What in the new age huckster nonsense... (Trae on TikTok)
Guess who got their first community guidelines violation on TikTok?
And my appeal failed. So it's permanently down on TikTok. Ugh.
So I've shot a new video on this, where I hid her username and URL and didn't outright laugh at her or comment on her hair (which to be fair she has gotten rid of the locs since I made the first video).
Hopefully the new video won't get pulled for "bullying."
I'd repost it here, but I talked so fast that the subtitles were almost completely unreadable. Like almost every single one is completely useless. Looking back at this older video, I can tell this is a recent problem too -- since this old video didn't have subtitle problems.
So yeah, watch the new one in the TikTok app if you can (if it gets pulled I'll repost my saved copy here too).
Rachel Sussman, The Oldest Living Things in the World, 2004-present.
Since 2004 artist Rachel Sussman has been researching, working with biologists, and traveling all over the world to photograph continuously living organisms 2,000 years old and older. The work spans disciplines, continents, and millennia: it’s part art and part science, has an innate environmentalism, and is driven by existential inquiry. She begins at ‘year zero,’ and looks back from there, photographing the past in the present. Together, her portraits capture the living history of our planet – and what we stand to lose in the future.
Everything is like “QUEER history” and “List of QUEER young adult books” or “Top 10 QUEER movies” and queer this and queer that and for the love of god please just say LGBT.
And faster to pronounce if you are talking instead of writing.
It’s not more inclusive, and if your excuse of using a slur as a blanket term is “it’s faster to say”, GENUINELY what is wrong with you
It’s called economía del lenguaje.
It’s also the respected academic term?? The acronym isn’t static and it’s usage is varied by things like generational difference, location, and knowledge of the community. Even just in the U.S. in the last few decades the common usage gone from GLBT to LGBT to LGBTQ, to LGBTQA/LGBTQIA/LGBTQIAP/etc (Which, let me tell you as someone who has given presentations in the past using these updated acronyms, are all real mouthfulls), to LGBT+.
Also yes, queer is more inclusive! Especially coming at it from an academic standpoint, people didn’t always use or identify with the terms we use now and you can’t always try to cram them into our modern perceptions of sexuality. We can argue for years about whether a famous historical figure was gay or bisexual or straight and trans or whatever, but if we can all agree that they were somehow queer then using that term allows us to move past the debate and into productive discussion. And not everybody everywhere shares the same terms for sexual and gender identity, or even the same concepts of those things, so queer really is a more inclusive term in a lot of cases.
Like yeah if you’re talking specifically about gay or trans people you can just say gay or transgender, but if you’re talking about more than one identity or someone who doesn’t conform to our perceptions of ‘LGBT,’ or a person or people whose identity you don’t know, queer is just the better word.
“That’s SO gay”, “Oh my god, you’re not a LESBIAN, are you?”
Your words are slurs, too. Why do you get your words, but I don’t get mine? What makes you so special?
I’m here, I’m queer, go fuck yourself.
queer is not a slur, stop drinking the TERF koolaid
every time one of you fools spout about ‘queer is a slur’ a terf laughs because their fucking plan to make that word ‘taboo’ is fucking working you dipshit.
I did not get my degree in queer literature for you all to keep pulling this bullshit.
baby gays,,,, i beg of you to learn your queer history and stop listening to terf bullshit
every single one of our labels has been used as a slur against us.
terfs and -phobes are always going to try and hurt us with what we identify as. but the fact remains these are OUR labels and always have been.
we’re here, we’re queer, get used to it.
I don’t know if this is just because I’m not American but I’ve never heard queer used as a slur. Ever. Meanwhile gay was the insult in the 2000s here. Everything you didn’t like was ‘soo gay’. Queer wasn’t even a word most of us knew back then.
It just baffled me that people would think an identifier is automatically a slur just because someone uses it to mock someone. If we did that gay would be a slur. Stupid would be a slur. Autistic would be a slur.
The reason people are upset about the word queer is that it’s a unifying term. You can say you’re queer and all people will know is that you’re part of the community. But you can’t say you’re LGBT, you have to say you’re gay or trans or ace. They don’t want you to be ambiguously queer. They want you to say which kind of queer you are so they can decide whether you’re undesirable.
yeah in the 90s and early 2000s kids would call each other “gay” as an insult. But no one ties themselves in knots over whether “gay” is a slur. So yeah, please ffs learn your history.
They want you to say which kind of queer you are so they can decide whether you’re undesirable.
Growing up my parents taught me that if you’re too sick to [insert responsibility here] then you’re too sick to [insert something that makes you happy here].
