taz phantom of the opera au aka “taako becomes an opera ghost, gets paid 8000 a month to stop”

i watched phantom of the opera last night so 

taako is working as a stagehand for a little extra cash, magnus works at the fancy theater so he hooks taako up with a gig. taako goes exploring one day and discovers that oh, the theater was built on top of an extremely vibing underground lake wizard lair? some wizard just left his shit here? 

taako: its free real estate

of course taako is going to take over this dope spooky wizard lair! taako is a wizard, this works out perfectly. it comes with a boat? and bunch of hidden entrances and exits? taako is loving this

taako tells lup about this and she says “neat” and then taako shows her the cool underground lake and all the hidden tunnels and stuff and tbh they make a litttttttle too much noise so when taako comes in for work the next day? everyone is talking about the “return of the theater ghost”

taako does some poking around, asks magnus about this, learns about “yeah there was just a creepy ghost who wore a mask who kidnapped people and killed them and it was a whole thing and he also like, blackmailed the owners of the theater and it was a WHOLE thing but hes gone now….probably” 

taako: …….I could make a career out of this. 

taako is now the new opera ghost. taako sends letters demanding to be paid to stop doing a spook. the opera owners comply because actually? the return of the theater ghost is doing great things for publicity. taako is running around being spooky and wearing a mask and also leaving scary notes and rattling things and he’s having a GREAT time. hes getting paid to be weird? taako was being weird for free but this is better! 

enter kravitz. 

kravitz is a singer and he has a really really lovely voice and sometimes taako sits behind the mirror and listens to him in the dressing room and also watches because taako thinks boy is….hot. 

taako could just ask him out as a normal person but taako does not do that. taako starts offering commentary from behind the mirror. good going, taako. taako is now kravitz’s resident ghost voice coach. 

kravitz is confused but rolling with this.

enter a series of escalating shenanigans where kravitz is flirting with the opera ghost and wonders where his life went wrong. meanwhile, lup is yelling at taako to just ask??? hot boy out??? whats wrong with you, why are you just haunting hotboy??? taako is just living like this. he’s in too deep now. 

taako wonders if he can…use theater ghost’s notoriety to get kravitz some singing solos? that would be nice for taako, and also for kravitz. he likes watching hotboy. 

enter a series of escalating shenanigans that is very similar to the plot of phantom in which taako tries to blackmail the theater into giving kravitz parts, and meanwhile, kravitz yells at taako to taako? stop? but also gets parts because he is good. 

taako tries to apologize by showing kravitz the spooky wizard lair. taako tries to act spooky the whole time but gives up halfway through. kravitz was not fooled from the beginning, but is a little relieved to realize oh, its just a dumb boy. oh, its just a dumb boy who….i could love. kravitz suggests not being an opera ghost. taako says but he loves this? he’s getting paid 8000 a month to stop. kravitz says :/ 

eventually this fic culminates in a scene where taako accidentally drops a chandelier (he just meant to rattle it!) and then kravitz goes into the spooky wizard lair to yell at taako and taako apologizes! taako says :< sorry about theater ghost. kravitz forgives him 

taako asks whether hypothetically, kravitz likes normal boys, or if its just ghosts that do it for him, hypothetically. kravitz says he could bring himself to love a normal boy, if he must. Taako says cool no reason. taako takes kravitz back in the spooky ghost gondola 

the theater is quiet for a few days. Kravitz wonders where taako went. 

then on the third day, the curtain has been replaced with black velvet with sparkly purple script that says GOODBYE and ABRACAFUCKYOU! underneath 

after the perfomance that night, kravitz gets accosted by a handsome elf holding flowers. “hi” taako says. “big fan of ur work.”

lup went missing six months ago. she left for work one night and just… never came back. taako spends his days looking for her and his nights working the bar at the davy lamp; it’s here that he first meets kravitz.

refuge is a small town. pretty much everyone who frequents the davy lamp is a regular, so taako knows all their names and faces. kravitz, though… kravitz is new. kravitz looks like he stepped out of a period piece. the dude’s got a pocket watch. who has a pocketwatch??? taako thinks. 

