A niche literary review magazine asking a literary translator to comment on an adaptation of a work of literature is not "bizarre" or "a hit piece".

That literary translator talking about the thematic and character decisions in the adaptation, which is her area of expertise, and not the cinematography, which is not, does not mean the review has nothing insightful to say about the film.

That literary translator pointing out that, while the director likes to associate her name with his work - to the point that people think he is adapting her translation specifically - he is not actually engaging with any of the themes she cares about, is not "emotional and defensive".

There is no such thing as a perfect or complete review. They are opinion pieces. Each reviewer focuses on different things. This is fine and good and part of a healthy ecosystem of cultural journalism. Saying you think her review is stupid because you're "just a lowly film watcher, not a poem reader" and feel judged is... Wild? She's comparing the film to the poem in a magazine for which she covers ancient poetry! You are not the audience for this review if you don't care about its relationship to the poem.

I feel like I'm seeing a lot of people insulted that Wilson called Nolan's film a fun summer blockbuster rather than high art, but it has objectively been released to function as a summer blockbuster, and there's nothing wrong with admitting that? She's not calling viewers lowbrow for liking it, she's calling Nolan boring for taking out the weird uncomfortable bits of key characterisations in order to make his film more accessible.

in addition to being criticized for not wanting to have children, you must also get scolded if you don't want to be around children. somehow the children that are created and abused are your fault and your problem to solve. if you say that creating children is the creation of a being to experience harm and that this can be avoided, you are a eugenicist. if you cultivate childfree spaces, you are abandoning children (who did not need to be created) to abuse. if you decide that you don't want to take on additional trauma for yourself because you don't want to subject yourself to the abuse parents inflict on their children, you are a monster who is dehumanizing children. never the fault of the parents.

"Bitches" and "women" are used interchangeably in so many contexts. It's everywhere in top 40 songs. It's wild to claim that it's not a gendered word at all, esp when the literal meaning is "female dog". Like if u don't care about using slurs, then just admit that. But don't try to pretend like it's not one. The fact that it's widespread and normalized doesn't make it not a slur, it just shows how deep sexism is still ingrained in our culture.

I would also like to add that "anyone can be called one" isn't really true either, because calling a man a bitch is different from calling a woman a bitch. When a woman is called that, it's because she was mean, voicing her opinion or saying no. When a man is called that, it means he is weak (men call each other a little bitch to mean coward) and they're comparing him to what they think a woman is, aka weak. It always mean woman, they just don't wanna admit it.
