in the JLA's eyes - failed humanity and let the world go to hell.
When the Avengers go the DC Universe, they get surprised at how "futuristic" the cities are (compared to home), how heroes are respected and treated - there's a Flash Museum! People ask for their autographs! There's a superhero themed restaurant! - and the Avengers become convinced that the Justice League are basically fascists who force a kind of hero-worship.
(Eventually, things get cleared up, the Avengers and JLA work together to defeat the true enemy and there's even an incredibly awesome moment of Superman wielding Captain America's shield and Mjölnir to defeat the bad guy - a nice way of pleasing both fan bases!)
Anyway, the point is you can't really compare the two universes. They're too different on their fundamental level, on their basic assumptions about how the world works.
And the comics? They're aware of this.
Every single person I know who did football in high school, without exception, has a chronic injury. Many regret what it's done to their knees and back, even major organs like the brain.
There is no serious legislative push to ban high school football.
Also, like, if you want to talk about social pressure on minors to undertake activities that will result in regrettable, irreversible damage to their bodies:
No one, *ever*, tried to persuade me to transition.
My gym teacher tried to persuade me to try out for the football team almost every single day that I was in junior high.
#i firmly believe that the reason why concussions and brain damage in general#are not taken nearly as seriously as they should be#is because of football#if we take concussions and brain trauma seriously then we have to acknowledge the risks that children are undertaking at even#high school level football#but we can't do that#because the kids need to play football in high school so they can play football in college so they can join the NFL#This time I'm really gonna queue it.
Not a single one of my wife's fingers is completely straight. If you look at them closely -- which I have, many times, over the past 22 years -- you can see where they were broken, over and over, taped in place, and where she just kept fucking playing.
When I first met her, she used to joke about how her coach said, "I could get more than that out of a pig if I kicked it hard enough," and that was the nicest fucking thing he said. Two decades later, she's like, "Yeah, that man verbally and physically abused all of us for years."
There is at least one football game she played in high school that she simply doesn't remember, because she was a linebacker. She got a concussion. She got up and kept playing... or so she's told. She doesn't remember, because she had a fucking concussion and they let her keep playing.
I hate football so much. It ruined her back, her knees, fucked up her hands... everyone was so obsessed with how tall she was, how broad-shouldered. No one ever pushed her to transition, but I fucking wish someone had at least suggested it. That would have hurt her so much less than FUCKING FOOTBALL. Like, it would have been actually beneficial to her.
I heard that one of the actual reasons that organizations like the NFL have tried so hard to downplay CTE and other injuries like it is because theyâre terrified that moms will refuse to let their children play football anymore and that entire massive industry will come collapsing down because of it.
That fucking scans.