anyways, the new guy has come in every night this week—he orders a glass of red wine that he never seems to drink, sits at a table in the back or alone at the bar, and he doesn’t talk to anyone who doesn’t talk to him first. 

he’s not doing anything wrong, per say, but it’s still pretty suspicious! so naturally, taako gets curious. and even though taako’s keeping a close eye on him, the guy somehow still manages to slip out unnoticed.

of course, when taako goes to leave for the night, who does he find waiting for him in the alley but… kravitz. ;o)

aw'right, kravitz says, we’re alone now. i think we can both drop the act. by decree ov’ the vampire queen, you, my friend, are undeeeer arrest.

kravitz goes on to demand that taako return to the eternal stockade with him, where he will be tried for breaking the one and only rule of “their” kind.

this doesn’t have to end violently, he says. come in easy and our queen will show you mercy. if you try to run… at this, kravitz grins. if you run, i’ll catch you. so what’ll it be?

there’s a pause, and then taako starts laughing.

Taako wrote five letters:

For barry, the first boy taako ever met. He and lup really are giant nerds who love and deserve each other, but he’ll always have a special place in taakos heart. Taako would never admit that out loud.

For kravitz, taakos first kiss. And second. Once during a game of spin the bottle, and once after the party, a quick kiss goodbye when kravitz’s mother arrived. He left for a fancy music boarding school and taako didn’t think he’d ever see him again.

this got super convoluted and structure-heavy, i’m gonna break this into two parts: what the tres spooky squad got up to, and how the reaper boys got in their sticky death situations

for simplicity’s sake, i’m gonna make it so 1) no one is a lich and 2) kravitz is a Bonus Crew Member. or, more like taako is a bonus crew member. have you read star-crossed is one way of putting it? different plot and stuff, but those circumstances – only one twin gets accepted so the other stows away on the ship.

kravitz was supposed to be living his life as a celebrated musician in a fairly nice city. what lucretia failed to account for was the thriving gambling scene in said city. kravitz ends up fleeing with a significant debt and many folks eager to collect.

lup has a similar sizzle it up story to taako, except somebody spills gasoline around her work station and she ends up burning down glamor springs. 

barry was a professor at a university until he had an existential crisis / stress meltdown and snapped and before he knew it he was halfway across the country trying to find work as a mercenary. lucretia. sort of forgot how wild barry was before the ipre.

barry is the tank and lup is a font of magical damage, so kravitz is like. everything else. which is good, bc y’all?? bard/rogues (which i picked up from here) are just proficient in everything and have expertise in half of it.

highlights of their adventure:

since kravitz is multiclassing, vicious mockery isn’t worth an action in battle for a while. instead, it’s used as a punchline. like if he makes fun of somebody outside of battle they just take 1d4 damage.

in the test of initiation, kravitz gets hit so hard by an ogre he almost dies.

lup tries to take angus back to the moonbase with them, and you know what? maybe they do. maybe angus joins the bureau early. hopefully he’s far away from kravitz’s bag during the cannonball ride or else he’ll realize that he and lup looted the safe.

yeah, uh, kravitz and lup are 100% the sticky-fingered adventurers here. they try to shoplift from fantasy costco and. hoo boy. garfield sure knows some interesting curses.

barry eats the philosopher’s stone.

lup 100% sponsors girls nights on the base. the director is dragged along whenever possible. the scheduling is a constant struggle between lucretia trying not to be on-base those days and lup trying to catch her by surprise.

kravitz and carey and rogue friends.

barry can’t quite remember that he’s a necromancer, but keeps saving bones and stuff from their battles. like dude. come on. we have to live with you.

he occasionally picks up wizard levels, specifically in necromancy and. kravitz hates it. but barry says it just Feels Right.

arms outstretched where barry gets propelled out of his body (bc irony), lup goes to save him, and kravitz has a class feature that lets him learn a cleric spell so he uses planar ally to save them. who’s in the tar? taako!! woahhh!!

