So annoying to me when people think citing the actions of FICTIONAL female characters counts as evidence that femininity doesn't hold women back. "Omg, she can run and fight with heels and a dress! Animal welfare and animal rights are different things; it is good and normal for humans to be slightly anthropocentric while acknowledging our role within the greater ecosystem. Factory farming should indeed be dismantled- I want all animals harvested for food/leather/fur/bones/organs to have full and rich lives with as little suffering as possible before they're harvested. But it is not anti-leftist to live as a predator within the ecosystem. It is not more wrong for humans to eat salmon than it is for bears and eagles to do so.

i used to work in a vegan restaurant and it had basically all the same labor and management problems as the other restaurants i worked at that served meat. obviously. because it was a business in a capitalist system so obviously theres an economic incentive to pay workers the bare minimum and charge customers the maximum you can get away with.

in fact, the restaurant used the vegan identity and environmentalism as fuel for their marketing in quite cynical ways. at the same time they had a deal with Whole Foods (implicated in prison labor allegations btw) to source ingredients, meaning that there were transcontinentally shipped produce lol. for example we used frozen blueberries that were product of Chile. for a restaurant in the pacific northwest region in the united states of america. there are blueberry farms in oregon, washington, etc. But it’s cheaper to exploit south american farms than get local blueberries i guess. (which still by and large exploit the labor of migrant farmworkers from mexico and south and central america, but i digress)

i was vegetarian at the time and i had a lot of deep conversations with my coworkers and manager and the conclusion i came away with is that veganism is merely a cultural practice and is not inherently “leftist” in any way. if you consider human lives equal to animal lives i think that is not compatible with a clear-sighted materialist analysis of the world we live in. its practically a religious belief. which, like, okay, you can be religious, you can have irrational beliefs, but that’s not what “”””leftism”””” is about. that’s not really what any socialist or communist theory is about. it could be syncretized with socialist theory, but it would always merely be an ill-fitting addendum.

Agave is a main food source for many bats, but no, harvesting excess honey from bees that over produce it is the problem. If bees regularly have a large surplus of honey they swarm, the hive splits and some leave to start a new hive. Problem is that most bees don't survive this process because it makes them vulnerable to other environmental factors. So encouraging farming and over consumption of agave and stopping the consumption of honey, you're actually harming two different populations of pollinators.

"Vegan leather" is mostly plastic, which breaks down and sheds microplasics. Contributing to the ever growing landfill and contaminated water supply issues we have. Meanwhile cow hide is a natural byproduct from the meat industry, and real leather can last decades if taken care of. A single cow can feed 2 families of 4 for a year, and that leather can go towards making belts, boots, gloves and jackets that last decades.

If you want to actually support ethical food production and animal welfare do your research on where your food comes from. Look into local farms and their practices.

Because in a normal pregnancy the baby is >50% related to the mother. In surrogacy, an unrelated egg is used, which means entirely foreign biological material in the woman's body.

Pregnancy is basically a 9 month-long battle between the woman and the embryo; a "healthy" full-term pregnancy can only happen if, essentially, the women's body doesn't realize that the embryo is there, because if it does it will attack it with the woman's immune system as a "foreign body." This is the main reason the placenta exists, to shield the embryo from the woman's immune system (along with nutrient absorption obviously).

The closer the embryo is to the woman, the less likely an immune response will be triggered; this applies to gestational surrogacy, but also relates to things like the sex of the embryo and the embryo's blood type. So, the more genetically different an embryo is from its mother, the higher the overall risk of triggering an immune response, which then increases the likelihood of a smorgasbord of complications given the strain that an immune response causes both the mother and the embryo.

this is just personal observation, but all the people I know who had surrogates (which is only 3 so who really knows), their babies are so so sick all the time. Like months premature, weeks in NICU, multiple hospital stays in infancy, now constantly sick as toddlers, can’t keep weight on, lowest percentiles of height / weight, etc etc. Literally every one of them.

and maybe it’s just a coincidence but maybe you aren’t supposed to implant your eggs in another woman and assume her body will grow a healthy baby for you? not to even talk about what it does to an infant to be forcibly removed from their mother at birth….

i’ve been watching wimbledon recently and one thing that stood out to me was how some of the world’s best athletes (female) don’t look incredibly toned, many have quite a bit of body fat and don’t have much visible muscle definition

and it’s because a bit of body fat is advantageous to women, and trying to emulate the lean and toned look of male bodies, who have different hormones to us, or trying to emulate starved instagram influencers, often comes at the expense of our health

ngl i’ve been feeling a bit like shit recently because even though i go to the gym, i’m not toned, and i struggle with being toned because lowering your body fat % a lot of the time requires eating in a calorie deficit, i.e. depriving yourself of food to some degree

it makes me feel better looking at elite athletes who are so strong and fit and it’s wild how even they don’t look like instagram influencers or even gym influencers

i'm so tired of people excusing the fact that women somehow aren't responsible for patriarchy because they are. Yes, men are the main perpetrators but it only keeps happening because women continue to enable this type of behavior. How many times do you see mothers forcing their daughters/teenage girls to 'cover up' so that their male partner doesn't leave them for their daughter? Or what about all the times women force their toddlers into beauty pagents/dance shows where they're completely aware the main audience for this type of show is older men??? Not even to mention women who force beauty standards on their daughters, like making them shave their legs, put on makeup, extreme diets the moment they hit puberty and begin developing like a human being. There's so much more I could mention but that's at the top of my mind.

Obviously you can't deny that these beauty standards were set by men, but so many women participate and enable them. Stop blaming this on 'female socialization' and 'grooming by the patriarchy'. women today have ENDLESS many resources to learn how to not be abusive towards their daughters. These women have the option to get their daughters into a safer environment but they don't.

Ugandan Coffee Growers Shrug Off Drought Thanks to Regenerative Agriculture

Uganda's oldest and largest licensed coffee exporter contributed their in-country expertise to the coalition to establish "model farms."

Due to where it is typically grown, coffee farms are particularly vulnerable to damage from erosion when rain comes either too intensely or too sparsely. A coalition assembled by the Global Environment Facility set up test farms to help provide local coffee farmers in Uganda with the resources to apply regenerative agricultural techniques to their local farming conditions.

The results have led to better yields, healthier soil that is less prone to erosion, and more stable income for farmers.
