You gotta be really publicly passionate about things if you want your friends to text you. Bc people will forget to text you because they’re human. But if you’re really openly the friend who loves identifying ants your friends will think of you when they see ants. And they’ll text you “what ant is this [blurry photo]”. And then they’ll ask you how you’ve been and we should get coffee sometime. But if they don’t know what you love they’ll never know what you like
And then when the ant convention is in town they’ll be like dude… we should go to the ant convention. But they would never think to go if they didn’t know u loved ants
And sometimes you need to ask them to go to the ant convention. But you Will not get anywhere hiding your passions
inspired by a rant i was going on elsewhere bc someone tweeted something very stupid and uninformed about hamlet and it got my back up as someone who took two single-text-focus english literature courses in college and they were on wuthering heights and hamlet, i now put it to all of you on here:
what's "your" shakespeare play?
hamlet
macbeth
the tempest
merchant of venice
midsummer night's dream
twelfth night
richard iii
othello
julius caesar
king lear
another not listed (specify in tags) (i really just put my own top 10 here nbd)
i have no particular feelings about any shakespeare play/results tag
Question out of curiosity:
Which of the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid is your favourite?
I’ve read at least 2 and like The Iliad best
I’ve read at least 2 and like The Odyssey best
I’ve read at least 2 and like The Aeneid best
I’ve only read The Iliad, and I liked it
I’ve only read The Iliad, and I disliked it
I’ve only read The Odyssey, and I liked it
I’ve only read The Odyssey, and I disliked it
I’ve only read The Aeneid, and I liked it
I’ve only read The Aeneid, and I disliked it
I haven’t read any of them
For the purposes of this question, “read” means read at least half of an unabridged or minimally-abridged translation (or read it in the original, if we’ve got classical scholars here).
linguists measure the speed of languages by how many syllables are articulated per second or per minute.
1. Japanese:
Japanese is the fastest recorded language. It has a rate of 7.84 syllables per second.
2. Spanish:
Spanish is right behind Japanese and is nearly as fast with a rate of 7.82 syllables per second.
3. French
French lags just a little far behind with a rate of 7.18 syllables per second.
4. Italian
Italian is relatively slower than Spanish and French with a rate of 6.99 syllables per second.
5. English
English is among the slower languages with a rate of 6.19 syllables per second.
6. German
Before last is German with a speed of 5.97 syllables per second.
7. Mandarin
Mandarin is the slowest recorded language with a rate as low as 5.18 syllables per second.
So this is something I’ve read about!
While these languages are all spoken at different rates, each will communicate about the same amount of information within a minute. That’s because the speed a language is spoken is inversely proportional to how meaning dense it is relative to its syllabary- basically, the more syllables it takes to communicate a concept in a certain language, the faster that language will be spoken on average.
Compare these sentences in Japanese, Spanish, English, and Mandarin.
まだ何もなかった時、神は天と地を造りました。 (mada nanimo nakatta toki, kami wa ten to chi o tsukurimashita. = ~23-24 syllables, depending on how you categorize ‘syllables’ in Japanese) Dios, en el principio, creó los cielos y la tierra. (= 19 syllables) In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (= 15 syllables) 起初, 神创造天地。 (qǐchū, shén chuàngzào tiāndì. = ~7 syllables)
All are translations of the same line, and communicate the same amount of information. However, Japanese takes more than three times as many syllables as Mandarin to do so.
This correlates directly to how much meaning is in each syllable. In Japanese, only 5-7 of the spoken syllables out of 23-24 have any meaning on their own (including all particles). In Spanish, 5 out of 19. English, 7 out of 15. In Mandarin, each syllable has its own meaning, if modified by others.
Time has a good article about this particular subject, actually citing this same study (which originally included Vietnamese as well.)

I could watch this scene over and over—the way John describes Harold, knowing full well that he can hear everything, and how absolutely delighted Harold is.
Those two are killing me.

Higgledy piggledy, turning and turning as gyres are widening, centers unheld,
things fall apart and there’s anarchy everywhere; falcons fly freely and can’t be compelled.
Dimming the tide there is blood in the water and everywhere customs of innocence drowned.
Held by the worst is a fervent intensity; lacking conviction the best run aground.
Surely there must be some kind of apocalypse; surely epiphany must be at hand!
Visions unbidden from Spiritus Mundi of something awakening out on the sand:
Head of a man with a leonine frame and a pitiless gaze that’s as blank as the sun;
sleep became nightmare by passage of centuries long before eons of slumber were done.
Higgledy piggledy, beast of antiquity, imminent, just as the prophecies warn,
shambling slowly but revelatorily, slouching towards Bethlehem, there to be born.
How does Chinese censorship & crackdown on danmei affect your enjoyment of danmei?
censorship makes it difficult for me to enjoy danmei at all
I want Hao Yi Xing & TGCF live action😭
too bad about censorship but I'm content with my danmei books
censorship is fine by me

I feel bad for people who’ve never experienced a corn maze bc it’s not even fun but you just have to do it
I'd like to reblog this with some tags and comments bc I've really appreciated reading them
people who get what I mean:
people who have found a way to have fun in the corn maze but who I'm a little worried about:
person who we are going to put in the corn:
"this is an inaccurate adaptation" okay but is it good "this didn't happen in the book" does it make sense in the context of the new work though "they totally changed the plot" and is the new one good or bad "it's completely different" not what I asked "they changed all the stuff I like" then I get why you wouldn't be into it but I'm asking about its own artistic merits "this character is meant to be blonde" I couldn't give less of a fuck
there are places in the world today that are experiencing 40°C for the first time in recorded history. of course there's no way to know whether chucking billionaires into volcanos will appease the sun god but i feel we're doing the scientific method a disservice if we don't at least try

For the ‘do own a cat option’ it counts if you have ever owned a cat not just of you have one now
I think it’s actually iconic that even though Xie Lian lost his entire family and kingdom and friends and everything that felt familiar 800 years ago and he’s been healing and growing from that ever since, he still never even considers forgiving and reconnecting with his technically alive cousin. He still fucking hates that bitch.

There's something about poj for me where nearly single scene just looks so overpolished and staged, to the point where it has been utterly distracting from the pig slaughter scene onward! Some conversations and scenes also have me going 🧐🤔 screenwriter and director, I'm not sure this is as charming as you seem to think it is.