Across the board, Maximum Fun podcasts do not provide transcripts with their shows. Without transcripts, whole populations (including deaf and hard-of-hearing folks, neurodivergent people, people with auditory processing disorders and more) cannot access audio mediums like podcasts. Jesse Thorn, owner of Max Fun, has said that part of the reason for this is a lack of demand, and that he thinks deaf and hard-of-hearing people won’t find the humor in many of the podcasts by reading them. Not only is this incorrect, it puts the responsibility of accessibility onto disabled people. It also ignores the fact that for many, reading is the only way to access certain media like podcasts. It is imperative that content creators build accessibility into their products from the start. Otherwise, they are sending the message that their work is for able-bodied people only. Jesse Thorn stated that he was willing to revisit his decision not to provide transcripts in the future. So it’s very important that Max Fun fans let him know: we care about accessibility! We want to be able to share the shows we love with disabled friends and family. We want transcripts! Sign to show the folks at Max Fun that a truly accessible, inclusive network is something we care about!

Here’s an interesting point of characterization I’ve seen in TAZ: Taako’s passivity, and how it defines him and his arc.

Now, Taako isn’t lazy. He’s described as “never satisfied” by the judges in cycle 65, he goes out of his way to learn new things - he taught himself magic when he’d forgotten he knew it, he invented surfing, he learned an entire language from scratch on the animal plane. However, he can come off as lazy because of one catchphrase: “Taako’s good out here.”

I would say that isn’t laziness. That’s passivity. Taako does not want to initiate anything. He doesn’t want to start a fight, he doesn’t want to get into trouble, he wants to keep himself safe. That’s perfectly in character for him. It’s set in contrast to “Magnus rushes in.” It makes sense - he stays where he is, he doesn’t move.

Which is what makes his moments of action that much more powerful. Think about Arms Outstretched - instead of remaining passive, Taako takes action, flinging his soul out of his body towards Magnus. Even running across the sapphire mirror to Kravitz is a moment of action that’s special - he cares about these people, so he actively goes to them.

But his most powerful moments are those that the combine action and passivity, and I want to talk about two of them, both in the finale.

The first is when he’s explaining his idea that will save everyone and everything, and he says -

Taako: Listen, all that thing wants on Earth, the thing it wants more than anything else, we have been basically trolling it for a hundred years. The only thing it wants, is to pick us up and absorb us into itself. And I don’t know about you all, but Taako’s good out here. (via @tazscripts)

There it is - his trademark catchphrase of passivity, but here, it isn’t about a lack of action, it’s about staying steadfast and standing strong. What has been a signifier of Taako’s caution and wish to keep himself safe have expanded to a stance of protection - a radical idea, a deconstruction of a world of tar or a world of ash  into there’s a third option.  They don’t have to choose between running or hiding. Taako’s option - the option, ironically, of rushing into the Hunger - is staying and standing and fighting. Instead of staying back and not engaging, Taako’s unmoving posture here is standing firm and saying no, you move.

Which brings me to the second moment, from the last episode.

Griffin: Holy shit. Alright, here’s the scene. Merle and Magnus, you see Taako step up and say bye, and stick out the KrEbStAr in front of him, and from his glaive, a column of green wind launches outward and connects with John. And you see John screaming and you—it almost looks like he is being peeled out of that portal as this wind is just kind of tearing him apart. But you also see Taako and it looks like the power and fury of this attack is knocking him off of his feet.

Travis: I put my hand on Taako’s shoulder to help brace him.

Clint: I throw myself down to wrap my arms around his legs to hold him to the ground.

Justin: I reach into my fuckin’ bag and grab my Immovable Rod. I’m not going fuckin’ anywhere. (via @tazscripts)

Significant in this scene, first of all, is the fact that Arms Outstretched plays over it. As I said previously, Arms Outstretched is a scene of Taako’s action, a scene where he puts himself in danger, throws himself into the fray, so to speak, to rescue Magnus.

This moment is a pinnacle of the combination of that action with Taako’s now-established standing firm.  He’s at the front, casting a spell that is destroying the avatar of something they’ve all been fighting for over a century, and he starts to be blown away, but his friends grab on and hold him fast. He holds himself  fast.