It took me a really long time to unlearn this. When I would get sick or have a “bad day” I would deprive myself of anything that made me happy. Watching movies, eating something I enjoyed, going for a walk, playing video games or just browsing online looking at funny cat videos. I wouldn’t let myself do these things because I was always told that if I’m too sick to go to work, or do homework, or go to school then I must be too sick to play Mortal Kombat or watch Unsolved Mysteries lol.
Whenever I wouldn’t feel good, which I later learned as an adult was due to sleep deprivation caused by my ADHD and depression (and of course the depression itself would cause me to feel like shit), my parents would tell me “if you’re not throwing up, then you’re not sick.” And when I would stay home from school (or even work in my later teen years) my parents would make sure that I didn’t have any “fun.” No TV, no movies, no games, no going outside, no arts and crafts, no books, no nothing. Just lay in bed and feel miserable.
I’m happy to say that I no longer do this to myself. Now when I’m having a bad day or I’m sick (cold, flu or whatever) I allow myself to do the things (within reason lol) that I actually love doing. If I’m not too sick to step outside for a few minutes then I’ll go for a walk. I’ll watch my favorite movies and if it’s a bad day or a cold (something that doesn’t hinder my appetite too much) I’ll eat my favorite foods. I don’t guilt trip myself anymore for having a “sick day.”
Just because you’re sick (whether physically, emotionally or mentally) doesn’t mean that you can’t do things you enjoy. You’re not any less sick because you watch TV. You’re not any less sick because you’re playing video games.
Actually you SHOULD be doing these things when you’re not feeling good because they make you feel better. The better you feel, the faster your heal.
Thank you! I needed to read this.
oh. oH. OH. I needed this omfg
Staying home from work when you feel sick means you are;
Not spreading disease to your coworkers
Trying to relax so your body can fight the disease faster without extra stress holding you back.
Too tired to concentrate for 8 hours straight
Too tired to do laborous physical activity for 8 hours straight
Not risking aggravating your symptoms and passing out or vomiting on the job
Staying home from work does not stop you from;
Doing relaxing things, like reading a book, browsing the internet, or watching a movie. These things take little mental effort, and are not comparable to working.
Doing some chores, or mildly laborious hobbies like knitting, writing, painting, or playing video games. Just because you are shedding germs that could make others sick doesn’t necessarily imply you are incapable of physical activity. Even people who are recovering from a surgery that removed an entire organ can knit and play video games while they heal. Part of their GUTS are missing and they are ENCOURAGED to do hobby stuff.
Going outside for a walk. Fresh air and the sight of trees and animals is actually proven to help you heal faster. It’s a verified form of physical and mental therapy. I encourage you to do it.
Feeling happy, feeling relaxed, feeling positive and stress-free; those things help you recover faster.
Take note of the COVID virus. Some people feel perfectly fine while infected. They might feel like they have a tiny cough, or a little tired, but they certainly are not bedridden.
However, it would SAVE LIVES if that infected person would STAY HOME and not go in to work or school.
To prevent the spread of disease to your classmates and coworkers is an ETHICALLY and MORALLY GOOD reason to stay home. You are a part of society. Extend that kindness to the folks around you.

Hey Bree! Haven't been keeping up with you so I hope you're doing well ^^ My coworker at work (who is wiccan) has been criticizing me recently on being a witch. Stuff like you can't call yourself a witch because you're a boy, you have to be a warlock, why do you use the wiccan calendar and holidays if you're not wiccan (in response to my mentioning Mabon coming up), I can't be a pagan witch and not wiccan, and I *have* to chose a pantheon, etc etc. And while I'm not really mad, it's kinda got me thinking that I actually don't know much about the wiccan religion itself! (I kinda have an aversion because an ex tried to force me into it and I didn't like the seemingly strict "harm none." I think I was too hex positive tbh) anyways! Sorry for the mini rant! Can I have a history/religion lesson please?
-sound of Bree gnawing through a table leg before answering-
Witchling, I want you to listen to me and I want you to internalize what I'm about to tell you, okay?
Witchcraft is for everyone. And witch is a gender-neutral term.
The whole "male witches must be warlocks" thing is a misnomer. And unfortunately, a lot of older witches still believe it and parts of modern pop culture still perpetuate it. And there are certain sects, such as Dianic Wiccans, that believe people who identify as anything other than AFAB can't be witches at all.
I don't usually like to wholesale naysay other people's beliefs, but these people are full of shit and so is your coworker. There is more than one way to be a witch and nobody gets to tell you you're not "doing it right" simply because your way is not the same as their way.
