of course it’s fine for a socialist to praise obama as an effective politician. we should have respect for skilled enemies. we want the world we build to be as unquestionable and resolute as the ones the capitalists have now. that will mean learning from their successes.

i think something you have to make peace with to avoid this sort of left-moralism is the fact most of the major villains of our time are not going to face justice. they, almost every one, will die comfortably in their beds from old age. our political struggle is not going to move along fast enough to change that.

which is fine, since the goal is not to punish a few vile war criminals in our time but to create a world they don’t rule - a changed world for all times.

if you can’t accept that, if you need a fair world where everyone gets what’s coming to them, you need to look to religion not politics. (and i can recommend a good religion. lightly used.) but nothing can make these dreams of glorious hague trials or whatever revolutionary justice you might prefer a real fixture of our world. it’s incumbent on all of us to stop daydreaming of a world where we are the arbiters of these questions, and start making the world where we are.