Taako isn’t running away. He isn’t staying at the back. He’s right there in front, but his power isn’t in rushing in, but standing firm. Taako is Lup’s anchor, and there’s a good reason for that. He knows who he is, and he, in this moment, is fully himself. In this moment, he is the most Taako  he could be. He is multidimensional, a fully realized creation, and he isn’t going fuckin’ anywhere.

taz pirate au mayhaps???

YES.

1) Davenport is the unofficial admiral of a number of pirate vessels who have loosely banded together under the auspices of keeping each other from getting caught by the queen’s navy.  He’s not sure how this happened.  He’s barely even a pirate he just loves sailing and is VERY crafty.

2) Magnus is first mate on the Raven’s Roost.  Originally got its name a few captains back when a number of the queen’s agents who tried to board were hung from the mast.  (The queen’s agents are colloquially called the queen’s ravens).  These days, though, the captain is a former blacksmith named Julia who doesn’t stand for that shit.  They raid slaving ships and crooked merchants, mostly, and the Roost is largely beloved by people who aren’t working for the crown (or rich assholes).

3) Taako and Lup ship-hopped for a long time, until Lup fell in love with an arcanist in one of the hidden pirate ports and settled down.  (not that you ever settle down in one of those places, precisely, it’s still a pretty raucous time).  He’s since managed to lead a successful mutiny and has his own ship, first mate Ren.  He’s been playing cat and mouse with one of the Queen’s Ravens for years, flirting hard every time, and it’s been getting more and more… well, it’s a romance novel waiting to happen, with Ser Kravitz.  Ren is EXHAUSTED by their ridiculousness.  Taako has yet to settle on a name for his ship.

4) Lucretia is captain of the New Moon.  They’re a largely (but not entirely) female crew, first mate Killian, also has Carey, Noelle, a number of BoB members.  She has a rather serious flirtation going on with Captain Julia and her first mate, but they’ve not properly followed through yet, to Carey’s dismay.  

5) Merle’s just this old dude that tries to sell them pot and provides all sorts of herbal medicinals and also magical healing.  Sometimes he travels on their ships.  Sometimes he doesn’t.  They’re not really sure how they picked him up, but he sure is here!

Android Taako and Lup AU?

none of the scientists can tell if they have made crazy errors in code or if taako and lup are just complete weirdos. it turns out not to matter either way because there’s no way they’re staying in that boring ass lab! they’re gonna break out and see the world

the scientists: look at these androgynous, vaguely male robots we made! lup: mmm nope i’m a woman

barry and lup secretly stay in touch after he helps them escape even though barry could get in serious trouble because a Lot of money was funneled into that project. barry’s never been a rule breaker but he can’t bring himself to care because losing lup would suck beyond measure

merle is a scientist on a different floor and he ends up letting them stay at the house he’s renting to magnus. one time he finds them charging up and is very confused but when they admit to being androids he’s totally cool with it. he points at his prosthetic arm and says, “hey, i’m an android too!” neither of them can convince him otherwise

kravitz is the person who is sent to round them up and prior to meeting them he staunchly believes that life can only be biological. taako ends up talking him out of turning him in and talking him into hanging out more and by their third date kravitz sits him down and formally apologizes for if he ever made taako feel like a second class citizen

I was listening to my mother finish the stolen century, and it occurred to me: exactly what was Lucretia’s backup plan if THB didn’t recover the bell in time? If they had died in Wonderland or just taken too long, the Hunger would have come first. Would she have left on the ship? She wouldn’t have had a whole lot of choice.

But if she had…  The voidfish’s information-blocking ability works between planar systems. Only Lucretia and Lich!Barry could remember the song from Legato, even though they’d left that world behind and the voidfish that deleted the information was gone or absorbed. So when everyone respawned in cycle 100, you would have Lucretia, Davenport still mostly nonverbal, Barry back to thinking he’s a low level fighter, Lup… not remembering her own existence? (Would the others even be able to look at her without getting sick and dizzy like when they were on the base without being inoculated?), and THB - with fresh memories of dying - staring at their boss while dressed in the red robes she’d warned them about for over a year.

I guess it fits into her whole ‘tunnel vision’ situation but holy shit Luce how were you gonna explain that one
