32 years ago I met the love of my life in a Quantum Leap AOL chatroom. After a single long distance phone call we knew, and 32 years ago she left a charmed life in SoCal to live with me in Boston.
(This is our first holiday card pic from '94. I no longer resemble that child with the rosy cheeks so I'm comfy with sharing it.)
Fandom was threaded through both of our lives from start to finish. It's a chipped jewel in a tarnished setting. I have lots to say about that, but not this minute.
A passion for old men fucking despite their age difference paved the way for 25 years, two months, and 13 days of the best life I will ever have lived.
I was trying to get her into Schitt's Creek before she died, but it wasn't her thing. (I haven't been able to hear 'Simply the Best' for 7 years.) I'd like to think she would've loved OFMD...

A huge thank you to all the people re-blogging art from the early days of the show. I wasn't in the fandom then, and there's just all this amazing stuff that I have never seen.

Something that I think we need to call out more in fandoms is the blatant racism towards black female characters, especially when they are love interests. I feel that everytime there is a black female love interest, the fandom completely neglects her and rushes to ship the MC with another character that is most of the time white. And then racist fans try to hide behind āoh well I just donāt ship them!ā and itās pathetic. Adding onto this I think that a lot of ppl in fandoms try to deny/ignore that female black characters can be feminine. People try to default being black as an inherently masculine thing when not only is it not true but it is just downright racist. Let black characters be fun and feminine and let them be loved!!!
If youāre not watching OFMD through an anti-colonialism lens, you might misunderstand what is happening between Ed and Izzy.
Itās white imperialism and supremacy in microcosm. Ed shooting Izzy is paralleled in Jackie poisoning the British.
Itās fighting back against the oppressor, and OFMD shows it to be correct.
Itās all there, you just have to see it.

No, āBlackbeardā isnāt āproblematicā and ātoxicā, but Ed is someone damaged by a problematic and toxic world.
For those at the back who canāt quite hear, he has the triple disadvantage of being brown-indigenous, poor, and queer in a world where the dominant culture is underpinned by white patriarchal hegemony, and really starting to gain strength.
He is a highly-intelligent, sensitive and loving individual who has repressed so much of himself he has fragmented into parts.
He is persistently trodden upon by the jackboot of colonialism. He has to exist within a pirate subculture to even begin to use some of his talents and climb a hierarchical structure; and he is still repressed by white men within that who think they know better how he should behave than he does.
He is defined via racist stereotypes by both the imperialists and those closest to him. Only one ever sees Edās personhood, and he loses that individual for a time. When at his lowest, he desperately tries to claw himself out of the pit through self-care and a reframing of his identity, only to be told he is better off dead if he cannot be what white men say he should be.
Then he breaks.
If you blame Ed for his breakdown and for fighting back, then you are blaming the victim. You are no better than the bullies we saw in world politics this week who claim to be the hurt party when they carry all of the cards. Who try to manipulate an already-victim into doing what they want, and cry āfoulā when that individual airs grievances, or attempts to show agency outside of what they see fit. Who punch down shouting ācrookā, āpunkā and ādictatorā because someone just wants their freedom from imperialist aggression.
You need to connect the dots. You need to get it.

jic youre wondering how today is going for them a little while ago ed noticed a biggish hole in his underwear and wanted to see if he could push one of his balls through and as it turns out he could but pulling it out again is proving to be a somewhat different story
in the process of pushing the waistband of his undies down his hips he realized he could just barely bend his leg enough to extract it from its leg hole and then get the other out of its own leg hole and maybe the dramatic reduction in tension would do something to help the ball hole stretch a little bit. well it didnt and now hes just standing there winnie the pooh style with an entire pair of underpants hanging off one single nut
