I'm so obsessed with what this comic had to tell us about the neck on Jason's Red Hood suit. Really opened my eyes to the potentials I'd missed before. He can open it up discowing style...

Jason was always going to leave.

That’s something I fully believe.

The breakdown of his relationship with Bruce started at the very beginning of that relationship. It was always built to fail.

Even if the Joker never happened, I feel like so many people skip the fact that Jason ran away. He ran away for a reason. Bruce drove him away. If he hadn’t run away then he would’ve later. He and Bruce are such different people and have such different fundamental morals that they were always going to clash in the end.

His whole tenure as Robin shows he was never content with how they were handling things. He’s always believed some people are past redemption. That has always been his character, well before Red Hood was even a thought.

He was always going to leave, even if the story changed.

Lying Retcons about what Jason was like as Robin:

Jason HATED criminals and has NO empathy for them and beats the shit out of all of them and doesn’t think they’re human. He doesn’t believe they can change, even simple thieves, despite the fact he’s a former thief so this makes no sense. Batman will have to point that hypocrisy out to him because Jason’s stupid I guess.

(I actually don't know if any other batkid has ever expressed that they feel sorry for one of their parents killers? Bruce does it in some versions of the 'meets Joe Chill again' stories, so Jason might be the only batkid who has that specific thing in common with him)

(It's kind of interesting to consider the early scarecrow one was from when he was 12 (Bruce's imagined gravestone for him in this story actually confirms his exact age in it! yes there's an imagined gravestone) whereas I'd put him at 15 here, which (completely accidentally) gives the impression his thinking grew to be a little more like Bruce's over the years, since his "but they're dangerous/we can't let them do this" echoes Bruce's response to him back then.)

But yeah there's such a significant pattern of him being a sympathetic and compassionate kid who DOES try to understand when you actually read the comics, it's almost laughable.

Like in the man who has everything Superman, Wonder Women and Batman(his dad) where just defeated. Like that’s a child. He’s allowed to freak. Also he notably saves the fucking day in this story.

And the other one… I genuinely can’t express how much it pissed me off. Take Jason’s name out of your goddamn mouth!

I... okay, so I just started reading Countdown. I read two issues in the standard order before realizing the series is meant to be read backwards. I find it pretty interesting, but after switching to the correct reading order, I’ve already got a lot of questions after just a little bit of reading.

Basically, Duela Dent gets killed. After the Titans attend the funeral, they start investigating and discover that Red Hood is involved.

And then, after that:

Alright, here’s the wiki summary. The power of words is truly something, just reading these lines makes me feel like I’m about to explode.

Let me break it down for you all:

“Jason knew very little about the murder, only that she was killed by an alien,”

Excuse me? I’d argue Jason knew more about the murder than anyone else standing there, considering he was basically right there when it happened. You’d think a description of the guy’s appearance would be valuable. The type of gun he used? His outfit? What about what he told Jason regarding Duela being an anomaly that could harm the multiverse? Or the fact that he intended to kill Jason right after for that very same reason? And then there’s the part where an identical-looking guy showed up and stopped him? I feel like that information could have been incredibly useful.

Meanwhile, the Titans just decided went to the scene of Duela’s murder and found absolutely nothing. I mean, Jason was right there. I don’t know, doesn't it seem like if they had just asked him nicely and thoroughly, they could have gotten a ton of information?

Also:

I actually think Jason has a point. I mean, all they did was go up to Jason and said they knew that he had his "dirty fingers" in this, and "Were you lying? Did you kill Duela Dent?"

I think the comic tried to portray Jason as uncooperative, given how he fought back and made sarcastic remarks, but even while being accused, he told the truth, and the information came out surprisingly easily. He stated he didn't kill her, that he tried to save her and that her killer was an "alien," and a powerful, smart one. I honestly think if they had just asked politely, they would have learned a lot more.

Secondly…

"Donna has to restrain Nightwing from attacking the brash Jason Todd," "Robin however, feels no such reservation, and kicks Todd in the crotch."

In the comic, the moment they met Jason, they accused him of killing Duela; then Dick and Tim grabbed him, pinning him from both sides. Even in a situation like that, he still managed to punch Tim and kick Dick in the crotch? He only stopped because Ravager intervened. Yet the scene is portrayed as if, had Donna not held Dick back, he would have beaten Jason up?

"Brash Jason”? He voluntarily shared information with them and stopped the moment Ravager stepped in, whereas Dick was the one still struggling while Donna restrained him, ready to pick a fight. And what about Tim? He "feels no such reservations and kicks Jason?" That's when they've already stop the fight and Jason was standing there harmless. He basically proved Jason's point of them just want to pick a fight with Jason rather than really doing the investigation :) He was being incredibly petty and ridiculous. Did they really just go to see Jason to accuse him and beat him up?

If you ask me, then I'll- *quickly deleting everything I was about to say and starting to type furiously* hey, did you see that? There was this guy who approached Jason and very politely asked if he could tell him what happened regarding the Joker's daughter, and Jason said, "Sure, why not?" I just want to cry. Then he told him the whole story from start to finish. Then told him whom to go to and ask. What were the Titans doing, seriously.

Jason... *sighs loudly.*

Fascinating how defensive Tim and Dick fans will get when people will note how Batman TAS and Dynamic Duo gave Tim and Dick Jason's backstory (guess what Timm and Dini thought that Jason's backstory was just more compelling than lpod) while erasing Jason or his heroism "oh Jason isn't the only character allowed to be a street kid !!!!!" but pre crisis Jason growing up in a circus was too much ?

every time i think about jason todd i want to cry. he was just a little kid who did not want to be a criminal. he wanted so much to be good. and look at what happened to him. and it’s not even written like a tragedy, it just happened because writers just didn’t and still don’t care about him. that’s so fucking unfair. jason todd deserves so much more both diegetically and non-diegetically.

pre crisis jason being from the circus is not stealing dicks backstory but it is COPYING. the todds only even know dick because dick was in the circus and they affirm that the graysons were the best and they respected them a lot. nothing about dicks character or story was altered in any way to make room for jason

the dynamic duo movie is STEALING jasons robin origin story to apply it to dick. jasons specific story of refusing to be party to organized crime is being taken from him and changed so that dick can have it. not the same!!!

One thing that's bothering me a bit is how Jason is expected to swallow down his emotions regarding Two Face. I'm not good with words, but there's just something about how the killer of Bruce's parents got put away, the killer of Dick's parents got put away, but Jason still has to face his dad's killer every other week.

I started thinking about it because of these two panels. Bruce is (rightfully) chastizing Jason about not letting his anger control him, when Jason points out the hypocrisy of that. It's a fair point, considering Bruce just tried to kill the Joker a few issues ago due to a lost temper. This conversation seemed like a good opportunity to discuss their similarities, how Bruce deals with it, morality in general and etc.

But instead, Bruce just... deflects.

Later, they briefly talk about it in the cave. But it's framed more as Jason letting his pesky emotions about Two Face interrupt their crimefighting, rather than the complex grief that it is.

Not to mention that other than the confrontation when Jason discovered Bruce keeping his dad's death a secret, they really haven't talked about how Jason feels over his parents. We see it, like when Jason is crying in bed all day, but there's no real conversation, at least not that I've gotten to yet.

Maybe the writers just didn't care to mention it, since there weren't any thoughts or flashbacks about his parents when he got fear-gassed, nor the two times he nearly blew up, when B lost custody of him, when he got beat up by that mob--nothing. It just makes me sad.

Sucks I have a deep seated fear for freethinking robots and ai bc by god are they some of the best ace and nonbinary representation in popular media.
