had the idea of "hey what if leg's reflection in a mirror was his reflection, despite whatever louis was doing while piloting him" and this came out of it
course theres like no mirrors in oakhurst but still. stilllll uwu. maybe theres a few in the castle tucked away or something. maybe the reflection was normal until legs got turned. maybe only humans can see leg's "real" reflection.
anyways the initial drawing comp idea was from the mirror scene in van helsing, and theres a reference to a historical painting in here too if anybody spots it :D
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

i don’t wanna seem mean or yucking other people’s yum but.. seeing other people describe Sam as genuinely evil to his core puts a really bad taste in my mouth. Can’t describe it other than being ableist to a very clearly mentally ill coded character. also seeing Sam as evil/unable to feel empathy really really misunderstands his character. arguing that Sam isn’t mentally ill also doesn’t magically solve anything from what I just said, it more reads as closing your eyes to canon. again I’m not the ruler of what headcanons you can or cannot have but I REALLY thought we left this kind of black and white thinking in 2020.
the sanders sides fandom is and always has been a blast because it's a setting in which no ships will ever be canon, ever. and you'd think that would bring down the mood but instead it's created a "fuck it, we ball" energy the likes of which no other fandom i've seen has been able to replicate since

so where are these freaks coming into this conversation from? well, it's session 4, so avid just had his encounter with shelby while legs just had his trust exercise with owen. both trying to speak to the castle vamps with uh. different outcomes 👍
avid comes home fiddling around in merp manor, presumably already looking for flint and steel to burn shelby's house down (totally normal part of grieving, I'm sure) while legs calls out for people. avid's first observation is that legs looks like he's having a bad day
yes I transcribed the one-on-one talk. I'm not putting the whole thing here, just notable parts. moving on.
avid's right, considering legs has been having a ptsd flashback for most of the day and is currently recovering from blood loss. avid talks about shelby not wanting to come home, to which doc points out that avid's been calling vampires monsters and who would want to come home to that? avid says that shelby is different, then asks for a flint and steel (legs does check his inventory for one). when legs admonishes him for wanting to burn another house down, avid says that "it's over." avid's hopelessness creeps in, and this seems to reel doc in from criticizing avid further, as the next thing he says is like? actually an attempt to listen to avid?
which avid almost entirely cuts from his pov. when avid explains that he has experience trying to cure monsters, legs says that the vamps aren't monsters, they're pyro and shelby. then there's this bit
sorry avid's "oh wow 😒" is just really funny delivery. also legs part of the truffle brigade win. legs speaks over avid for the next part until THE MOMENT
I truly believe with all my heart that THIS is the moment everything changed between legs and avid. they took my life away from me. what do you mean.
for avid, this is him offering trust. for legs, this is him offering an ear. both to someone they've never seen eye to eye with.
this is a vulnerable moment. for the third time in the session, avid opens up about what really led him to oakhurst. about elle. the two other people he told were drift (his roommate, his closest ally) and shelby (someone he desperately wants the companionship of), and the third is legs. one of the biggest voices against him, who's pushed him around (depending on how you interpret the minecraft body language of legs hitting avid all the time), and even after vampires were undeniable has always been arguing with avid's approach. someone who avid has doubted the legitimacy of frequently to his face (where's your medical license). this is a moment of trust. avid is trusting legs with the murder of elle. where just minutes before legs had to give owen his trust, now avid is putting the ball in legs's court.
so before this, legs does not apologize to avid for his very vocal dismissal of avid after vampires are revealed to be real, instead he keeps his ego unbruised by switching to arguing with avid's methods rather than his sanity, still considering him a danger to the town, just in a more palatable (and a little more fair) way. but in this moment legs listens. legs doesn't interrupt avid, doesn't counter him, doesn't call him a lunatic or criticize him for fearmongering. he listens. and he reassures avid that they can save people. because this is the first time legs is really seeing avid. not writing him off as someone who will lead this town into ruin, but as a familiar hopeless person who needs to be shown the light.
and things aren't perfect between them just after this. after all, legs still punches avid after avid burns shelby's house down. but when he talks to avid then, he says "I don't need you grieving right now." because now he understands more where avid is coming at this situation from. and in the next session, avid tells legs about his wound. legs is the first person avid tells about the wound. and legs apologizes to avid. and avid says he's sorry too