If you identify as male and you want to call yourself a witch, you go right the fuck ahead. If you want to be a pagan witch and not choose a particular path or pantheon, you go right the fuck ahead. If you want to keep your witchcraft and your religious practices separate, you go right the fuck ahead. All of these things are entirely up to you.
And while the Wheel of the Year cycle IS a Wiccan creation, most of the holidays it includes were borrowed from other traditions and the concept of celebrating the harvest cycle is hardly original to any one path, let along Wicca.
If you want to celebrate those holidays, there is nothing stopping you. Granted, Ostara and Mabon as we know them were created by Aidan Kelly in the 1970s, so if you'd rather just celebrate Harvest Home or the autumn equinox or the fall harvest, you can do that too. There's a ton of overlap that's open to everyone, regardless of their spiritual preferences. (You may want to check out Ep. 12 of Hex Positive, "Secular Celebrations," for some ideas and suggestions.)
Also, if Wiccans hadn't spent literal decades trying to convince the entire witchcraft community that Wicca was the only legitimate path for modern witches and insisting that their ways and traditions were supposed to be universal, maybe there wouldn't be so much confusion. But that's just my opinion. 🙄
Since I'm not Wiccan, I don't think I can give you a proper overview of the whole story there, but I can tell you that it's been around since the 1950s and is still very much in the process of evolving with the times. I highly recommend checking out @traegorn's discussion of the history of Wicca in Ep. 3 of BS-Free Witchcraft, appropriately entitled "The History of Wicca," and talk to them about any Wicca-related questions you may have.
Stay strong, poppet. The only one who can decide whether or not you're a witch is YOU. Don't let the haters bring you down! And if anybody gives you shit for not conforming to their way of doing the thing, you tell 'em come talk to me. If I can't set 'em straight, I'll certainly chew their ear off in the process.
WHERE THE FUCK DOES SOMEONE CLAIMING TO BE A WICCAN GET OFF SAYING MEN CAN'T BE "WITCHES." DOES THIS PERSON NOT KNOW SHIT ABOUT THE FOUNDING OF THEIR OWN FAITH
TELL EM, SENPAI!
Historical side note: The reason that the rest of us got lumped in with the Wiccans is directly because of the Satanic Panic bullshit in the 80s and 90s. Super short version, we were trying to get witchcraft and paganism recognized as a legitimate religion so that things like pagan chaplains could administer to pagan soldiers, pagan symbols could be put on military gravestones, people stopped being fired from jobs and having their kids taken away and put into foster homes for being pagan, etc. That’s also why there is so much fluffy bunny shit mixed in, because again, trying to chill the Satanic Panic assholes down. If they assumed we were all peace, love, and flowers, they were less likely to arrest us on bogus charges of animal mutilation or sex trafficking. It worked, more or less, but in the process it also caused the mess where everyone thinks that all witches and most pagans are Wiccans, because they were the umbrella that the rest of us had to stand under.
I mean, that and authors like Ravenwolf, Buckland, and Cunningham who were literally saying, "Yeah, this is the only right way to be a witch. Anything else you do isn't gonna work." and constantly using "witch" and "Wiccan" as if they were interchangeable.
Some of that grew out of the Satanic Panic mindset, I know (see: West Memphis Three), but still. It's a mindset of public assumption, but it's one that a good portion of the witchcraft community actively encouraged and worked to cultivate, and in some cases attempted to impose upon other practitioners.
(And there was definitely also a good amount of Wiccans going, "We're not like those OTHER witches," during the whole push for good PR.)

wait wait can you want a dick but not in a guy way but like just to have one???
you can do whatever you want forever
One of the biggest influences on the way I currently see gender and sex and transgender identity was one tiny sentence
When I was talking to my top surgeon, he mentioned that he'd done top surgery on a butch lesbian. She identified fully as a woman, she just wanted a flat chest.
And that... blew my mind. My own desire for a dick and a flat chest is in a guy way, but the freedom of knowing that it doesn't HAVE to be a guy way, that you can just want a body and have it -
That not only is gender presentation in clothes and so forth mix and match, you can treat your body that way too, not only does your gender not have to 'match' your assigned body your chosen gender doesn't have to 'match' your chosen body because all that really matters, on any of it, is what feels right to you -
I was full up on "you can be trans without wanting to change x part of your body" but learning that that could also apply the other way around was what blew my mind and shifted my whole understanding of identity.
adventure time said “nothing began how you think it did. nothing will end how you think it will. change is inevitable and you have nothing to fear. wizards are dope.”
